Suggestion: Character back-ups

Posted 7 years, 1 month ago (Edited 6 years, 10 months ago) by Anima

Hi o/ not sure if suggested and/or not feasible but it'd be amazing to have some kind of back-up feature in the future or so :') (I'm imagining a neat little zip file with the images of one or several characters if not all at once, or at the very least some kind of encrypted database file if that's any better)

Whenever any kind of error or downtime occurs I just get a massive panic attack thinking of all the information and images (and hence money and time) I've managed to put together being potentially destroyed (of course this is unlikely but I can't help but worry) T T;; Again, not sure how feasible this is but I just thought I'd put the thought out there and gather opinions and/or other points of view?

Meanwhile though, I'll just save up all the files onto my machine manually :')

I second this so hard.

honestly i think people should be responsible for backing up their own stuff? this site already hosts SO MUCH, like a backup would be... a literal copy of everything already on this site, it'd be so much wasted space cuz ppl can't be bothered to create their own local copies. idk maybe it could be a thing for premium members where you get so much backup space, but like.. the idea that the site needs to host not one but two copies of everything you put on it seems a little demanding

in general anything you create you should be backing up yourself. i just posted this on another thread LOL but users are great at breaking shit and someone could trigger a bug tomorrow that wipes every single character profile u never know, back up your stuff now

google drive is completely free, you can literally past all your pages in doc files (that's what i do)

I second this so much! I've been backing my characters up for months and still haven't got them all saved because most of mine have a lot of at, and I terrifies me so much when ever the site is down

i support this!

I'm gonna have to agree with wicked on this. Asking for entire character back-ups for every user, for every user's characters with all that characters credit and info and whatever is attached to that character is kinda demanding. Local back-ups are easy to maintain and you can either store them in a storage site like google drive or store them on a folder and copy it to a flash if you feel the need to. you can rename the files to the credit and make text files for the code or info attached to the character.

mewhaku it might not seem hard off the bat but I'm a smallish account with over 800 images and 99 characters. that's a lot of files to zip down. meanwhile, there are users with 2000+ images just on one character or 1000+ characters. Also, how would you regulate that, only the account holder can download them or is it available for everyone? If everyone can, would the watermarks go with? what if they have custom watermarks? do they download all the images for all the characters at once or do you have to go in character by character and do it one by one? Sure it sounds like a good idea but its a lot of work. The only site I can think of that does this is dA (with their sta.sh file system) which is significantly larger and better funded.

This is why when I knew the site was going down for the server stuff or whatever I made sure all my images were saved in respective character folders on my computer.

I may invest in an external hard drive cause my computer is on the way out tbh. Personally I'm iffy with google drive but for people who need a free storage option that could be really useful. For those with lots of images or characters it may take a while but once caught up it shouldn't be difficult to maintain.

>I don't think it would be difficult to have like, a zip file made from what you've already uploaded though?

This site can barely handle search as-is, and a lot of search is based on simple indexing. You can feel the site chug at every search, even when it's not your own. Imagine the wear and tear on the server with images rather than just plain old text? I think this is a feature well past the limit of the site right now. Automating a text/css backup with images, having it put it together in the backend, and then pushing it forward back to the user sounds like a lot of work. Multiply all that by repeated use by a single user, or most users at any announced future downtime. The pressure on the system would be insane. The site would be DDoSing itself.
