Opinions on the "same outfit" trope?

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, a lot of the time in cartoons or other animated media characters will more or less be permanently stuck in a single outfit. Like in scooby doo or spongebob you almost never see any of the main cast in a different outfit to the point their outfits are synonymous to the characters themselves. It's even gotten to the point where a lot of cartoons will poke fun at the idea by showing the character(s) only have hundreds of that one single outfit in their wardrobes (think bee movie lmao)

Personally, I'm wondering what you're opinions on this are. Mainly asking this because I've noticed myself doing this to my own characters in in my comic, and I've been debating on weather or not I want to change things up. On one hand I like it because, at least for me, designing outfits can be difficult. When I manage to make a good one I wanna stick with it, ya know? But I'm curious to hear what other people think!

I personally have a few outfits I'll stick OCs in, and I usually have tabs for their outfits, like this! (her gallery is outdated, pls ignore that!!!)

I think something fun is if the character always wears a yellow shirt and black jeans.... maybe on a colder day they wear a yellow jacket instead! or in the spring they wear black shorts! keeping it the same, so it fits them (since outfits are always connected to ocs) but still givign you some wiggle room!

I fall into this trope a lot because I don't really like designing clothes either. I think the trope is funny, even though it's not probable or realistic to have a closet full of one outfit.

BlueTomoshibi

I same outfit my OCs but usually handwave it with "oh they like wearing this jacket, etc"

Its kinda twofold - one, its immediately recognizable as that character; the outfit is simply part of that design. But also like you pointed out, its hard to design new outfits.

😳 I'm in this and I don't like it /j

Anyway, I'm in this trope because I don't like clothes, but i will give my characters outfits for the winter/summer sometimes. As a treat.

They only do that to avoid having to make new animation for that outfit

A lot of the industry is copy paste for time saving so they can meet deadlines on time

As for ocs, I don't like same outfit designs unless it's supposed to be a uniform that all the characters wear. That's just me tho.

I really am no good at designing outfits so I mostly just stick with one or two per character. It’s a familiarity and consistency thing, and it makes commissioning art simpler.

Not that I actually think they only ever wear the one outfit everyday, but rather I think that it’s their favorite, or in some characters’ cases, it’s a signature outfit that they use for recognition with fans. I don’t really care much about fashion or outfits to put any thought into a whole wardrobe, but that’s just me. If other people think about that, I think that’s really cool. ^^

Honestly, I sometimes make alt. outfits for my OC's, but most of them have like... 1 outfit... because I'm lazy. I don't mind this trope, but tbf I think it just doesn't work well in live action (Unless the setting is fantastical). But I don't think I've seen a live-action tv show/movie in a realistic setting that has this trope so far, though I could be wrong.

Outfit design is hard because im clueless when it comes to fashion... better one well designed outfit than several poorly designed ones :P having alt outfits is fun though, and drawing the same one over and over gets kinda boring

I absolutely love making outfits for my characters

They have different ones in comics, they absolutely have different one for drawings, don't even get me started on sims, basically I have a whole tab for just the outfits for each on here :'D

coming up with new outfits is hard lol. personally I try to give at least my main characters some different clothes because that's more realistic and at least for me it's super boring to draw the same character in the same clothes 100 times lol. but I think "same outfit" helps to keep a character recognizable though, and it's also useful to save time and if you're getting art from other people of the character, as long as the outfit isn't insanely hard to draw it makes it easier for them because they don't have to try to guess at which outfit you'd prefer the character to be drawn in.

if you're doing characters in a comic, it's probably going to be easier to use same outfits and won't pull people out of the story, since like you mentioned it's something already done a lot in animated media. you can also use your characters as justification for always having the same clothes, what I mean like if a character has the personality where they dislike change and like to keep everything the same, that would explain them always wearing the same clothes. or maybe they're literally the exact same clothes and the character is too lazy to wash them or something, or I have a character who always wears the same clothes bc she's a ghost and that's what she wore when she died. there's definitely ways to do "same outfit" without looking like you just can't come up with anything lol, but tbh that probably wouldn't work for every single character in your comic

but if you get bored drawing a character the same way or feel like it is distracting from the story, you could make new outfits like how @Scotts said, using the same colour palette but changing the types of clothes, that way you still keep a character's recognizability and consistency while also spicing things up a little and making it feel more realistic. also I looked through your page and seems like your characters are mostly non human with a lot of different colours and species, and that will help a lot with keeping them recognizable even if you change their outfits since they already look very distinct

I mean tbf i usually draw my ocs in only one specific outfit for ease lol, but in writing it's a lot easier to change things up cause you don't really have to think too hard, you've just gotta say "they put on *insert clothing that's different from their regular design*" so technically they do change outfits sometimes when i write about them lol.

but i honestly don't mind if a character is always in the same clothes so long as the story and characters themselves are interesting.
