Covers that are - in your opinion - better than the original song? I think it's kinda cool to see these instances, it sometimes gets me into songs I wouldn't have expected I'd be into cause the cover just slaps so much.

My personal fave is this Smooth Criminal cover by Alien Ant Farm - it just has somm to it that tickles my brain like the original couldn't.

Gosh, I have a lot of covers that I like better than the original, so I'll take a couple of the more recent ones that've caught my eye. So, Alien Ant Farm is one of my favorites too, but I also love the rock/metal covers of Disney songs by Jonathan Young and Caleb Hyles. Particularily their rendition of the Prince of Egypt soundtrack (disclaimer: I know that's not Disney), but the greatest improvement for me is made by Youngs' rendition of Evermore from the live-action Beauty and the Beast film. He gives it the skind of depth that makes my ovaries eplode.

3TEETHS cover of Pumped up Kicks. I like the original and it could be argued that the upbeat tone of it is what creates the memorable lyrical dissonance but I also like THIS. It gives a very happy-sounding melody an industrial, almost Marilyn Manson like reworking, essentially making it a completely different song.

Most people probably like covers of original songs for vocaloid songs, but usually I’m one to favor the original vocaloid versions most and enjoy the covers at a similar level, but second in regard.

That being said, Ado’s cover of Rabuka absolutely blows my heart up. Her vocal skills especially in this song are incredible!! I love the creepy feeling of the original song, but Ado turns the song from a sort of quiet and creepy “stalkerish” atmosphere to an aggressive, outright obsession. It’s really neat, I recommend checking out the original first by hiragi kirai featuring vflower before listening to Ado’s cover just so you can get a feel for both!

Saltuarium

I like the bird and the bee's covers, especially how deep is your love (original by the bee gees). I like their hall and oates covers pretty equally to the originals

and I prefer erasure's covers of abba songs, including voulez-vous

plus the killers' version of shadowplay by joy division, which I actually thought was an original as a kid, and is probably the only one where I only like the cover and dislike the original song.

also seconding disturbed's sound of silence and lera lynn's wolf like me

Well tbf I'm not the type of person who prefers covers over the original, but I think both are cool.

However, there's like a few songs with covers that I prefer over the originals (I won't talk about the lyrics for these songs nor provide links to them, as they have triggering content):

  • MKDR (Chinese ver.) by DECO*27: This is a different language example, but I like this one more than the original Japanese version, since while the original is pretty good, I just vibe more with the Chinese one. Also, Mes's cover slaps.
  • Miy_Yuu's cover of Gankubi by Ukaroku: I love both this and the original one equally, but what makes me love this cover is the extra vocals that makes the whole thing slap so much.
I have more, but I think that's it.

A lot of my favourites have already been mentioned haha, but one of my favourites is I Second That Emotion by Japan, plus the music video is really nice

Sadismancer

Marilyn Manson - Tainted love.

Storm_Clouds

The Devil Went Down to Georgia by Steve Ouimette slaps so hard compared to the original i s2g

VincentVanGoat

Norther's cover of Tornado of Souls definitely beats the original, which was already really fucking good. The keyboard solo really just cemented this as the better version, honestly.
Same reason you'll see me say that The Protomen's cover of The Trooper is the better one. Their cover of Mr. Roboto might be better than the original, but at the very least on very equal terms.

GoodKnight

Creature Feature's cover of Bury a Friend and The Interrupters' cover of Bad Guy

Thornheartless

Definitely Disturbed's cover of the Sound Of Silence, but Jonathan Young also has a cover of it which I love even more

Jonathan Young's covers in general are amazing and I tend to end up preferring his covers to the original a lot
