Sweet Potato soon discovered that Dame didn't know much about raising an egg.

They understood, of course; Dame had never had an egg before. Loop de Loop had already raised an egg of his own before raising another with Potato, so they weren't alone in figuring it out. But not only did Dame not know about raising an egg, she was putting a lot of the responsibility onto Potato.

"You know," Sweet Potato said, "how about you watch the egg for a bit?"

Dame nodded. "We can watch it together," she said, and curled around the egg and the vaporeon both, preventing Potato from getting up. And, of course, Dame was so happy, they couldn't tell her to get up.

Sweet Potato didn't mind helping Dame with the egg, but it was like Dame expected them to, and they weren't sure how to feel about that.

One day, they were taking care of the egg alone. They didn't feel bad about it–Prim had insisted on some one-on-one time with the "bestie," and Dame had made sure Sweet Potato was fine before leaving–but it gave them some time to think. Sure, they had a lot of experience raising eggs, but did Dame think that was all they were good for?

"You seem troubled."

Potato snapped out of their thoughts. "Oh," they said, looking at the eevee who had entered the bedroom. "You're Dapple, right?"

The eevee nodded. "That I am," he said. "You seem troubled by something."

"It's not much," Sweet Potato said. "I'll be alright."

"But it's not nothing, is it?"

Potato sighed. "I'm just not sure what Dame thinks of me," they said. "I know we're friends, but… I dunno."

Dapple tilted his head. "This is her egg, correct?"

"Yeah, and that's the problem." Sweet Potato gently patted the shell. "It's her egg, not mine. I'm okay taking care of it, but isn't it weird that she's expecting me to?"

"It could be," he said. "It depends on how close of friends you are. Perhaps Dame thinks raising an egg is a communal experience. Doesn't it take a village?"

"But she didn't ask Loop de Loop," they said. "Or, Aether, Prez, and Snow Queen–I know she's friends with them, too. Or y'know, any of the other eevees."

Dapple's ears twitched. "Maybe you're special to her?"

Potato considered this. "Special how?"

"Do I need to tell you?"

Sweet Potato thought of how Dame purred when they were together, how happy she was, how she had come to them and no one else to raise her egg. Her child.

"What do you think?" Dapple asked.

They didn't get to tell him what they thought, because, at that very moment, the egg began to hatch.
