Profile

Physical Appearance

  • Long dirty-blond/light brown hair partially tied into a ponytail that trails to his hips, with his right bangs being slightly longer
  • Purple eyes that have no pupils
  • Fair skinned on the somewhat pale side
  • Somewhat short in height
  • Green vine-like tail with a red and orange flower growing at the tip, which has a mind of its own
  • Gray mushroom growing on left shoulder
  • Vines growing from head that is partially woven through hair/ponytail and partially around his right arm, which is also fused to his hand
  • Vine near face has a small purple bell-shaped flower sprouting from it
  • Various markings on skin that change from time to time, although the ones on his face, tail and right arm always remain the same
    • The markings on the rest of his body are in Lord Dalia's original language and are prophecies that magically brand themselves into his skin
    • They change from time to time, although it is a very painful process

Clothing Style

Torenn's outfit is rather simple and rather asymmetrical to accommodate for the symbiotic plants/fungi growing on him. Since he is also blind, he can't really tell what he's wearing well, so he usually wears the same outfit all the time for simplicity's sake. He wears a rather stitched up pair of jeans (which has been torn from fights and also the plants from his body from time to time) and a black single shoulder tank top that fastened on his left side and is longer on the right side than the left. Across his chest and left arm he wears bandages to cover the markings on his skin, which sometimes contain sensitive information dealing with Dalian prophecies. The bandages end around his midriff and go up to his neck, but they do not cover his right arm. He tends to not notice when he forgets to cover the area around his waist, but those words never tend to be important anyway so he doesn't worry about it much. Around his neck and across his chest is a leather choker/belt, and around his arm is a leather armband along with a fingerless glove on his left hand. He usually wears four silver ear cuffs on each ear, and he relies on his plants to manage his hair for him.

Personality

Torenn is a seemingly deadpan and emotionless half-dryad who exists symbiotically with the plant and fungal growths connected to him. Since he was born blind, he has little sense of how to emote to others and doesn't have any sense of conveying feeling through facial expressions, although he does occasionally do so since expressions are innate (meaning he only emotes in response to his own emotions and rarely in response to others). However he is anything but emotionless, although he does tend to be very reserved and professional most of the time just due to his personality. He's usually very mellow and calm, but he's focused and responsible about his work and will not take any opportunity to slack off. Torenn only has rare moments of visible emotion when he seldom loses his temper or someone manages to make him laugh with their stupidity. He doesn't have that much of a sense of humor in general, so it is rare to see him smile or laugh, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's rarely happy.

As a Dryla he tends to take time to be still and take in his surroundings, usually sitting on the roof of his workplace to photosynthesize during breaks. His symbiotic plants on his body release pollen/spores into the air in a layer so thin that most people can't even notice it, even if they're breathing it in. The dust is harmless, but it allows Torenn to use his Arbyr rifting to detect everywhere it lands or touches something. This lets him "see" outlines of his surroundings in mostly high detail. It's a bit difficult to use during windy conditions, but he lives in Xyarok, which has no wind, so it's not a problem. This is the reason he is able to make "eye contact" with most people he encounters, although it's just him looking toward a person's face area. Even without his spores, he's very skilled at reading the sounds around him with echolocation and he makes a point to remember the heights and builds of all the regulars so he doesn't always need to resort to his rifting to properly address them. On the rare occasions where he cannot get a handle of his surroundings, such as when it's very windy or his rifting is disabled, along with the environment being very loud, crowded, and constantly moving, he can get rather skittish.

Torenn is a very dedicated and mature young man that does his job well, and he has the utmost respect for his employer and father-figure, De Jack Zilvas. Any disrespect to Jack will earn you a beating and get you pitched out of the establishment before you can finish your sentence. Torenn is highly skilled in hand to hand combat, and neither his blindness nor his relatively small frame keep him from laying down the law in the workplace. Many regulars at the establishment are very fond of Torenn, although he hasn't the slightest why, and he has a rather large army of aggressive customers that will also jump to his aid should he be slighted in any way, whether Torenn wants them to or not.

Abilities

  • Arbyr rifting - rank 4/5
  • Poyson rifting - rank 3/5
  • Symbiotic plants/fungi growing on his body can react to danger even when he can't

Strengths

  • Heightened senses to compensate for lack of normal vision, and can "see" using his rifting along with spreading spores around the area
  • Flexible, agile, has quick reflexes, and is surprisingly strong for his size
  • Responsible, level headed, and not easily surprised or thrown off
  • Confident, unabashed, and doesn't take crap from anyone

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable in places where his spores cannot rest or if his rifting is negated/disabled
  • Although very strong and quick, he is rather small and easy to overpower
  • The prophetic markings on his body change unpredictably and are extremely painful while doing so
  • Sensitive to unclean air, weakens without regular sunlight, and falls ill if his plants/fungi suffer

Backstory

Torenn is not certain who exactly his parents are or which of them was the Ela and which was the Dryla. Regardless, he grew up in the forests of Arboraka with the other Dryla looking after him. He was born blind, so he quickly learned to use his rifting to help navigate the forest and learn echolocation. His blindness didn't seem to hinder him much in the forest, and he lived there having a low key and simple life until he was about 10 years old. Without explanation, markings began to form on his skin, causing him unbearable pain. The Dryla were perplexed about what the markings meant or what the cause was. Later that month, they contacted De Jack Zilvas for help, and he came to the forest and informed them the markings were prophecies of Lord Dalia, although the reason they were forming on his skin were currently unknown since Lord Dalia oddly enough didn't seem to be the source of them. Jack also said that the Enlightened had become aware of the strange magical activity coming from the region and were planning to investigate soon. Knowing Torenn would be in grave danger, Jack offered to take him to Emdrica for his own safety. The Dryla accepted the offer, and Torenn then moved there and lived with Jack.

Torenn slowly adjusted to the modern setting, although the crowded city and lesser amount of vegetation made it difficult for him to feel comfortable and at ease with his surroundings. Jack decided a different location would better suit Torenn's needs, and after introducing him to Mordekai Wales the two brought Torenn to That-One-Town, Xyarok. Although in the Demon's Realm, none of the inhabitants were fond of the Enlightened and were sure to drive off any of them that found their way to town. Mordekai watched over Torenn for the first few months until he was able to adjust. He was much more comfortable in this town due to the vast surrounding forests and the lack of wind to disrupt his spores. Torenn ended up working at a restaurant called Wallet Wraps to help him adjust more to modern society and become familiar with the townsfolk. A few years later though, a questionable accident left the previous owner dead, so Torenn reluctantly took up handling the establishment. A handful of regulars also ended up volunteering to handle other aspects of the restaurant such as finances and stocking, and after a while Torenn settled on becoming the bartender while other regulars became employees as well.

Torenn still works as a bartender and the overseer of Wallet Wraps, keeping order and kicking out rowdy patrons when needed. The regulars are very fond of him, and despite the fact he's never had a sip of alcohol in his life he makes very popular drinks using various herbs and plants that he grows around the restaurant. Throughout the years he's had to deal with regular raids from both the Enlightened and agents of the Demriles/Shana and attempts to kidnap him for the prophecies on his skin. They continue to appear on his skin to this day, often detailing events involving Lord Dalia and the fate of his people, which could easily be used to their enemies' advantage. The townsfolk have been rather loyal to him and are viciously protective of their favorite bartender.

Trivia:

  • Torenn was named after a character named "Torren" from a book called The People of Sparks; they have nothing in common really but I liked the name and just changed up the spelling slightly.
  • The previous owner of Wallet Wraps apparently was "mysteriously blown up." Torenn has no idea what actually happened or if it did happen. It's not like he could see anything.
  • He dislikes wind since it tends to disrupt his spores and affects how they rest on the surfaces around him, which makes it more difficult for him to "see." Jack figured That-One-Town would be a good place for him since there is no wind there.
    • Apparently the legend goes that Jevix Xyarok just stopped wind from happening in Xyarok because Aru Vetrian complained her hair was getting messed up by it. So he decreed there would be no wind in his region to ruin her hair. No one is sure if that's exactly what happened, but it is true that wind does not exist in Xyarok.
  • Although there's not a lot of sunlight in Xyarok, Torenn enjoys sunbathing and will usually sit out on the roof of Wallet Wraps to catch as much sun as possible on the rare sunny days.
  • He is also fond of humid days, since they seem to make the fungi growing on him "happy."
  • Torenn has singlehandedly put a stop to littering in That-One-Town on the sheer basis that he will kick your ass if he catches you doing so.
  • Highly sensitive to anything damaging to his symbiotic plants/fungi, meaning he is rather sensitive to environmental changes and anything toxic in the air or the environment around him.
  • Terrified of fire. He was burned rather badly once before, so the presence of it makes him uneasy.
  • His tail flytrap eats various bugs; Torenn can eat and digest food normally, but he prefers to photosynthesize. He also has to regularly find things for the fungi on him to decompose, so sometimes you might just find him lying in a pile of dead leaves or the like.
  • He has several relatives back home in Arkabor, although none of them are actually sure how he is related to them. They just assume he's the same kind of Dryla as them even though they don't know specifically who is his Dryla parent.
    • Some of them are mobile Dryla, but many of them are immobile and are stuck in the ground just like any other plant in the forest.
  • Probably the worst prophecy he's experienced appearing on his skin is the prophecy of the Dead Prince, which appeared across his back and took up a huge space.
    • The really bad prophecies are painful enough for him to faint or go unresponsive from the shock.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "A Dryla connected to the prophecies of the Creator through his flesh, he is not one to be trifled with despite his blindness."
