It was a dark night in the middle of December, with holidays creeping right around the corner. Snow gently flaked from the sky, drifting down to the Earth. The frigid air stood still to let them fall, castigating the world in a feeling of tranquility.

Nicholas Mari sat faced out the door and head to the sky, the tracks beneath the boxcar's floor sending a vibration through his skin. He took a long inhale of the cigarette nested between his teeth, releasing between the gaps with his eyes closed. The boy was no older than 19, and yet his eyes shone with the insipidity of someone twice his age. 

Nicholas leans his weight against the wooden beam of the boxcar's frame, focusing his attention on the deep rumble of the wheels against the tracks. He takes another drag before stubbing out the cigarette, turning his body to face out the boxcar's door, suspended open by a single piece of plywood Nicholas had put in place. He flicks out the burnt-out cigarette butt, watching the butt fall away with the glowing ambers following.
