Chapter 1

Cyrus walked along the sandy beach. Debris stuck every which way in the sand as he passed. The shipwreck had left a significant impact on the shoreline, and they were all tasked with salvaging what they could from the wreckage. The waves lapped at his feet as he picked up mostly intact planks of wood from the sand, carrying it to the makeshift pile before returning to the water’s edge to grab another armful of what was being washed in by the current. His fur was sticky from the seawater and sand, leaving him uncomfortable during his search. Many other Chimereons went about their own work around him, many flying and swimming further from shore to find other larger pieces of the ship. A large crate was buried in the sand ahead of him, so Cyrus quickly trotted over to it. He would have to work on digging around it as it was over halfway under the sand, but it seemed to be fully intact, the paint stating “supplies” in red was barely legible anymore and barnacles had collected on the outer edge. The sand was soft and warm as he began to dig, but gave way to cooler, more wet sand as he continued down. It took him almost an hour to work out half of the crate before he realized he would need help moving it to the pile. The box was much larger than expected and actually carried many items needed for a ship repair. Extra sail patches, rope, and tar were all inside along with other various small items. Cyrus called over one of the larger Chimereons on the beach to help him deliver it to the main gathering pile before leaving again to continue his hunt. The rest of the day didn’t yield anymore large finds such as the crate. Many bottles and small bits of wood filled the sack he’d also found and was now using to carry his finds. Cyrus had also found a couple of gold coins that he’d returned to Rokusho, but nothing else of value. It was nearing nighttime when he’d finished filling his sack up once again. The walk back was filled with the smell of the sea air and bright yellows and oranges of the sunset lining the edge of the ocean waters. The waves had receded for the low tide of the evening and tide pools were filled with the small creatures usually hidden away. Upon his return, Cyrus noticed that a large bonfire had been made on the beach with many of the Chams of today sitting around conversing. Food was being handed out by the volunteers who’d foraged and cooked for those helping out. A wide array of veggies and seafood meats lay out on display for Chimereons to come and pick what they wanted. Fruit smoothies served in coconuts were the beverage of choice by many, and Cyrus followed suit. He sat and ate quietly on some rocks alone, watching the sun set as some Chams played in the water below. The pile of debris they had salvaged that day seemed enough to rebuild at least a ship 2/3 the size of Rokusho’s original ship, with some bits of wood to spare. Cyrus didn’t know if he’d stick around for the full day to help out again tomorrow, but for now he was content with the work he’d contributed to the group. When the sun had fully set, Cyrus headed into the treeline to make himself a hammock for the night. Many Chams had already made themselves shelters or beds of some sort, others chose to lie on the beach under the night sky. Once all was made, Cyrus set up along the edge of the trees, giving himself the ability to see the sky and ocean waves as he reclined. It was a good long day of work today and no one knew what tomorrow would bring.
