Tek's trainer had their best friend over, and that always made Tek just a little bit nervous. The friend was outgoing and innovative, so Tek knew that trouble was coming. Tek watched closely from the fence line. His heart sank when they entered the field that he and his herd of goats stayed in.

"And it's safe for them?" Tek overheard the trainer asking.

The friend gave a firm nod.

"Vet says she uses it on her longhorns all the time, and she's never had a problem," came the assurance.

Tek continued to watch them closely as they approached the goats. They had a bag full of...something with them, so Tek got a little closer to the people. He wasn't sure that he would attack his trainer or the friend, but the collie definitely made his disapproval known. The trainer chuckled, offering Tek a smile.

"Don't worry, kiddo," the trainer said calmly. "It's a fun thing; look."

The trainer wrapped one of Tek's goats up in a big hug, and the friend produced some kind of can from the bag. The friend shook the can, then sprayed down the goat's horns in something that seemed to glow. Tek watched closely, eyes widening once he realized that the goat's horns were now shining silver. Though he was still a little concerned about the goats, his trainer and the friend were being gentle enough, and the silver stuff didn't seem to be hurting them. It actually looked kind of cool.

"Just wait until night falls," the friend said with a grin.

So Tek waited.

-----

It was October, so as the evening fell the air grew colder on the Slate Mine estate. As usual, Tek was outside with the herd, keeping a close eye on them as they settled down for the night. Their newly-painted horns seemed to sparkle under the moonlight, but then something incredible happened. The trainer's Halloween plans quite literally came to light.

A car drove up the estate with its lights on. The lights reflected off of the goats' horns and caused them all to shine so brightly that Tek felt as though he had been blinded. It was simultaneously awesome and terrifying. Tek's eyes finally adjusted, and he noticed how excited the goats looked. He sighed, laying down again and resting his head on his paws.

Halloween was weird.
