Characters:

Opal Jeanne, an artist in a rivalry with Zachary Seth

Zachary Seth, an artist in a rivalry with Opal Jeanne

Phyllis Smith, a birdwatcher and mutual friend of Opal Jeanne and Zachary Seth

Setting: fall on a university campus

(Opal Jeanne and Phyllis Smith are passing a pair of binoculars between themselves, looking out of a window into a building where Zachary Seth sits in front of an easel.)

OPAL: Do you see anything?

PHYLLIS: (Adjusting a pair of binoculars as she stares through them.) He’s just painting, doll. There’s nothing unusual about it.

OPAL: (Snapping her fingers and grabbing at the binoculars.) He’s painting dolls now? He’ll do anything to one-up me!

PHYLLIS: No, he’s still just painting a normal, regular canvas. The same sort of thing that you paint. A regular ol’ canvas, the kind you put paint on, the kind the Mona Lisa was painted on.

OPAL: (Zooms in using the binoculars.) He’s not painting a copy of the Mona Lisa, you liar. He’s not painting on dolls, either. It looks like a barn or something.

PHYLLIS: You’re really not listening, doll.

OPAL: What?

PHYLLIS: (Resting her chin on her hand as she watches Opal.) Nevermind. Say, do you want to run down to the convenience store later, grab some snacks, maybe we can have a movie night later?

OPAL: Oh, sure. We can get- hold on, he’s looking at his phone. Is he texting?

(Phyllis’ phone buzzes.)

OPAL: I can’t see who he’s texting.

PHYLLIS: (Checks her phone to see a text from Zachary, asking if she knows what Opal’s next art piece is going to be yet.) Wha..? Probably his boyfriend or something, I don’t know. Say, do you have any plans for your next big piece? Your next gallery submission, your next masterpiece, your next big hullabaloo?

(Opal removes the binoculars from her eyes just after Phyllis puts her phone away.)

OPAL: No, I don’t. That’s why we’re watching Zachary, dingus. (She laughs in a friendly way, indicating that she meant no harm by the insult.) I need to know what he plans to do before I can plan anything.

(Phyllis takes the binoculars back and returns to watching Zachary.)

PHYLLIS: He added some fire to the barn painting. What movie do you want to watch, ba- doll? We can watch a romance movie… Or a romantic comedy… Or we can binge Queer Eye, or something, I’ve never seen it.

(Opal seems to have not heard her.)

OPAL: I’m glad you’re on my side with this. Zachary’s going down with your help!

(Phyllis’ phone buzzes again.)

PHYLLIS: Yeah, uh, of course. I’m on your side.

(Her phone buzzes again, and she sighs.)
