Tek hadn't wanted to compete. He wanted to stay in the fields with his herd of goats and live peacefully away from the rest of the Slate Mine estate. His trainer hadn't pushed him. Instead, the human had once again left Tek to his own devices, meaning that the only company Tek had was his goats. Which was fine, as they were intelligent creatures and could easily hold a conversation with the dog.

But they'd started to talk about being bored with how things were. That bothered Tek greatly. As a guarding dog, his job was to keep the herd not only safe, but happy. The thought of his herd being unhappy tore at Tek's very being. One evening he asked his herd what they wanted to do. Was there some way to ease their boredom?

The herd had seen the other collies compete in herding, and they wanted a part of the action. Tek would have to swallow his pride a little and get over his fear of competing. It made him incredibly nervous. He waited until his trainer came to check up on him a day or so later, and for the first time Tek approached the human. He hoped that this would get his message across, since the two of them couldn't exactly speak to each other. Much to his relief, it did, and as his trainer smiled down at him, Tek hoped that this would help his herd.
