 Ayumi

Of Frogs and Dreams

Ayumi slept, dozing on the side of a small pond he didn’t even realize the sleeve of his robe trailed into the water. Multiple pairs of eyes peered out at him from under lilypads and inside logs.  ‘How dare this large creature sully their pond,’ one frog croaked, ‘it will dirty it all up! Just look at how it drools disgustingly, and the sounds it makes!’ he hops in frustration, throat bulging ready to wake and frighten the creature away. ‘Do you think it means to eat us?’ Another smaller frog chirps fearfully, cowering under some fallen leaves.  ‘You know it would just spit you out if you defend yourself properly. You have been practicing, haven’t you?’ The first frog retorts, its bulging throat deflating at the thought that the creature may actually be hungry when it awakens.  The dextroluma in question yawns and turns over causing all the little amphibians to scatter. He wiggles himself more into the bed of moss he found, trying to make himself comfortable again.  The frogs watching him only start to reemerge when his soft sleeping sounds resume. ‘I knew it! He’s going to eat us!’ The smaller frog mirpped out fearful and shaking under their leaf. ‘This is it, it’s the end times and we are all going to be made into soup!’  ‘Don’t be foolish! And stop that crying. If you don’t want to be eaten, then you shouldn’t be making so much noise!’ The larger frog shoots out their tongue, smacking the smaller one on the eye. ‘I have heard enough of your nonsense. Is all you do moan and complain?”  “Why are you being so loud?” A soft voice startles the two frogs into hiding once again. Ayumi sat up yawning and stretching. “I didn’t know there were frogs at this pond are you new here?” The larger frog starts, did this huge creature understand them? Surely not. He swims over to where the smaller one was hiding fearfully under their leaves. He squashes them down farther into the leaf pile with his own body. Nothing was going to happen to his friend on his watch after all!  Ayumi looks around. “Oh, maybe they were just in my dream. Too bad I bet they looked really pretty too. I would have liked to see them.” He stretches again, “Ah well I guess I should head back Mama probably is looking for me.” He stands up and gathers his robe to put it on then notices the soaking sleeve. “Ah she’s not going to be happy about that either.” He folds it up and looks over the pond again. “Well goodbye little friends. I hope you like the pond!” he waves, still not sure if they were even there and heads back to Belinay’s house.
