while writing/worldbuilding/drawing/whatever ?

like. you know when your writing and youre like 'hey would it make sense for this character to wear this outfit' but then somehow it ends up with you 6 feet deep in ancient greek fashion and customs . or sometimes its just 'how much and how effective would gasoline be to burn down a whole office building please im not an arsonist im just writing'

yall get what i mean right. righ

ANYWAYS i really like hearing about weird things people have researched for oc/writing stuff, just know that if it's something sensitive, black it out like this or put it under a spoiler tag

both the above are things ive done and lemme tell you. the gasoline thing wouldnt work irl but who cares it looks COOL in the story, or at least thats what i like to think. also i cant draw ancient greek outfits so im still here with one of my characters wearing period-inaccurate clothing

edit: aaaaaand of course i get the ic posting glitch . cant believe ramiel is google searching about arson

Architeuthid

most of the really gory stuff was just morbid curiosity, I must admit - my stories have surprisingly little death and blood and things.

however, when it comes to psychological stuff, well...

 - withdrawal effects of opioids
 - russian mind control chemicals
 - truth serum
 - torture chemicals
 - pain compliance
 - electroshock weapons
 - can the illuminati read my internet history

Looked up a lot on 'how this or that works' in 'another country/state's.

Looked up a lot of gore, ah...poses. Poses in general. Poses for NSFW, etc.

I think everything I look up might be weird. Biblical beards, real life cyclops humans, how the juvenile delinquent system in Ireland works, how long you can survive certain wounds...I'll edit something in if I remember it...I feel like I've searched weirder.

AimPyre

That reminds me when I searched up something horrid (I don't remember what it was) then put in brackets after "chill fbi it's for a book" LMAO

But uh... for writing, probably the weirdest thing I've looked up was simply anatomy stuff for drawing (not any NSFW areas just like the human body in general and getting some... weird results), how certain injuries (from a car accident or falling from a cliff, for example) can cause certain, horribly painful side effects if not death... and also perhaps a few too many 'what does it feel like to fall from a great distance', 'what happens if you overdose on ____', etc.

I swear authors must be the bane of authority's existence sometimes, y'know? Be like

"uh hey boss some dude's looking up how to (INSERT A LOT OF HORRID THINGS HERE)?? that sounds bad we should look into it"

"leave it be, it's just another author"

abakkus

honestly i feel a deep and primal fear every time i have to search for references for feet. please no weird porn please no weird porn please no weird porn

AimPyre

I've learned through looking up references for anatomy, I almost always try 'drawing references' or something similar so hopefully I get a realistic drawing instead of some weird shit y'know

RadiantRaindragon

I search up a lot of strange things late at night.

- Why is cheese yellow

- What happens if you never sleep

- What happens if you sneeze with your eyes open

- Why are kittens so cute

- Amputated fingers

- Why does Google Translate suck

- How long does it take to die of hunger

- What is it like to give birth

And of course, the best thing to do is type the beginning of a sentence (like 'Why do...') and let Google finish it for you.

ChosenUndeaad

"Is it considered necrophilia making out with an undead?"

I- I really needed to know for some reason... and I actually found a really interesting answer

Well, let's see...

  • Researched schizophrenia (and partially depression and DID. However, as this is needed for a One on One roleplay, not the main focus and the character is not even close to being introduced, I haven#t done more research)
  • Torture devices/ways to torture
  • What blood loss does to your body
  • What poison does to your body
  • How well piercings heal
  • Vietcong door traps
  • Door (booby) traps, though I am still researching it (I'm looking for something similar to Saws door traps, like the Scythe Trap (Warning for gruesome imagery and descriptions. Maybe someone can help me?)
  • How long it takes to heal broken bones
FreeFallingUp13

Lol I follow a lot of writing blogs so I tend not to look up stuff like how wounds affect people or drugs or anything.

What I have looked up before, is what regular household objects hold silver, and what kinds of commercially available fireworks explode instead of turning into light. It was to figure out a way to crowd-control a group of frenzied vampires and werewolves.
