Notes

  • Oribus is essentially the most powerful human/non-god entity in my character world's canon.
  • He is immortal, and does not age. His true age is unknown, and with magic he can appear anyway he wants to. He chooses to appear as a young man mainly because it's the way he looked when he discovered immortality... it's a safe place to go back to.
Personality

Oribus is a wise man with an understanding of much around him. Highly observant- there really isn't much that catches him off guard or startles him, and he can read others quite well. Not much phases him, and he's almost always calm under pressure, setting a high standard for his mages. Though many see him as aloof, mysterious and solemn, he does have a great sense of humor and isn't afraid to smile, either. He tends to be a bit of a workaholic, and spends a great deal of his time researching and studying. He can rarely be found relaxing or procrastinating in any way. He is a bit reclusive, and because of the nature of his work he often hides precisely what he's working for or doing at any time. He tends to dedicate his time to researching topics for the goddess and studying to make himself stronger for her sake. What exactly she has him research- he won't be sharing anytime soon.

He doesn't actively train all of the new mage recruits, though he may pop in on lessons and speak to them at  times, the only one he dedicates a great deal amount of time to training himself is Eslore, and on occasion- the other high mages if he feels they need a lesson taught. He is a dedicated and loving father, and will always drop work for his son in an instant if he needs to. Eslore is his entire world, and he loves his son dearly. Eslore is his personal apprentice, and though his son can be lazy and rather fearful of advancing and possibly endangering himself- he is proud of his son all  the same. He too is aware of the possible dangers his son faces in advancing, the threat of a spell gone wrong, magic used for the wrong  reasons..but he has faith in his son and his abilities.

His magic use is rather limited, despite his power. He avoids using it unless necessary as he feels that to use it to flaunt or be lazy is disrespectful, especially upon learning the source of magic. One of the things he did learn from Serafina, was where the magic utilized by mortal mages came from- namely, Serafina herself. Her excess power and the leylines formed in creation. Out of honor to his goddess, (and because of personal preference) he avoids wasting his magic. That's not to say he imposes this on others- he knows that would be silly, and others need the practice much more than he, he just keeps it as a personal view. He has also seen the massive destruction magic can cause, and at times (despite his control of it) it often frightens even him away from using it recklessly. This does, however, stir up worries among his mages that he's lost his touch, forgotten how to use magic, losing his power with age- but this is simply not true. In fact, with Serafina's help he is only growing more and more powerful as a sorcerer.

He is accused often of having little personality, being boring, a stick in the mud- but this isn't quite true either. He doesn't mind a good time, doesn't mind company, and loves exciting new things, but at his age- there's just not that much that is new to him. When exposed to something that is new and fascinating, he gains a childlike excitement and is happy to pick it apart and learn all about it. No more is this true than with his son- who seems to be constantly teaching his father new things. It's one of the reason he adores him so much. He comes across as bland and intimidating only when he's lost in thought, working, and focused. This just happens to be a majority of the time how he appears to outsiders.

Because of his own son, he can also come across as a fatherly figure to others, and has a soft spot for children and people struggling with something. He will easily interrupt his own  plans to help someone with something giving them trouble.

----------------------

As time has gone on, and he's become an ancient immortal, he continues to be enamored with his work and solving any problem given to him. While he never becomes a full god on his own- he lacks the ability to create or manipulate his own body in the same way as gods do- many angels begin to arbitrarily refer to him as the god of puzzles, as any problem they give him he can probably solve- given enough time.

Time becomes a blur, it's all just a passing wind in his journey to simply answer whatever is posed to him.

Trivia

  • Oribus is the only being other than the first gods to be able to pull magic directly from the void. It's unclear how exactly he achieved this or learned to do this, but this is why Serafina was quick to jump on the opportunity to maintain his favor and enlist his aide- through his dedication and studies he has become something more than human, something new and unknown to the gods prior. Just as much as he is studying on her behalf, she is studying him.
  • He and the gods are largely friends, though he wouldn't ever call them friends....as he still maintains an extremely high level of respect for them for...well, obvious reasons. Technically he could probably overpower some of them, but its a matter of principle.
  • He handed over the Mage's school to his son in his stead after the great war, and then "vanished" (As far as the normal folk know). In reality, he retreated to the celestial library with the permission/guidance of Serafina to work on research and scholarly pursuit for eternity on the behalf of the gods. He remains there now, but does visit the mortal realm on occasion, especially when the school of mages is rebuilt/reinvented as the alchemist's academy by the god of kings and goddess of wills, accepting their chosen head of magic Sieu as his student and pupil. He teaches him much of the magical world before returning to the library again.
History

Oribus was born a normal human, of course, son of a librarian and a doctor. Growing up in Ipus, during his youth mages were sparse mysterious outsiders- frightening most people with their power with no real organization to speak of. It wasn't until his teen years that the Mages school and the circle of mages was founded, gathering them together to train safely and invite new recruits into their ranks. He joined in the pursuit of knowledge-something he'd always enjoyed, and from there excelled. By the time he rose to power and perfected his art, the high mages had been established and were looking for an archmage to take place at the head. He didn't volunteer for this duty- but was pushed by his instructors and after many trials given by the high mages, proved himself more than worthy to become such.

Archmage of the Mage's school of Ipus, and  the most powerful sorcerer whom has ever lived. Don't let that fool  you- he's got a great sense of humor, is incredibly kind and patient,  and loves sharing his knowledge with others. He was born a normal human of course, and took to magic easily in youth. Progressing his knowledge through determination, hard study and practice, he soon rose through the  ranks to excel and even master a previously-uncontrollably magical art, that of the Chaos and Void, previously only usable by the gods  themselves. With his wisdom, he soon became the head of the mages circle  and a force to be reckoned with. No one is sure how old he is, with magic use- he doesn't seem to age.

He was married in the past, and was  excited to soon expect a child with his beloved. But due to  complications, she didn't survive the birth and the child nearly  perished as well. However, distraught and terrified of losing the one  thing he dedicated his heart to- he used all of his power to drag  Serafina, the goddess of creation and love, from her slumber. Begging the goddess to save his son. No matter what it cost- no matter the price, save the one piece of family he had left.

Serafina was touched by his plight, and saw a possibility of making an extremely valuable ally..and more importantly- preventing a worse enemy. She agreed,in exchange the archmage would serve her, working at her command. His son was saved, and the Ipus mages were formally bound to the goddess, learning magic under  her input. Though, only Oribus and his son, Eslore, work directly under Serafina herself.

Despite being a 'servant' to the goddess, they are actually quite decent friends. She teaches him much and they work together often on things. Its rare for her to actually ask or  demand anything of him, and she does much more to help him than he does for her. She offers advice, answers questions he has, and grants good luck to his mages so their spells will be less dangerous in the event of a failure.
