Do you like black shading?

Dont just think of airbrush shading, there are so many different ways and styles to shade! Do you like black shading, if so what's your favorite style/ approach for black shading?

I personally love it in a lot of lineart styles (when the lineart is part of the shading, thick, stylized stuff etc. I love to shade like that on occasion, like here in my recent sketch. I'm still quite gentle with it tho. I also did slightly more aggressive shading like this in this one I drew a while a go. (lill horror warning)

I also really love black airbrush/soft as well for certain styles and very dynamic, dramatic art. It's not quite for me however. At least for the most part. Black soft shading needs to be smooth af otherwise it looks dirty. Always. So you really need to nail that type of shading for it to look cool & gotta have to have the style for it. If that's the case though, it's siiiiiick

OhMyLawdimPM I love the boondock’s art style so much. It’s like a mix between comic and anime and cartoon (idk how to properly describe it).

In certain cases like hatching shading and cell shading? Of course. I think it looks especially good in comic inspired works or older art. I’m not a fan of smudge or airbrush shading in general, but I think it’s mostly beginner artists who use that. I did too haha. It just looks… dirty? On a similar note, instead of telling beginners artists or artists who smudge shade that it just “looks bad”, tell them what they should try instead and why. Give actual advice and backed criticism, not just “this is ugly”.

i like it when it's used to make the lines look thicker in dark areas, but as far as it being the main/only form of shading, not really. i just think using other colors looks much nicer

I shade black sometimes, it depends on what kind of shading but sometimes it’s really good and sometimes its too muddy it just depends but generally I don’t mind it at all

I think black shading works better if it uses line art as the shading. Like crosshatching or whatever comics have.

yea! Even if you turn down the opacity or just color black in it, it still looks good nonetheless
