Chapter 1

like the wind disappearing after a rough storm, newt was gone. a blink and you miss it sort of moment. harley and newt were best friends since middle school, inseparable. newt always seemed to create walls throughout his life and harley was the very first to tear them down. harley had gotten so close to newt that before he could realize, he had fallen in love with his best friend. it took him way too long to muster his courage to confess, they were seniors in high school.

Harley ♡ @ 9:03pm

"hey, I have something to tell you tmrrw. where do you wanna meet up?"

Harley ♡ @ 9:18pm

"newt? you there?"

Harley ♡ @ 9:32pm

"?? having fun w/o me?"

Harley ♡ @ 10:24am

"ok you're starting to freak me out man"

Harley ♡ @ 10:46am

"you probably fell asleep early. see you tmrrw bro, sorry for bothering you"

harley had never received a reply, left on read even. when he arrived at school the next day to find out newt wasn't there either, anxiety set in. where had his best friend gone? why wasn't he reading his texts? newt had never left him on read for so long, it scared him. chilled him to his very bones. harley found out the real reason when he got home that day to find newt's mother crying at his family's kitchen table.

"he's gone! he wasn't in his room this morning when I went to wake him up. I-I don't know what happened. t-they said they found h-his c-crash this morning." newt's mother sobbed to harley's parents as harley walked in. a sudden crash sounded from the doorway, harley's backpack had been dropped to the floor.

"harley, sweetie! I'm so sorry." harley's mother exclaimed, surprised, as harley watched with wide eyes. his whole world came crashing down at that very moment. he wanted to cry and puke at the same time. what had he done to deserve such a terrifying punishment? right when his courage has reached it's breaking point, threatening to spill over like boiling water. his heart ached. it felt like a brick had landed square on the center of his heart.

the following hours had passed in a blur. harley had holed himself in his room, tears never stopping as they flooded his eyes. dark thoughts clouded his mind as he sat, watching the clock tick away on an endless loop. he wished time would stop, rewind itself, and go back to the previous day, but the clock kept moving, mocking him.

he hated that sound. hated its meaning. hated how it laughed in his face. and yet, he got used to it. let the sound flood his mind until he couldn't make out anything else.

his mind slipped into a state of fake calm as tears continued to flow. his head, rested lazily on a pillow, his breathing slowed. he was slipping into the welcoming arms of sleep.
