Calvin perched in his hay covered loft, hugging his knees, watching a woman that months before he would have reviled as his captor. Phoebe held a sleeping child in her arms. Barely 5, Nike was already somewhat lanky for her age, but Phoebe held her all the same. She sang softly as she paced lazily around the room-of-a-house below, Nike drooling on her shoulder, but Phoebe didn’t seem to mind.

Watching them brought an odd feeling. Calvin pulled the stiff but well made blanket he had been given closer to his chest, feeling a strange kind of warmth. Not the warmth of the blanket, but something inside. He’d watched Phoebe from up here for a long time now, and she was always so… selflessly giving. Giving everything to her child. To… Well, to his child. That felt odd to admit. But right now, not as scary as it’d been before.

Calvin leaned his head sideways on his knee, a pensive kind of mood overtaking him. He wondered if maybe… There was room for him to fit into all of this. …As… a family. He closed his eyes, and, like Nike, soon fell asleep to the sounds of a mother’s love.
