“Rosethorn! There you are. Come inside- it’s urgent.”

Rosethorn’s ears flattened as he cautiously padded into the medicine den. It had been the first sunny day in what felt like moons in the height of Newleaf, and the good weather in turn had brought a sense of good feeling to the young medicine cat.  He had thought it would be a good time to finally go collect more borage leaves for Poppystep since the she-cat was nursing having kitted only a few sunrises ago. But now, after returning to camp with the leaves in his muzzle, the sense of urgency he heard in his mentor Hailfur’s call clawed away at any sense of ease he had.

“What’s happening- what’s wrong?” He questioned the senior medicine cat as he moved to the back of the den, placing the borage leaves down in the neatly arranged stock of herbs.

“Is something the matter with Poppystep?”

“No, no. Nothing’s wrong with her. I checked on her earlier, she’s fine.” Hailfur spoke, not meeting his gaze as she shifted her paws.

“You see Rosethorn-”

“What about her kits then?” Rosethorn interrupted impatiently, his words filled with unease.

“No! They are all fine!” Snapped Hailfur, furry flashing across her face. At once though, she saw a pained expression overcome Rosethorn. Sighing, she relented.

“I’ve had a vision from StarClan,” She began, softer now.

“Listen. There’s…there’s no easy way to say this…”

“Say what exactly?” Rosethorn spoke, his voice cracking on the last syllable.

“I’m afraid… I'm not going to be here with you for much longer.”

Rosethorn’s eyes widened in horror. What in StarClan’s name was that supposed to mean? Was Hailfur going to leave the camp? Leave ShadowClan? Unless…she meant…

“In my vision, I was walking alone through the forest at night. I’m not exactly sure what I was meant to be doing- maybe I was looking for you? But there was no one else around. Then, I thought I heard your voice in the distance! I ran towards the sound, but then suddenly the grass beneath my paws turned into asphalt!” Hailfur was speaking frantically now.

“I realized I was on the Thunderpath, I saw a monster coming, and I tried to move! Tried to run! I really did but…” Hailstorm stopped abruptly.

“Rosethorn,” She spoke very calmly now, finally meeting the young cat’s gaze.

“I had a vision of my death.”

No. No, no, no, no. That couldn’t have been right. He couldn’t have just heard that Hailfur was going to die. Hailfur was perfectly healthy! And not that old- she still had moons upon moons to serve her clan! To help her clanmates! To help him! Besides, he had never heard of such a sort of vision before! StarClan didn’t just go around giving out an appointed time and location where cats were supposed to drop dead!

“Surely, you’re joking.” Rosethorn spoke, forcing all of the will within him to choke out a laugh.

“No. I’m really not.” Hailfur replied, sadness sounding through her mew.

“But you can’t just leave me!” Anger suddenly bristled through Rosethorn’s pelt.

“I just received my full medicine cat name a moon ago! You can’t leave me on my own yet!” He felt as hot tears began to stream down his face. Hailfur padded to his side and rested her face on his shoulder. In turn, he buried his face into her pelt. Her reassuring touch reminded himself so much when he was a mere kit- lost in the forest after running away from his twolegs. He was a kittypet then, with no family and then no home to speak of. Hailfur had found him and taken him into the clan, proclaiming him to be the next medicine cat as StarClan had shown her in her dreams. Since then, she had been the closest thing to a mother he’d ever had.

“Listen to me, Rosethorn,” Hailfur spoke at last.

“You are a medicine cat. You know so, so much more than you think. StarClan will always be there to guide your pawsteps and show you what’s right even when you’re afraid. As they have guided me.”

But as Rosethorn choked back a sob, he realized he didn’t want StarClan’s guidance. All he wanted was for Hailfur to stay with him.
