intro to species

Koltherians (Kol-THirēəns) are the flagship variant of a race of highly advanced humanoids from the planet Aivos. These colourful creatures are collectively known across the variants as KOV. They are one of the most prevalent species in the Arvedis galaxy and are well known for their sheer size, extreme diversity, and unique biology compared to the other races that call Arvedis home. Through their primary governing body, the Aivos Interstellar Relations Organization (AIRO), Koltherians have formed strong connections to the other races in the galaxy, and continue to reach out towards the stars for new alliances.

Being one of the oldest races in the galaxy, if not the very first to be created, it's to be expected that Kovs have a rich culture with a long history that continues to develop as time goes on...

forms

One of the Koltherian species most unique biological traits is their ability to shape-shift between a couple of different forms. Naturally, they appear as large humanoids with brightly colored skin, long ears, and a tail- however, all members of the species are capable of changing between two to four different shapes depending on what type of Koltherian they are!

Generally, Koltherians have three forms (see the image above): The natural humanoid form or true form, the feral form - often called the “battle form”, and a transitional "half-form" in-between the true and battle forms.

The three forms vary greatly in anatomy, with the humanoid and half forms being bi-pedal and the feral form being explicitly quadrupedal. However, you may notice that between all three of these forms that the ears and tail are always present, and both the colors and markings on the skin stay consistent between each form. However, there are other types of Koltherians who can take on other forms that vary from these...

Kov Species

As we know, there are currently seven different types or variants within KCOMM, each one with its own unique origin. To make this simple, Koltherian types or the various Kov Species are classified under one of two current categories.

Firstly, you have the Primary Line, which consists of Kovenite, Koltherite, and Standard Koltherians. This is what's considered the "main structure" for Koltherian evolution over time- starting with the Kovenite and going towards the Standard Koltherians.

Next is the Augment Line, which is made up of Leviathan Koltherians, Sphinx Koltherians, Kite Koltherians, and Koltuks. These types of Koltherians are a direct result of genetic tampering through AIRO, and have become an established subspecies all on their own.

It is unknown just how far Koltherians are capable of pushing their physiology and their biology, but recent advancements in genetic enhancements (often abbreviated as GEAs) have allowed for some pretty fantastic enhancements to the body. Koltherians have always been proud of their appearance, and today’s tech allows folks to feel the most comfortable in their own skin without too much risk to personal health.

wings

Koltherians are almost all capable of flight across the types. As a species that developed the ability to shape shift to suit their environment, wings were incredibly useful. They allowed for long distance travel, aerial advantage in combat, and it would be unfair to say that early on the Kovenite weren't fond of them in general.

Kov wings have three to five fingers and a thumb. The thumb is usually fairly short but still mobile enough to grapple. It is not unheard of to see a modern Kov with a longer than average wing thumb though! This is not any sort of special trait.

On average, the wing membrane often extends from the shoulder down past the hindquarters to anywhere between one and three head lengths down the tail. However, Leviathans often have shorter wing membranes that do not extend much past their hips. Adversely, Kites may have wing membranes that extend to as far as halfway down the tail.

Origin of the Koltherian Species

Kovenite are the oldest living beings in the galaxy and the starting point for the entire Kov species. Native to their homeworld of Revaltan, the species was forced to flee in small ark ships at the end of an alien invasion that nearly wiped them out. The surviving members of the species escaped their world and set off into space- and although only some managed to land on any planet's surface, there were a few lucky groups who managed to find their next home: Aivos.

Although the first Kovenite were created around four billion years ago, the species itself didn't establish until around the two-billion mark. From there, they existed for another 1.9 billion years before fleeing their homeworld.

The origin of the Koltherians and the Kov variants as we know them today: Kovenite as a species have almost entirely disappeared, with most of them being destroyed during the invasion of their homeland that forced them to flee. Many of the escaping ships were lost to space, and only a small handful of them winding up on either Aivos... so in the current date, they are quite rare compared to the rest of the Kov species. Much of what you'll hear about Kovenite comes from discussion among members of the Old Faith, but you could go your entire life without ever meeting one yourself.

Koltherite were the in-between phase in the rapid evolution of the Kovenite into the modern Koltherians. These were the children of Kovenites who had begun to adapt to the Spacer Arks as well as Aivos's new biomes and atmosphere. While some genetic modification early on was definitely instrumental in this rapid change within the population, the technology has since been lost to time. Koltherites are far more prevalent than Kovenites, and are for the most part the only remaining indication that there was ever any sort of species beyond the Koltherians. These folks are also often the ones with the old stories! Koltherites are still around and kicking today though, and there's still even some new ones being born into the world as well!

Koltherians are the dominant life forms on Aivos and the most common Kov. These highly adaptive, shape-shifting peoples are incredibly developed, sophisticaated, and advanced. While perhaps not the same tier of space-ready, as say; the Kovenite, Koltherians are capable of quite the fantastic array of arts, crafts, and tech. Koltherians enjoy a rich and advanced lifestyle and can choose to be connected to the global database and linknet via mobile phones, implants, and holo-projections or maybe they want to be more in-control of their devices!
Computers, electric cars, hoverboards, you think it, they've probably got it.

Some Koltherians are even capable of having a fourth form! This is not a free trait however, as generally this stems from specific lineages and genetic tampering.

Leviathans are the warmachines of AIRO. These burly Kov are mostly a part of a government supersoldier project that outfits AIRO's space fleets and ground armies with strong, capable soldiers. They are much bigger than Koltherians, sometimes even rivalling Koltherites. They have broad bodies with thick shoulders and necks and generally do not have much length to them. Leviathans generally have smaller wings that are incapable of aerial acrobatics or flight for an extended time. The Leviathan Project is where the false wing trait came from as well - so it's not all that uncommon to see Leviathans sporting false wings! Since the establishment of this project though, Leviathans have become more of a norm around the world. They're a pretty popular choice for construction jobs, security detail, logging... basically anything that requires heavy lifting or a big sturdy presence.

Sphinxes were not widely accepted across Aivos when they first became public knowledge. Another of AIRO's soldier projects, sphinxes were developed for space missions specifically. These Kov were spliced with the space faring Tetamni to create a Kov with thick skin, the ability to seal off their bodies and regulate internal pressure and support an organ unique to the aliens that was functionally a rebreather. Anatomically, Sphinxes are considered to be very upsetting Kovs. But they're starting to get a better rep with the introduction of some community projects.

Although you may see Sphinxes out and about in any city or town across Aivos today, it's still most common for these Kov to stick close to AIRO or its ex-employees. Their unique anatomy can make casual lives difficult, and many find that working within specialised tasks tends to provide the best quality of life.

Koltuks are considered a modern genetic miracle. These Koltherians were initially a part of a passion project to introduce new genes and traits into the general population and boy was it a success. Koltuks initially were lab-grown and were marketed as more or less a 'designer baby'. Now, families could send in their profiles and have Koltuks made to be genuine biological offspring through lab process, and many did. Others simply purchased project runoff which was generally the cheaper option. These variants have become very popular though, as their soft fur is still a very new concept among Koltherians. Koltuks can be recognised by their partially furred bodies, whiskers, and sturdy horns visible across all forms.

Many models and influencers of modern Aivos are Koltuks! People love 'em!

Kites were developed in a similar fashion to Koltuks. As a passion project to bring new life into the Kov gene pool and new traits to the forefront of the modern aesthetic, this one was not received with the same sort of success as its predecessor. Kites do not possess the typical sixth set of limbs that all other Kov species do. Their wings are a mix of standard front limb and wing, with two to three digits making up the length of the wing. The rest are capable of supporting weight and some basic movement beyond the usual thumb. In their half and true forms, Kites are incapable of forming wings. Their bodyplan simply does not allow for that sixth set of limbs. Kite arms are longer than average, often sitting between slightly longer than average say mid-thigh at rest standing, all the way to some reaching past the knees. They also are unfortunately limited to four fingers versus the typical five. This can make finding clothing like gloves or shirts with appropriate sleeves difficult.

Some Kites more recently have been seen able to drop the wing membrane from their arms though while in battle form. It is unknown what causes this and seems to be completely random. It's said that you can go in to AIRO and have a test run to see if that's something you're capable if you're a Kite -- although due to the nature of shapeshifting, if it's not discovered at a young age, the likelihood of one being able to actually shift that limb is very low. Perhaps with the development of GEAs Kites may be able to move around more freely without dragging their wing membranes around!
