What do you think about small canvases?

Or why do you use it basically... or where do you use it 😅

Because i still didn't understand the background of it like... like how affecting the art

Btw i am talking about digital art. Artworks that are lower than 2000x2000

basically on a small canvas you have less pixels in the image. this means when you zoom in or use transform tools (rotating or scaling parts to be smaller or larger) those individual pixels stretch more and look less smooth.

it also means if you try to print your drawing on paper, it will be really small and blurry. hope this helps !

Pretty much what Onessu above me said- Its generally about quality of the art.

Of course, there are benefits to a small canvas, such as:

-If your pc struggles working on big canvases, then a small canvas will help.
-If you're intentionally looking for a pixel-ms-painty style, then a small canvas can achieve that way better than a big one!

Some artists will often resize their art to a smaller canvas so save space/not have to draw as many details too, as most people will only view a piece at max 20% zoom online, so small canvases aren't bad.

I usually use smaller canvas sizes for smaller pieces/ personal art. I prefer smaller canvases because I find them easier to work with since I can omit the finer details and don't have to worry about it since it's personal art. A lot of art I draw on a small canvas are just doodles/ sketches or other stress-relief art.

For commission/ trade work, I do use a larger canvas size so I can put more effort into details, and the pixels don't get all wonky-looking whenever I need to transform lineart. Lineart is more tedious on a larger canvas since it requires more fluid strokes, and I still lack the control for it, but I find the results are more satisfying. That being said, a smaller canvas is easier on my body (but the resulting look not as satisfying) which is why I use them moreso for personal art than paid work.

In terms of receiving/ viewing other artwork, I'm pretty indifferent on whether or not it's on a small canvas. As long as the end quality is nice, I don't mind either way.

I can't stand working on small canvases and will often set mine to absurd dimensions to avoid as much pixelation as possible. My computer can handle it.

I don't mind small canvases, I do use them sometimes!

Most of my pieces start on a 2500x2500 canvas and get cropped accordingly, but I will use 900x900 canvases for chibies and 200x200 for pixel art! As everyone else said, small canvases lend themselves really well to pixel art, or quick sketches!

Me who still uses under 2000×2000: Lol

I absolutely cannot stand drawing on smaller canvases hfjdks; unless it's for pixel art ofc because that kinda comes with the territory, but even then, I prefer to sketch large and shrink it down. I've been working on a pet sim project with some pals recently and the canvas we've been working on is 2000x1800 and it's k i l l i n g me.

i honestly dont rlly care lol most of my canvases are 2000x2000 since my laptop is old and cant rlly handle anything past that (still lags a little with certain brushes 😔) but i also adjust the canvas/crop to make the art seem more centered or just to hide parts of the art im not confident in which can make the px a lot smaller. i dont think it takes away from the quality but i could b wrong 🦍

wow i didnt think i would be the one with the uncommon opinion here. i hate large canvases XD i prefer 1000x1000 or smaller. 2000x2000 is uncomfortably huge for me lol

but my art is pretty simple so i dont really need much canvas space.
