It was on the third trip to the hospital that month that Ezra noticed him.

He sort of looked familiar, in the way someone in high school two years younger than you that you've never talked to looks familiar, in that Ezra could have either seen him around before or maybe had a dream with a face similar enough to his that his waking brain is trying to remember do we know this guy?

When Ezra was shuffling along with his IV bag, returning to his room after picking up the phone he'd left at the office from an annoyed coworker, the shouting had (quite easily) caught his attention. And then, there, in one of the staircases coming down from the floor above- a wheelchair, tipped over on its side, the wheels still spinning from leftover momentum- nurses with alternating expressions of annoyance and concern, checking up on-

Another patient, sprawled on the floor, laughter shaking his whole body.

Ezra stopped and stared, because really, what else was he going to do?

"...ird time," One of the nurses seemed to be scolding the young man. "You can't take wheelchairs down the stairs, head to the elevators-"

Gray eyes meet Ezra's red ones, and he sees only excitement, amusement- no pain or fear or even shame.

The next moment, Ezra jolts out of whatever place his mind had wandered off to, and hurries along down the hall- it's rude to stare, but he can't stop thinking about it later on.
