Tribal Professions

Unlike in Furvilla, careers among the Tribe of Red Sands are known as professions. Otherwise, they are essentially the same.

Children too young to start a profession are taught weaving, as both an important life skill and as practice for the work and commitment of a future profession. By the time they are old enough to choose a profession, they're able to make basic things out of fibrous plants.

Explorers in the tribe wander outside their villages in search of materials to gather and forage.

Warriors venture out into the desert to battle against the monsters found in the Red Desert. They are also responsible for defending villagers during the Wandering; there must always be warriors among both halves of a village that has split in preparation for the Wandering. Traditionally, swords, tridents, and spears are the weapons of choice, though warriors with flails, maces, and axes can also be seen.

Tailors specialize in weaving; not only do they make clothing, but also use the same kind of fibers the kids practice with to create the doors, window blinds, and roofing materials that construction workers will then use in their work. Fibers, silks, and Dromedary Calf wool are their materials of choice.

Crafters are actually the ones who make the charms of water breathing; they create all kind of enchanted jewelry and tools for the villagers of their towns to use. Not only that, but they are taught the art of glassblowing, so that they can craft things out of the very desert sands themselves. For this reason, crafters and blacksmiths traditionally share a forge.

Blacksmiths create the armor and weapons for the warriors of their towns from materials that have been gathered from the desert as well as things that have been crafted in their villages. There is a particular giant crab monster with a black, red, and gold shell that is used specifically to create the signature shields and helmets of the warriors.

Alchemists create the various healing potions, morphing potions, breeding potions, and more to aid their fellow tribesmen in their day to day duties.

Herbalists grow a variety of desert plants; both for use in other careers, and for villagers to eat. While herbalists can't grow enough to support a town on their own, having their crop to supplement whatever explorers find from foraging is only wise.

Animal Husbandry is especially important, given that they raise the barn owls and Dromedary Calves used as messengers, mounts, and companions alike. They make sure all of their animals are safe and well cared for. Their pastures and stables are typically located in the center of town, closest to the oasis spring or springs, which is the safest location in the entire village.

It isn't until a child turns twelve years old that they choose a profession to train in, and become an apprentice to one of the villagers in that profession. This isn't permanent, and even if they decide on a career change long after they are no longer apprentices, there's no stigma and nothing stopping them from making the change. The only exception to this would be if there were no others in that profession left in town, which is only common sense.

Everyone knows how to at least defend themselves, even if they aren't warriors. Villagers who can only scream and run from danger wouldn't last long in the desert, and while it’s the warriors who are expertly trained in the art of battle, even a villager of a different career can defeat a weak monster on their own. It's the stronger, more deadly ones that lie deep within the desert wastes and underground caves that are the biggest threats; but then again, people aren't exactly going to be wandering that far out anyway. The only exception is if they get unlucky enough to stumble over one during a Wandering, but that's why there are always, always warriors with them.
