Creating a Character

Normal.pngIntroduction

If you feel inspired by this world and/or want to make your own characters for a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon world, you are free to join in! It is open to anyone to submit characters for. The main purpose of this world is to give the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon world even more depth to it but also some changes.

Need help deciding on a Pokemon? You can start with Serebii's Pokedex and sort by type or generation.

Normal.pngDesign Rules

There are two versions of this world. One where the Pokemon designs are closer to canon with only mild changes like new or removed markings, slight change in shape, etc. Closest to the actual Pokemon Mystery Dungeon universe.

There is also the world where they are anthro and there is a lot more freedom of design with how they appear. There are very few limits, and you can design it however you want.

The first version is the default, canon world. But if you want to make your design anthro and/or less derived from official Pokemon designs, it can exist in the latter world. Your character can exist in both versions, if it has two different designs. For example, my Arcanine is feral and looks close to official design, aside from adjusted markings, eyecolor, and an accessory. In the anthro world, he is obviously, anthro, with more changes and freedom to the design.

Normal.pngMaking a Moveset

When choosing a moveset, try not to think of competitive use, and rather more for thematic purposes and working for roleplay and story situations or based on Anime logic. For example, lets say you are making a Garchomp character. Using the moves Dig and Earthquake for example - Earthquake is a stronger move and is used in competitive and ingame pokemon battles more than Dig and seems like a first choice. However, in a visual and roleplay sense, it is sort of unrealistic. To use a move like this would be actually hard to control and would be destructive. HOWEVER, the move Dig would be easier to control and could have uses outside of battling, like getting out of situations within a story and have some use within roleplay. Ignore the value of moves in a competitive gameplay way and think of how they would work visually or story wise or how they may be used in the anime. Hyper beam isn’t used ingame battles, but its super cool in the Anime and would still be very useful in a roleplay.

An interesting moveset for Garchomp could be:

  • Dig(interesting visually and has out of battle use)
  • Dragon Claw(while more "basic" visually, makes for a good default attack)
  • Crunch(gives more type coverage and adds diversity in usage)
  • Sand Attack(could be useful within conflicts more than ingame. think of it used in the anime)

Another moveset for inspiration, but this time, Espeon:

  • Psybeam(visually more interesting than psychic or confusion)
  • Quick Attack(a physical move that could be useful in a pinch)
  • Light Screen(extremely useful in many roleplay situations)
  • Toxic(maybe says something about the character's personality...)

You have the traditional four move slots, but you can also have additional moves. You may use secondary moves in specific situations or during specific conditions, but you may have some drawbacks or specific requirements to make it more fair. Maybe your main moveset doesn't have the move Thunder, but you can have it as a secondary move, saying you can only use it during specific weather conditions and if you are at high health.

Don’t worry about special or physical moves as well! Special or Physical moves don't have to matter either. If your Pokemon has extremely low Attack, you can still give them Physical moves without worry.

Moves should known by the Pokemon ingame, across all generations/games but there are allowances! In the context of this world, Pokemon know certain moves because it makes sense due to their typing or physical capabilities. So even if a Pokemon cannot learn a move in-game but it fits their design, thats fine. But it would be frowned upon to give, say, Ice Beam to a normal Charizard. But if you REALLY wanted to, maybe your Charizard is an Alpine - Montane subspecies that has blue, weaker fire, and it's subspecies evolved to work more with Ice type moves. You can break the rules if you really want to!!

Normal.pngNature & Abilities

Natures in Pokemon have a purpose when it comes to competitive battling. But please rememeber this world doesn't go by competitive battling rules. Nature has nothing to do with your character's actual strengths, it's just personality and for fun. You can see a list of Natures here.

For Abilities, try to go with one that would make the most sense in a roleplay / semi realistic setting. If you want, you can get creative and make your own. It also doesn't have to be locked to your Pokemon's actual available abilities, as long as it feels fitting. You can give some sort of background why a Pokemon may have a certain unique ability if you want. Maybe your Pokemon has Speed Boost because their parent did even if your Pokemon normally does not, for example!!
