aside from the gargoylism phenomenon, automatons are probably the newest species in exulas! they're also the first to be completely man-made, as it were - qhich is why there's still some debate as to whether they should actually be classed as a species or not.
despite all that they've developed very quickly; most if not all of the more recent models run purely on ambient magic, although there are some (usually older models) that still need physical fuel of some kind to continue running.
automatons are given individual make & model numbers & such, and oftentimes are named by whoever made them, but it's also very common for an automaton to choose what's generally referred to as a virtue name for themself! you'll find a lot of automatons with names reflecting a trait or skill that they value, like patience or integrity.
the first prototypes were made in anslas, but the technology is considered to have been perfected in the shallows of erysea. nowadays you can find automatons practically anywhere in exulas, although different models are made to better thrive in different climates/terrains/etc!
recently, the lord protector in anslas chose an automaton as his vice president - there's some discourse about potential motives behind it, but generally speaking it's a pretty big development for automatons being acknowledged as sentient individuals. there are a few automatons in lower positions of power, but this is the first time one has ever been so high up in the ranks.
