at some point of the story, the farmhouse he's been living in for years burns down along the cornfield on his side in a fire.

Kazues parents were very abusive physically and mentally while he was growing up. They would force him to be the perfect “daughter“. They were also very transphobic and would misgender him on purpose just to spite him and hurt his feelings. He has never felt loved by his parents and it causes such hurt and self-doubt within him. After all those years of abuse caused Kazue to leave his family and stop talking to them. Due to all the abuse Kazue got as child, he holds this self-doubt that no one will ever truly love him if his own parents couldn’t even love him.

due to the length and severity of the physical abuse and neglect experienced from age 0-5 her brain didn't get to develop properly, thus didn't get to form and store memories correctly either. She doesn't remember any of it before being taken away by child services and since her and her brother was abandoned and they couldn't find her mother, there was no real evidence in her mind that the abuse happened. she copes with the situation with pure denial and used pretty much anyone who spews the nonsense of ''parents would never hurt kids'' and ''child services is evil'' to fuel confirmation bias and believe the grass is greener on the other side.
up until she sees the pictures from the police report herself as a teen, which pretty much shattered her coping mech as she can't fathom what she could had done to deserve that bad of treatment. especially since at that point she's lived with a child for years and could never harm her.
