Warmth

Ever since Ember got into Daisy’s collection of starcandy, the little aircorn has been extremely hot to the touch. It’s almost like he’s running a fever, except that he’s been running around with the rest of his flock just fine, tiny bundle of fluff that he is. He’s smaller than the rest of them by a fair margin, so it’s almost like holding a little hot coal in her hands. That’s why Daisy had named him Ember in the first place - the warm flicker of life in her palms, the tiny feet and the itty bitty heartbeat.

If he’s bothered by this new state of affairs, he doesn’t show it, but Daisy keeps a close eye on him anyway, and enlists Geist and Ames to do the same. Together they determine that he’s eating a little more than usual, but doesn’t seem sick, and is playing fine. In fact, he’s a little more excitable than usual, considering he’s usually a bit more shy.

It all comes to a head one fine fall day when Daisy calls for him and he comes sprinting over on his little legs. She stoops down to scoop him up, and he burrows into her hands like the ball of fluff that he is. Then he starts to jitter and wiggle, and Daisy’s tail lashes in alarm. “What? What’s wrong?” she asks, but he only wiggles harder. She tries to let him go - maybe he doesn’t want to be held? But he stays firmly wiggling in her palms until, quite suddenly, his tail bursts into blue flame.

Daisy squeaks in surprise and nearly drops him in shock, but upon closer inspection, the flame doesn’t appear to be burning her. It’s just pleasantly hot on her palms. Ember wiggles a little more, his horn sparks, and then that too is ablaze.

“Oh!” Daisy chirps, startled, as finally his tiny feet catch as well. He doesn’t seem hurt--in fact, now that he’s on fire he seems a lot calmer than he has in days. She knows that sometimes magic works in mysterious ways, but wow. “My own little space heater, huh?”

Ember sighs contentedly, finally relaxing.
