“It’s hot as fucking hell today,” complained Sabaku. “I’ve been walking in circles in the plaza this whole damn day, and no one has been buying anything! If it wasn't so damn hot then maybe someone would buy my wares,” Sabaku sighed. He turned to buy some food from a nearby vendor and sat down. As he pulled out his food, an elderly man made his way from person to person begging for scraps. “Oh. Wonderful. Another beggar. It’s not like we didn't have enough of those already.” The elderly man shuffled up to Sabaku, holding out withered hands that trembled with every breath. “Please, blessed child. Can you spare anything for me?” the man said in a raspy voice. Sabaku replied with a curt, “Sorry." The man paused. "What if I offer something in return for the rest of your food?” Sabaku looked down at the scraps of curry on his plate. “What do you have to offer?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “Some advice.” Sabaku, after searching for any pity in his heart towards the old geezer, relented and handed him the plate.  The old man wolfed it down and wiped his mouth. After clearing his throat for some 30 seconds, he said, "In the city's fields, counting the few petals that yield, a stranger or friend can become a  friend.” The man turned away to leave, but then a young girl with mismatched eyes ran into him. “Oh sorry!” She shouted back as she ran off with what appeared to be a turkey leg. Within seconds, a middle-aged vendor ran past, shouting at the girl. “You little scamp! Get back here!” Sabaku helped the old man back up and watched him hobble away. “Dumbass. Didn't anyone teach her to hide her face when stealing?” He got up and ran after the furious vendor and the strange girl with the multicolored eyes.
