Adopt Tips thread!

Posted 1 year, 2 months ago by Mixpixi

My resource here got over 1k likes, so i decided to turn it into a thread as well!

Ever since i made that resource and finally took my own advice, my toyhouse account has grown exponentially! I'm still by no means a popular designer, but I would love to help more people sell their designs and get recognition for their work!

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───

WHAT TO DO IN THIS THREAD:
- ask for help with adopts! (designing, advertising, pricing, etc)
- seek help with gaining traction as a designer/artist on toyhouse
- share your own tips and tricks for navigating toyhouse as a designer
- provide resources to help people (please let me know if i can add it to my original adopt tips post!)
- feel free to just comment and say hello if you're a small account seeking to grow! I plan to start doing monthly or weekly shoutouts on my bulletins!

I will try to aid everyone who comments seeking help, but other designers are free to help answer questions as well! this is a space to spread knowledge and help each other grow!

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───

RULES:
1: be kind to everyone! Don't say anything if you have nothing nice to say.
2: only provide critique when asked, and be mindful about the difference between actual constructive criticism and being downright hateful.
3: Please refrain from discussing NSFW, gore related, or otherwise triggering adopt design topics. this is a space for artists of all ages to peacefully discuss their work.

Probably the first question lol but anyone have tips on how to have better motivation for creating adopts in general?

Honestly i've been struggling with this a bit recently! creativity tends to come in bursts for some people, and it's perfectly fine to take a break every once in a while. One thing that really motivates me to make adopts is coming up with unique ideas that excite me, like my recent manta designs! I get tired of drawing the same thing over and over, and i find that scrolling thru pinterest a bit and getting inspiration for banger designs helps- alot.

Here's my pinterest board if you wanna see how i get ideas! i really like looking at unique species and challenging myself  to stylize them.

I can't really think of any cliches in particular to avoid, but i've seen alot of people complain about designers reusing color schemes, or about designers making all their designs look similar. Just try to make every design unique and stand out from other designers! mimicking the style of pop designers wont get you anywhere.

Ahh tysm for creating this thread! I rlly need this, I've been trying to sell adopts for a while but with no success TT I always have a ton of ideas for character designs but I can't seem to advertise them well. I think maybe my worst weakness is that I'm not really sure how to edit the picture with the characters in it. Like I just put a solid color or a gradient, and some text but I guess it's not alluring enough? Does anyone have any tips on that?

Hiii!!  I have a question!
I’ve been making adopts for a very long time now, and only recently started posting them here!  In the past, I sold my adopts exclusively in exchange for art, characters, and digital currency, but recently I’ve been trying to save up actual money, and suddenly nobody is really buying anymore (which I guess is understandable, since a lot less people are willing to spend actual real money on these types of things), but it’s been really discouraging!  I’ve found myself putting a lot less effort into my adopts as a result, which definitely doesn’t help, but how am I supposed to make high quality adopts if the work I put in rarely ever ends up paying off?  At the moment, I’m almost always working on a loss, and I don’t know how to change that...  Should I just try to make simpler designs and sell them for cheaper?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated 💕💕

It seems to me like you’ve built a following off of your designs being exchanged for anything but real currency, and thus the people familiar with your designs in the past aren’t willing to pay real currency. A great way to expand your following to new people is hosting design raffles and advertising relentlessly- but I’ve personally gotten alot of recognition from doing weekly raffles.

i also recommend hopping on design trends every once in a while, you can keep an eye on the hot page to see what’s trendy. It takes alot of work to get recognition in the adopt community, but it’s really paid off for me. I hope your designs start selling better!

That’s all really helpful!  I’ll start trying to implement that advice right away >:3

Thank you so much! 💕
