Lava

Sonnet was beyond annoyed. His eyes were narrowed, ears flattened, and every other Quirlicorn within a certain radius likely could feel the irritation radiating from his aura. General courtesy said he should care that he was probably scaring whatever Quirlicorns saw him, but he couldn’t bring himself to at the moment.

Especially because he felt dangerously close to hissing at the next Quirlicorn that approached him.

If that was Psychomyth or even his grandmother Radiance, so be it.

He really should have never mentioned how the last May Race had gone. (Which was decently well, thank you very much). But he definitely regretted telling his grandmother how fun it had been. Because it meant the moment word reached Candentia about the May Races, Psychomyth was pushing Radiance to push him to join the May Races yet again.

Again.

At first it wasn’t all that bad.

He was just mildly miffed that he was being forced to leave Candentia, and go attend the Races. The last time had been his choice. This time it wasn't. (No, his general annoyance had nothing to do with not being able to find his father, last time).

Then, the rumbling of the ground started.

Which, still wasn’t too bad.

No, what Sonnet was currently most annoyed about, was the lava flowing under his hooves, pouring out of what was once a nice mountain, and engulfing the ground beneath him.

He could feel the heat beneath his hooves, as he lifted them up, to avoid the lava flows. He gave a rather futile attempt to avoid singing his tail, before deciding to simply book it out of the area. Goodbye May Races.

Or rather, he was probably just doing whatever the Greater Deities wanted him to do. There was plenty of magic in the air, afterall. (The realization that the lava probably had something to do with the Greater Deities and the May Races did nothing to help his mood).

Nor did recognizing the feeling of magic in the air help his attempts to control his own magic. Sure, there was already plenty of fire and lava around him, but he really didn’t think adding more would have been a good idea. So he retracted the tendrils of magic, before he burned everything even more.

Now insert another Quirlicorn bounding up behind him, the mare’s magic rippling through the air as she dodged the lava.

He side eyed her, judging every aspect of the newcomer.

She grinned at him in response.

Did his flattened ears not convey his desire to not be approached? Sure, he loved being around other Quirlicorns, but once in a while, he just wanted to sulk in peace. This, was one of those times.

“This is fun, don’t you think?” she said.

“This is the exact opposite of fun!” Sonnet snapped back. Could his ears go back any further? He doubted it.

She simply gave her best attempt at a shrug, given how they both were fleeing the incoming lava. “Mind telling me your name? You remind me of some quirlicorn, but I can’t quite place it.”

“I’m surprised you don’t know me.”
