It depends what you're looking for. It's not a gallery like dA, but a blogging platform. I feel it's closest to Livejournal or Dreamwidth mixed with tumblr, and is still rough around the edges. I've seen others say it's close to tumblr but with commenting features like reddit.
It can host images, it has tagging, you can post or reblog images/video/text to communities and it'll show up in the feed of anyone who's following it. Posts can be specially labeled as NSFW, Unrebloggable, and Visible to Public/Followers/Mutuals. It doesn't have folders or a fancy landing page for your personal blog but the colors are customizable. It's not nearly as flexible in that manner as tumblr.
Yeah, the devs explicitly said back when they ran the crowdfund to start it up like a year ago that it was based on tumblr and LiveJournal. It's not a gallery, but you can certainly run an art blog there same as with tumblr (although they haven't added sideblogs yet, if you also want a personal; you'd need to log out and log back in to switch right now...). The community search is still iffy, unfortunately, but the rest works pretty well for a site that's still in invite-only beta.
