Mistletoe

Bullfrog yawned, stretching out next to the campfire Magda had made; the forest was quiet having gone dormant due to the cold weather; the lush greenery sprinkled with white; of course Magda was off looking for herbs with Whistlestop…. Bullfrog been sensible simply remained next to the fire, under orders to keep it under control and fed… that was easy… and it meant he didn’t have to do anything but keep warm and doze.. Perfect.

Ziathiel dangled listlessly from a branch of the tree she’d been practicing against….. Magic… she was trying to learn magic, but unlike most of Meiron’s dragon she was going to do one better… she was going to learn thunder magic, afterall a dragon that could draw the electricity to her, preventing any from striking the shift would be a step above the others… though she also couldn’t practice next to the cat.. Given his species weakness. Muttering she tried to concentrate on the rune magic she’d read about in one of Meiron’s her metallic claws gleaming in the winter light that filtered through the trees, as she thought of the rune, what it looked like, what it meant… and what she wanted it to do. “Dagaz.” she hissed, whiskers weaving as she thought of a burst of light….

Bullfrog started awake as a brilliant burst of light flared through the sleeping forest, the fire was flickering away as it should be, so it was something else…. Grumbling he started to close his eyes again, with the intent of going back to sleep; when something landed on him, hissing he spat at the intruder, before cursing, as he recognised the prone form; smoke rising from her metallic arms and snout… “Oh great.” He muttered, sitting up and contemplating the one creature he really had no intention of being in the same company ever again… maybe he could use his magic to trap her below some plant growth, surely her rider wouldn’t miss one little annoying dragon. Unfortunately the darkness where her eyes should be started to glow and tiny green slit blinked at him, focusing as the Ziathiel stirred.

It took Zia all of two moments to recognise the other dragon, his grumpy expression conveying everything he was too lazy to say. “Bullfrog.” She drawled, stretching as if she’d just been dozing and not been thrown through the forest by an exploding rune. “Go away.” He hissed, curling back up and turning his back to her. “But it's been ages since we’ve seen each other.” Zia purred, slipping closer to wind the irritable jungle dragon, out of the corner of her eyes she spotted a plant just above them, if she could have smiled she would, instead her eyes gleamed… oh this would be fun.

Bullfrog ignored her, easing further away, he could feel Magda coming closer so thankfully he wouldn’t have to deal with the wyrm … unless she wormed her way into helping Magda… maybe he could get Whistlestop to lick her again until he made his escape. He glared at Zia as she inched closer again, shifting a bit so she was never next to him… suddenly she waved a claw at him, and spat out a word. “Isa.” His body froze, rune magic…. Cursing silently he tried to break free, he couldn’t even summon his own hex magic to use against her.

Zia chuckled as the magic worked, freezing the jungle dragon in his tracks, she could hear the thumping footfalls of a large dragon and assumed it was Whistlestop…. Just a bit more.

Bullfrog felt the magic starting to ease as Zia slipped right next to him, and just as Whistlestop and Magda came around she pressed her muzzle to his, her whiskers gently caressing his snout as she kissed him. Horrified, Bullfrog tried to break free, but that just pressed him closer to the wyrm; finally she released him, raising a claw to her chest and purring. “I didn’t know you cared.” She said, pointing upwards; still immobile, Bullfrog followed that claw, spotting the clump of mistletoe directly above him; glaring, he narrowed his eyes, orange light starting to emanate from his body as the thunder magic finally faded. The wyrm though shouted another word and a bright light flared, halting his magic. With his original target gone, Bullfrog launched the jungle magic at the stupid plant above him, seething, he glared at Whistlestop who’d inched closer… when he found that wyrm….
