It was a nice, warm summer day when I crossed the street towards the garage sale I’d heard about a few blocks down from my house. I didn’t expect them to have much, but I was very surprised when the old man who was running it had a Nintendo 64 cartridge for sale. But unlike a normal N64 cartridge, it had no art on it, just a label that said “bonnevali” in marker. I didn’t know what it was, but since it was only $1, I brought it home, smiling, wondering what the cartridge was.

I put the cartridge into my N64 and turned it on. What I saw on the television screen will haunt me for the rest of my days. There was a brown-furred creature with huge orange eyes and horrible long fangs, covered in long dark green hair like moss. Her giant fangs were sunk into Mario’s flesh and Mario was bleeding hyper realistic blood.

As a fan of Mario, I screamed and immediately turned off my N64. I wondered if there was something wrong with the cartridge. Surely no game released by Nintendo would include Mario dying in such a horrible fashion? I took the cartridge out and blowed on it to get the dust out, then, trembling, I turned it back on again. That was all just a graphical glitch and I was imagining things, wasn’t I?

But when I turned on the screen, Mario was still there. And he wasn’t the only one. All of my other favourite video game characters were there, lying in pools of blood. But the creature I saw wasn’t on the television screen anymore.

She was behind me.
