Chapter 1

Tikow Jay was not having a pleasant day, in fact it was quite the opposite, terrible, disastrous even. To start it all off his alarm failed and he woke up and hour after he was supposed to be at work, this alone was bad enoguh but today he had a meeting he was supposed to attend. Ironically the company he worked for was the very one that manufactured his alarm clock, not that it made a difference, he’d still have to purchase a new one later that day.
Currently he was dashing across the city, trying to tie his tie as he ran, briefcase tucked under one arm. He was about halfway to the building and glanced down at his wrist to check the time, but his watch was not on his wrist, in his haste he must have forgotten it.
Maybe looking down was not the best idea, he ran right into another eugene. “Hey!” She snapped as they both tumbled to the ground, landing in a filthy puddle “Watch it!” His briefcase bust open and muttering his apologies he shoved all the now soggy papers back in before looking up at the stranger.
She had long green fur “Welcome to the city. Best get used to this if you plan to stay long in akota, I’m terribly sorry but I’ve got to go.” He said this all in one breath before dashing off, on a normal day he might have given her some money as an apology, but he had also forgotten his wallet- anyways it was akota, worse things happened all the time.

Panting, his suit and fur soaking wet, looking like he’d just crawled out of the sewer, he arrived at the building the meeting was taking place in- if it wasn’t already over. He was in the building, everything would go smoothly from here right?
Wrong, a security guard stepped in, blocking the stairs. “Your ID?”
Tikow reached into his pocket, but then he remembered what he had forgotten… his wallet. “Damn!” He looked up at the security guard, someone he never really payed much attention to but had crossed paths with many a time before. “I forgot it, please I’m really really late.” He tried to make his was past but it was hopeless.
“Your identification.”
“C’mon, uh-“ He looked at the nametag “Kette- it’s me! Tikow Jay! You know meeeeee, pleasee, it’s an emergency, you’ve gotta let me through.” Even if if he didn’t look incredibly out of place, even if he was as well dressed and prepared as usual, he still doubted that he’d be allowed past without his ID, but now? Certainly not, but what other choice did he have? What could he do?
“No identification, no entry.” The guard didn’t even appear the slightest bit remorseful, his face as expressive as a slab of stone…. Actually less so.

He sank down to the floor, another security man appearing out of nowhere to take him away. “Please.” He was one the verge of tears, right now, today it felt as if the whole world was out to get him. Not that his days were usually glamorous or anything, but compared to this, they seemed like a dream come true. “My boss is gonna kill me!” that might sound like an exaggeration, but in his line of work… well he didn’t want to find out.
“Let him through” It was a cold voice, clear and cruel. He knew who that was, but still turned to look at him- black fur and a black suit, all blending into the shadows except his golden eyes… his boss…. Speak of the devil and all that.
“Merke! Sir, I am so so sorry, I know it’s no excuse but you see-“
“You’re late.” He interrupted.
Tikow wanted to shrink, to become smaller and smaller until he no longer existed in this dimension “Is the meeting over?”
“No.” What a relief! He wasn’t too late! “It was postponed.” Even better, maybe he wouldn’t be in so much trouble.
“Sir thats-“
He cleared his throat and Tikow shut up, he clearly wasn’t done talking “It was postponed, because you have the files for our presentation.” Ohhh no, that was not good, not good at all.
“Yes sir! I have them right-“ he opened the briefcase and sludgewater spilled out of it onto the white wood floors, the papers floating, smudged beyond legibility. “…here.”
Zoriel Merke said nothing, but he was so angry you could practically see smoke rising off of him. Tikow noticed that the guards had vanished, they knew of Merke’s wrath and wanted nothing to do with it. Tikow eyed the area where he knew his superior kept his gun, but Zoriel would not be so kind as to simply shoot him on the spot.
