It was late afternoon. Some might even say early evening. The sun was slowly setting and heat gave way to freshness of the night. It was a perfect time for people to go out, take walks down to the beach, or to the town square to watch this evening's show. The gentle breeze blew through the streets, softly caressing trees and playing with leaves. The whisper of the leaves mixed in with the voices of town, people talking and laughing, a lone car or a bus here and there.

And there they were, sitting on the balcony, watching the people below, enjoyjng the warm summer breeze. She held a slurpy with both of her hands, while he was sitting on the chair, looking past her laughing at his own jokes while talking about whichever of his idiotic adventures with his friends, or important business deals or… She didn’t really listen. She stared at the plastic cup in her hands. The droplets of condensation slowly slid down the white and yellow side of her cup.
“Mhm” she nodded occasionally and looked him, but she was distracted. He couldn’t help but notice.
“Hey, are you alright?” he asked
“Mhm” she nodded again
“Are you sure?”
“Oh it’s nothing” she waved her hand
“Hm. Alright then” he said and looked at her for a moment
As they stood there silently, she kept getting more restless. She loooked at him and he smiled at her. She frowned slightly and he repeated:
“Are you sure you’re ok? You can tell me if something is wrong”
He looked at her reassuringly and she bit her lip. She looked at him, he looked back at her, and she couldn’t take it anymore
“I-It was me…”
“Hm?”
“It was me, I was the one who-”
She couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence. It was a sin too great to admit. She stared in his eyes and contemplated her next step. He reached for her hand and looked at her with concern in his eyes
"What is it, what did you do?”
He held her hand and gently stroked the back of her hand with his thumb. She sighed.
“I was the one who- what I mean is I-”
“Come on, you can tell me” he smiled at her, still holding her hand.
She knew there’s no turning back now. This is it, she couldn’t keep it in anymore. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and said:
“I ate the last bag of chips”
