Summary:

The two teenagers argued about what to do next; Artemis feeling that helping out Vicar seemed like the right thing to do in light of an unfair imprisonment and Mary-Lou being more concerned with finding a place to stay for the night.

They followed the road and soon found a town, and they were hosting a festival today. There was a central stage with music and performance, food being prepared, and a big crowd. Artemis could see the guard captain moving Vicar through the crowd, seeming distracted. Before he moved towards them, he noticed that at the other side of the festivities were cages with animals; specifically a domesticated bear and a young deer. There was an empty cage next to it, and a dead deer being roasted over a big fire. Artemis dragged Mary-Lou towards the cages anxiously. He needed to save the poor animal. As it turned out, the doors of the deer and the bear cages shared a lock. The bear was domesticated and had a chain around its neck though, so it would probably be fine? Artemis told Mary-Lou to stand guard. He rolled his eyes, still not wanting to get too involved in local conflicts, but played along. Artemis successfully and quietly broke the lock, opened the door and jumped into the deer cage to startle the poor animal. That worked, and it jumped out and ran through the crowd in a panic. People made way for it and many yelled in surprise, this in turn scared the bear. It threw itself against the bars and door, which came open, and the bear jumped out, tackled Mary-Lou, and then the chain around its neck yanked it back. Artemis left his cage and fled for the forest, like one does after a prank.

YES

Summary:

As it turned out, Mary-Lou had not ran to the forest like Artemis, but the deer had. He could see it, standing in the treeshade. It looked at him curiously. He felt like the expression carried a certain teasing supersiority, but he reminded himself that deer do not emote like humanoids and he was probably imagining it. Artemis looked through his rations, but found nothing deer-appropriate to attract it with. Then again, it didn’t seem to need attracting, it let him come close and touch it’s nose. “I’m going to call you Derby. I have to go to the town now, I think my friend is injured. Will you come?” Derby looked uninterested. “Alright, see you later then.”

Back in the town, Artemis kept his hood up, worried that there might be consecuences of his “prank” which included setting a bear loose onto a crowd.. guilt was starting to set in. Gathering his bearings in a cobbled alley plaza with a fountain in the middle, he looked around, trying to discern what the general atmosphere was like and if he was perhaps being wanted by the guard, or where Mary-Lou might have gone to. Instead of finding out any of those things, he failed to notice the theft of his rations as it happened. His bag just felt lighter suddenly, and by the time he realized the thief was probably long gone, but he looked around anyway if anyone suspicious was present. He saw Vicar, coming towards him.

Summary:

Mary-Lou had decided to go into a tavern. He’d had the air knocked out of him by a bear and got some nasty bruises and maybe an injured rib or two. And when he’d recovered enough to stand up and look around, Artemis was nowhere to be seen. A tavern seemed like the most logical meetup place, and like the most relaxing resting place. He got out his period-appropriate wooden pipe and tobacco that he’d brought along to replace his cigarettes, lit it clumsily and started smoking. The lowkey rush of nicotine made him feel more at ease, and he looked around for someone to talk to while he waited and rested. He spotted Vicar. “Heyy, so you work here now?” Mary-Lou sat down at the table the man was wiping. He stopped wiping and sighed in response. “Yeah, community service is part of the rehab concept.” He made an encompassing gesture at the establishment with the hand holding the cloth, “the irony isn’t lost on me.” Remembering what Artemis said earlier, Mary-Lou asked: “do you want us to help you bail you out of here?” Vicar sat down across from him, dropping all pretense of working. He shrugged dismissively. “Eh, whatever, it’s not that bad. Might even be good for me. Make me a worthy member of society and all that.” Was he talking with sarcasm or resignation? Mary-Lou understood the guilt of an addict, the scorn of everyone else and that it might very well be both. “Are you still going to do the… blackmail thing?” Vicar rolled his eyes and half-laughed, hald-scoffed. “No, no, you’re fine. I’m not interested in the galactic council, et-cetera. Let’s leave that in the past.” “You’re not from here, are you? The way you operated that transcom…” Vicar laughed and looked down. “You caught me. I already know all about the galactic council.” He pronounced galactic council with the irony of someone who not only knows that there isn’t one, but who was around for the memes about it a couple of years back. Mary-Lou smiled amusedly, tried to blow a smoke ring and failed. Vicar suddenly leaned in more closely and looked at him intensely. “Enough about me, I want to know about you.” “Oh, uhh,” Mary-Lou stammered in response. “I don’t know if you’re flirting, but you should know that i don’t do.. love.” The short man raised his eyebrows in response. “Are you.. more of a physical type?” He still seemed too interested. “No, nothing of the kind, I, uh. Looking at people is nice but that’s about it.” These people don’t have words like aroace, he thought, forgetting that the human in front of him was, by local standards, an alien. Vicar looked at him with the usual amounts of allo confusion and doubt, but also with enough disappointment that it was clear that he seemed to get the overal message.

Summary:

For a moment, Mary-Lou thought that Vicar might storm out, dramatically trailing glittering tears behind him in slow motion like girls in anime did sometimes, but he composed himself. “Where’s your.. friend?” Oh, right. He had planned on being mad and then forgiving him for the bear attack, but maybe he should be more worried that his travelling companion hadn’t shown up yet. “I don’t know, I should go looking for him.” “I’ll help.”

Mary-Lou was following Vicar, a look of relief on his face. Artemis ran and hugged him, feeling embarassed by his own perceived childishness. Mary-Lou groaned in pain as he was tackled by the elf. “Owww… that bear did quite a number on me, you know?” Artemis froze and began to apologize. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, it was a stupid idea, I didn’t mean for the bear to get out, I shouldn’t have ran away, but I saved the deer, his name is Derby, I’m so sorry I hurt you and left you,-” Vicar interrupted, suddenly angry. “It was you? You let that bear lose? Do you know what you’ve done? People got hurt! Saya from the Amola family got her face clawed off!” Mary-Lou held up a hand to stop him. “We’ll go apologize. Where can we find them?”

Author's Notes

I've found a writing voice! Yay! (this was fun!) I keep debating whether or not to remove the oracle results, but I'll leave them I think (lazyness), and I might make a separate version with just the "summaries" in it.

because of my characters backstories heavy stuff is likely to keep coming up, I'll have to see how I can find the balance between touching on them topics but not exhausting myself with them.
