Opinions on the "same outfit" trope?

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, a lot of the time in cartoons or other animated media characters will more or less be permanently stuck in a single outfit. Like in scooby doo or spongebob you almost never see any of the main cast in a different outfit to the point their outfits are synonymous to the characters themselves. It's even gotten to the point where a lot of cartoons will poke fun at the idea by showing the character(s) only have hundreds of that one single outfit in their wardrobes (think bee movie lmao)

Personally, I'm wondering what you're opinions on this are. Mainly asking this because I've noticed myself doing this to my own characters in in my comic, and I've been debating on weather or not I want to change things up. On one hand I like it because, at least for me, designing outfits can be difficult. When I manage to make a good one I wanna stick with it, ya know? But I'm curious to hear what other people think!

im being called tf out smh,,,     some of my ocs just. Dont. have designs yet bcs im god awful at designing/thinking of outfits. half tempted to just make one of them a nudist bcs tbh? not out of character.

back to the question, i feel like it's fine. having one outfit can make a character recognizable, and its really just a nitpick (and rude to expect the artist to be able to created 10+ outfits for a character, that will all be seen maybe once or twice just to avoid the trope). Having additional outfits can be fun, but it's not necessary.

Kirbygal

I never thought this was considered a trope lol

But yeah this is also me XD I'm also lazy designing clothes and I'm not good at doing so either so when I do go out of my way to design a creative or different outfit, I keep it for that oc. Most of my ocs though end up wearing either generic suits or jeans and t shirt lol orrrr wear certain colors a lot

I don’t really mind, personally! I sometimes design alt outfits and usually a character will have a reason why they don’t have any, either because I can’t be bothered at that moment to design them or they legitimately only have one outfit. However I almost always draw them in their main outfit so they are recognisable!

Basically all my OCs have one standard outfit that I draw them in; it makes them recognizable as a character for me and I usually really like their one outfit / it goes with their aesthetic or is significant for some reason. Even though i have alt outfits for most of them, I typically draw all of them in their base outfit! (So basically what I’m tryna say here is I‘m fine with it when people only have their OCs wear one outfit.)

roziist

its not realistic at all but youd catch me dead in a ditch faster than itd take me to design more than one outfit for each of my ocs LOL

but fr i dont mind it.... i like characters w memorable designs and outfits are always the biggest indicator of who that specific character is, at least for me 🦍

GEIGERGEARZ

honestly, I don't mind it whatsoever

for a big tv show, it's probably for the best they only wear one outfit because

1) easier to animate the same outfit instead of different ones constantly

2) recognizable outfits so you know it's the character

3) good for merchandise lol

I think most people do it, and while it's fun to come up with neat outfits, if you're doing a comic or show or something, it's totally fine :)

Most of my ocs only have 1 outfit, some have 2 or 3 but that's it. I think it just comes down to design, and since they're not real, there's not really any point to me in designing them a full wardrobe that they'll never wear... The point of a character in a comic/manga/book wearing the same thing is usually that it's easy to recognize them, as they are often all drawn in a similar way by the same person because of their drawing style and thus, face shapes tend to be very similar, and there's only so much you can do with hair etc to make them stand out. Especially if you need to draw that same character 19372417419 times in a row, it's much easier to draw the character in the exact same outfit, than having to come up with 17 outfits and changing them all the time. Most of the time, readers of these comics wont really notice or care about an outfit change anyway, unless it's relevant to the story or character; such as Erza from Fairy tail.

So I don't mind at all, but that's me :)

AlleycatIrony

i like my characters to be realistic, so i have many outfits for them :0 usually i just find smthn on pinterest and think 'yeah X would wear that' and slap it on them in a pic bc i'm shit at outfit design rip

it is a little pet peeve of mine when characters only ever wear one outfit, but more-so w/ shows that use actors and stuff and not so much cartoons - ig mostly bc in the real world u usually have more than one outfit but animating multiple outfits can be a bit of a task

I like it! I think it makes a lot of sense, especially if the character is being used for a project where they're being drawn over and over again: it's much easier to keep track of the same outfit than having to organize and design a few different ones. I suppose it also depends on what kind of story it is: if it's a more serious drama, for instance, it'd probably not pass as well. But for something more light-hearted and cartoony I think it tracks. Having a single outfit for a character, or a main outfit and a couple slight variations on it for special instances, is good because if it's an effective design, it'll stick and maybe become iconic to some. For a lot of media that's the goal: you want your characters to be easily recognizable. A limited wardrobe makes that easier.

^my stance is pretty much @ampers-nd's. It's fun to joke about, but I see the same-outfit trope as a means to keep a character consistent & recognizable.

For me, I like giving my characters a main outfit & everything else in their wardrobes are made up as I need them

I think it depends on the type of show. For example, if it's some story-driven/action show, I believe the clothes should change. You know, clothes are delicate and can tear easily. I think if it's like Spongebob or some other show that is a slice-of-life, silly TV show, it doesn't necessarily matter because each episode could happen at any time and don't have to happen in an every day basis. TV shows with ongoing story usually go on a sort of calender (a show calender, like with a timeline and such, for example, One Piece or Naruto. For a more "cartoon" example, it would be something like Adventure Time). TL;DR: Story with an ongoing plot should change clothing in my opinion !! but it doesn't really matter as most of my OCs have like 3-4 outfits..
