Profile
A troubled young spinx living in Catalis. Darius has never been particularly well behaved and was recently cursed for it, and he's struggling to deal with the emotional fallout. His curse worsens with his troublemaking and, terrified it'll remain that way - or, gods forbid, he'll be cursed again - he's desperately trying to learn to be kinder and cause less mischief. It's going... well, it sure is going.
Darius works in Catalis on the camera crew and as setup coordinator for a fashion company - Urban Fabrics Co. - producing TV and Magitube shows, and spends his nights hanging out with friends and going to events in the busy city. He's become close with another spinx, Harley, who runs a bakery a neighborhood over and can often be found upstairs in the evenings, watching shows or playing video games with them. Besides ripping apart fashion choices and spilling the tea on the casts in his shows, Darius is a big wrestling fan, and offline enjoys model kits and dismantling magitronics.
Darius comes from a religious backwater farming town, and dipped as soon as he was old enough to be self sufficient - the atmosphere never sat right with him. Living in Catalis has been extremely freeing for him, but especially now that he's cursed, he's still trying to reconcile the deep-seated remnants of his upbringing. He can't help but feel like every stranger on the street sees his curse as a moral failing, and his usual iron confidence is floundering. He's taken to wearing a jacket anytime he leaves the house (fashionable, sure, but he by far prefers less clothing) and has to try very hard to suppress his panic anytime the smoke flares up.
To his detriment, Darius is not the kindest cat in the world; he grew up feeling the need to speak his mind and stand up for himself and is quite abrasive and blunt. He's easily riled up and his temper has gotten him in many a fight - leading to his cursing when he set a particularly entitled designer's work on fire - and is often the cause of his smoke flaring up in public. At the very least, though, this means he's a very genuine (if tactless) cat and will go to bat for his friends with zero hesitation. He tends to be extremely intense no matter what he's up to and is actually kind of a fun guy, if you can get past the pettiness.
Social Connections
Harley - recent new bestie. They have similar weird oppressive-but-selectively-supportive backgrounds and Harley is sneakily trying to teach Darius that his curse is okay
Kira - punk bros. he's unironically a fan of her music and sometimes films her shows. jokingly "in kira's gang"
August - surprisingly, friends. as coordinator he often contracts August to put together floral arrangement for show sets (and sometimes as prizes or handouts). admires him a lot but he'd never admit it
Ersie - familiar faces. Darius often works with her and her firm to get show sets put together whenever they're working out and about (and on occasion in the studio).
Levi - co-worker and designer at Urban Fabrics. he's quite important and so, while not in any direct management chain from Darius, Levi doesn't pay him a lot of attention besides to boss him around.
Laika - co-worker stylist at Urban Fabrics. their paths don't cross much but they'd recognize each other on the street.
Species - Spinxyn
Spinx are a terribly mischievous type of sphinx native to Nephfei with a deep love for pranks and fashion. They are magicless, unlike the other species of their world - legend has it they pranked the gods and were punished - and thus are very magically malleable. Because of this, spinx can be cursed or gifted with magic and it affects their bodies drastically.
Spinxyn are identifiable by their heart-shaped faces, sloped banana ribcage, and innate desire to cause problems on purpose.
World Context || Nephfei group <3
A modern fantasy world governed by magical gods, Nephfei is home to four sentient species - harpips, centicorns, merphins, and spinxyn. They live together in relative peace aside from some cultural clashes between locales of differing ideologies. The world has been imbued with magic, in all four species and in the earth itself, but spinxyn have none of their own; revoked by the gods, so they say, as an ancient punishment. With tangible deities, Nephfeism is a prevalent religion amongst the inhabitants, and some religious spinxyn see their situation as deserved punishment, while others deny the gods entirely and rally against this unfair treatment.
Nephfei has a good amount of modern-day technology, though its electricity is replaced by magic. Lighting, household appliances, television, games, and the internet at large all exist with relative similarity to the real world. Despite the societal advancements, though, a significant amount of the world's history and inner workings remain shrouded in mystery and magical secrets...

Darius is a grouchy piece of work, but he can get pretty rowdy when he's having a good time with friends. He can be a bit of a drama queen and is rather petty. Now that he's been cursed, he gets anxious and twitchy really easily when he thinks his secret might be in jeopardy.
