  • Light purple skin
  • Dark magenta tattoos across left eye, on right shoulder, around navel, and around both ankles
  • Scratch scars across right cheek, left arm, and right thigh
  • Medium in height (although fairly short for a dark elf), 5'6"
  • Physically fit with a delicate, slender, somewhat feminine build
  • Pierced right ear
  • Navel piercing, only on the right side

Clothing Style

Arlyth dresses in typical dark elf style clothing, usually combining light armor pieces with simple cloth accessories. He prefers to wear less clothing to not feel restricted, and he absolutely hates shoes. He tends to wear when out and about a simple armor chest piece and a reinforced cloak with shoulder guards, and underneath he wears a sleeveless cropped black top. The end of the cloak has a large black magic infused stone clasped near the end in a loop of cloth. He also wears a pair of black shorts with light armor guards on his hips under a cloth skirt with black sashes. The only accessory he wears is a silver crescent moon earring and some black leather anklets. Similarly to the forest elf tradition, Arlyth also wears a mask when addressing non-elves. His mask is dark purple/nearly black with purple markings. He does not remove this mask unless he is alone with his companions and in a safe location.

Personality

Arlyth can be described as one with a very unsettling demeanor, and he comes off as rather eerie and leering toward others. He almost always has a smile/smirk on his face, and he's probably plotting your downfall or just something nasty in general to happen to you once you meet him. He likes to stay a few steps ahead of others, and he has a very cunning and resourceful mind. Despite liking to plan to keep ahead, he doesn't take unforeseen complications poorly in most instances and tends to keep a cool head about most situations unless someone specifically does something to make him angry. This prince of the dark elves has a very arrogant and condescending air about him, and he tends to speak in a rather dismissive or patronizing tone toward others he doesn't see as equals. He can be particularly elitist toward most people who aren't dark elves, although he's slightly less rude/hostile toward other elves in general (although it really depends on the individual). When he finds people he can genuinely respect, his condescending manner of speech tends to mellow down to simply being teasing. He's a rather cynical and sarcastic person, although he always seems to keep an eerily cheery demeanor when his temper is under control. Arlyth thoroughly enjoys making others feel uneasy or uncomfortable, and he loves seeing others' reactions to being put outside their comfort zone.

Reaching Arlyth on a very personal level is rather difficult, since he doesn't want to give anyone the advantage of knowing him intimately or knowing his vulnerabilities. He tends to dance around personal questions or prod at the one asking instead. Due to the extermination of almost all of his kind, Arlyth doesn't particularly feel there's anyone he can really trust anymore. Judging by how fondly he speaks of his father, the two obviously had a very close relationship, and following his death Arlyth has become very tense and bitter. Apparently even before the empire attacked, Arlyth wasn't fond of meeting new people and tended to let his father handle all interactions with others. Along with being an only child, he didn't have many other friends to confide in aside from his retainer, Darcanas, so the loss of them both has left him with no one he can comfortably open up to. Even though he'll never let anyone see it, he's still very sensitive of the loss of kingdom and people, and lingering on the issue for too long will upset him. Arlyth has a very violent temper, and since he's already rather sadistic with punishing his foes, he won't hesitate to lash out at anyone who messes with him.

He approaches combat with powerful dark magic from both long and close ranges. His long range dark bolts are extremely effective at penetrating heavy armor or machinery and can leave most machines inoperable. He also uses dark energy fields as a means of offense and defense by forming a powerful energy sphere around his body temporarily. He is also capable of using his magic to manipulate/move objects or people, which can be as simple as moving something from one place to another or more complicated like allowing himself to hover/fly or throwing another object/person around. While all his spells are highly powerful, he has no means of physical attacks and is rather delicate. Although he is rather nimble, he has a habit of underestimating his foes and is not always as cautious as he should be when keeping his distance. Compared to his two companions, he tends to catch the attention of approaching enemies first, both because he is usually first to confront foes and also because he is usually confident that his magic prowess will make up for his lessened caution. Although he does heal a bit more quickly than his companions due to his magic, he also tends to take injuries far more often due to his reckless behavior.

Abilities

  • Darc rifting - rank 5/5
  • Anti rifting - rank 5/5
  • Various Dark Elf Ancient magics and mastery over use of Runestones
  • Levitation when channeling rifting/casting spells
  • Accelerated regeneration unless severely weakened or his magic/rifting is disabled
  • Agile and highly flexible

Strengths

  • Strong willed, confident, and persistent
  • Cunning, quick witted, and observant
  • Manipulative, eloquent, and intelligent
  • Dexterous, charismatic, and relentless

Weaknesses

  • Physically delicate and very easy to overpower without his magic
  • Mistrustful, elitist, sadistic, and condescending
  • Arrogant, reckless, and tends to underestimate his adversaries
  • Doesn't follow orders well, stubborn, and overly flirty/suggestive

Backstory

Arlyth grew up in the kingdom of the dark elves as their king's heir and his pride and joy. Since Arlyth was not expected to ascend the throne for many years, he and his father's relationship tended to be much more casual and lacked serious training in leadership and political skills. Since he was a clever young man, he naturally picked up on these skills from his father, but they focused more on building his skill in dark magic. He was naturally adept to the discipline and his skills rivaled those of the elders by the time he reached his late teens. He gained an odd reputation as a respected magic user but also as an odd anti-social prince who refused to take any audience or make any attempts at diplomacy. As a young adult, he also became infamous around the palace for his habit of burning through lovers, sometimes literally.

During his late teen years, a prestigious warrior in service to the king was gradually attempting to court him. This man, Darcanoth Nightshade, was his father's most trusted and deadly warrior. Arlyth took no interest in him though and found him arrogant and presumptuous that his courting would be successful and that he would for whatever reason be the more dominating figure in such a relationship. He held his tongue about his grievances though since this was his father's favorite warrior, so he quietly grew irritated when Darcanoth didn't seem to take the hint.

Not too long after this courting attempt began, Arlyth became particularly interested in a new scholar in the palace. Surprisingly enough, this scholar was Darcanoth's twin brother, Darcanas Nightshade. He found the much quieter and humble brother to be amusing, and Arlyth enjoyed lightly teasing him as he settled into his new job. Arlyth frequently requested him to due mundane tasks for him, such as transcribing scripts on his behalf or gathering books and sources for Arlyth's fleeting interests, with the sole purpose of gaining more opportunities to tease and "play" with this new vassal. He did acknowledge, though, that Darcanas excelled at his work, and over time Darcanas was unofficially promoted to working as Arlyth's personal retainer due to how often and closely he worked with the prince. Arlyth enjoyed the time spent with his "pet," and he gradually realized that Darcanas was quietly harboring feelings for him. It was easy for Arlyth to tempt him into a secretive relationship with him. What he didn't expect though was he too started to genuinely fancy Darcanas.

As a young adult, Arlyth grew closer to Darcanas and noticed how much he did not get along with his twin. Apparently Darcanoth was a cruel and competitive brother who constantly felt the need to show up Darcanas throughout their childhood, always seeking to best him at whatever Darcanas put his efforts to. Arlyth initially grew closer to Darcanas simply because he preferred him over Darcanoth and his irritatingly persistent advances, and he would occasionally take indirect jabs at Darcanoth regarding his preference for his twin whenever he attempted to court him. Eventually the brothers seemed to come to some sort of understanding with time, and there was a brief respite in the conflict among them, especially after Darcanoth went out to war against a mysterious cult seeking to usurp the powers of the Ancients from beneath the dark elf kingdom. His return from the war left him a scarred and damaged mess, raving about whispers from the caverns.

Darcanas apparently attempted to reconcile with his brother when their family proved insensitive toward his trauma, branding him as an embarrassment for his erratic behavior. Despite this, Darcanoth seemed to snap after some time, and he violently kidnapped Arlyth from the palace one day and attempted to take him into the runic caverns. The king stopped him and "disposed of him" following this incident. Arlyth was left with the numerous black scars on his body from the injuries inflicted on him, none of which ever faded with time due to the taint of Ancient energy that imbued Darcanoth when he inflicted the injuries. Both Arlyth and Darcanas are uncertain of Darcanoth's fate, and although Arlyth has no remorse for his fate, he acknowledges that Darcanas mourns the loss of him and their unfulfilled opportunity to make amends.

A few short years later, a human invasion caught the dark elves off guard and their kingdom was almost entirely destroyed. Most of the dark elf population was either slain or scattered into hiding, and to Arlyth's horror his father was executed before his eyes. Arlyth only avoided execution himself due to the emperor of the humans taking interest in him and his power, and he demanded the elf prince be transported to the human capital. Arlyth spent months imprisoned by the humans and was kept like a pet for the emperor until he managed to break out and escape.

The last of the dark elf nobility now remains on the run from the humans. On his travels he encounters the young king of the western forest elves, Caltharsis, and his pupil, Marlex, who both sought Arlyth out for his knowledge of the Ancients. Although not initially keen with joining forces with overlanders, Arlyth agrees to help them with their plan, if only to exact revenge on the humans.

Trivia:

  • Arlyth's general design was rather heavily based on the Dark Elf card from the game, Lost Kingdoms 2. His colors, overall outfit, and pigtails were based on this card's design, although his specific facial features and upper armor design were taken from his dollmaker headshot.
    • His signature dark bolts and barrier abilities are in reference to the Dark Elf card's two attacks.
    • The mask he wears around non-elves is also derived from the Dark Elf card, although the details are a little difficult to make out, and I'm honestly not sure if the card has a mask or if that's just the way its face looks. It's probably not actually a mask, but too late now. XP
    • The Dark Elf card's brief vocal sounds are very feminine sounding, which is why Arlyth is so feminine. Honestly I'm also not sure if the Dark Elf card was intended to be female or just ambiguous, but it's very likely it was intended to be female. There aren't any indications of gender in the card description and both the Elf and Dark Elf cards refer to them as "it" since they are monster cards rather than actual people in the game world. The Elf Lord card is the exception and uses "he" in the card description, although that might be a translation error.
  • Arlyth was initially looked down upon by other Dark Elf nobles and sages since he grew to have such a diminutive stature compared to his very imposing father. It is also a very common trend for Dark Elves with very powerful magic to be rather large/tall, since their magic feeds their growth. Arlyth is one of the handful of outliers though, for he shut up all the gossip by showing up even the elders with his skills at a relatively young age.
  • His father doted on him especially, and he wasn't shy about expressing how much pride he had in his son. Arlyth was well aware of how viciously his father would protect him and tended to tease any of his hecklers with the very real threat of retaliation from the king.
    • Arlyth was very aware of his father's worry of possibly losing him and being alone. His father on the surface seemed to take the loss of his wife well, but Arlyth is simply the only one that gets to see his father's lingering mourning. His father has been honest with him that he fears that the Ancient will one day call to Arlyth for him to "join" them, just as they did with Arlyth's mother. Arlyth obviously doesn't like the idea of his father being sad and alone, and he is very affectionate and close with him since they are the only family either of them have.
    • Since his father was exceptionally large compared to the average Dark Elf and Arlyth was particularly small by contrast, Arlyth had a habit of perching on his father's shoulder when speaking with him privately, usually after audiences with him were dismissed and he was left alone at his throne.
    • Arlyth tended to be rather clingy with his father during his youth and was practically inseparable from him, save for the times when his father met with others or was in public.
    • Arlyth was particularly stricken by the murder of his father, especially since he was forced to helplessly watch. He reacts with extreme violence toward those who disrespect him even in death, but he will fall into a sobbing mess if left alone to wallow on his loss.
  • Arlyth initially teased Darcanas as his new retainer simply because he liked to toy with anyone he had power over. Eventually he grew on him, and Arlyth found it a more amusing venture to seduce him instead.
    • His affections, of course, became more genuine over time, but he still enjoys teasing Darcanas simply because he's easy to fluster.
    • Could be described as a power bottom about 97% of the time. Mostly because Darcanas is wishy-washy and easily flustered.
    • Commonly would play with Darcanas's hair to pass time or entertain himself. He enjoyed telling Darcanas how cute he would look after finishing his hair just to make him flustered.
    • Arlyth was aware how much Darcanas responded to positive attention and praise, so he tended to speak with him very lovingly and shower him in compliments to genuinely make him happy and also deeply fluster him, since he was very unused to such attention prior to their relationship.
    • He was the one who talked Darcanas into wearing outfits with so many cutouts and also getting tattoos.
  • He thinks Darcanas's penmanship is impeccable and tends to make him handle any paperwork or written letters that he's technically supposed to handle himself as prince, whether it’s formal papers or just memos.
    • Would relentlessly and shamelessly bother Darcanas while he was working at his desk, to the point where he'd basically drape himself across him just to get his attention.
  • Has a rather high libido and tends to make a lot of innuendos buried under his eloquent manner of speech.
    • With Darcanas though, he will sometimes throw in very blunt and to the point sexual advances and forgo all this roundabout euphemisms.
    • Successfully weaned Darcanas off of using any phrases similar to "What should I do?" or "I don't know what to do," by always answering him with "Me." Arlyth finds it amusing that Darcanas would actively avoid using such phrasing to not give him any more opportunities than usual. What a horny brat. XP
  • Enjoys long warm baths, particularly from the underground hot springs connected to the palace. He's rather grumpy about not having access to them anymore.
    • Always attempted to persuade Darcanas to join him from time to time, but he was rarely successful, if only because Darcanas is too awkward and embarrassed to consider doing so.
  • Arlyth is particularly skilled at encasing objects or people in conjured dark crystals. He used to encase random objects or even small creatures to keep them as souvenirs.
    • Also capable of shattering such crystals, which can be an effective attack or even an exploding projectile, although he rarely uses it since it takes time to set up and conjure.
  • Dislikes being touched by anyone without permission and may very well lash out with magic upon unwanted contact, however innocuous it might be.
    • He is, however, very touchy-feely with people he likes.
  • Arlyth was initially relatively tall like the rest of my elves, but I made him shorter because I thought the height difference between him and Darcanas was cute. I ended up making Caltharsis and Marlex slightly shorter too because I didn't want Arlyth to look too small compared to them.
  • Most of his favorite foods are different kinds of fruit indigenous to Alrunik, although he gradually gets used to some overworld fruits as well. He thinks some of them are a little too sweet, since apparently Alrunik's fruits are typically bitter. For this reason he warms up to bitter citrus fruits more readily. His favorite fruit is likely similar to pomegranate.
    • He's not a vegetarian or anything, but he tends to prefer most other food groups over meats. He's very picky about what kind of meat/animals he will eat.
  • When walking around, he has a habit of walking/balancing on elevated surfaces if they're available, like walking on fences or short walls rather than the road. Since most people tend to be taller than he is, he tends to find it entertaining to stand on higher surfaces and get a different view of things.
    • He also had a weird habit of walking around on the large tables of food during parties at the palace. Probably not polite or sanitary, but it's not like anyone could tell him not to do that when he wanted to.
  • Since he hates wearing shoes, he prefers the surfaces he walks on to be easy on his feet. If the terrain underfoot isn't up to his standards, he may very well scorch the ground with his magic to "remedy" the issue.
  • Arlyth's favorite place in the palace to have quiet time other than his own room or the hot springs is the inner gardens. He enjoys sitting under an old dark willow tree that has been growing there for ages, since this tree is significant to the Willow lineage. He tends to read there or conjure dark crystals idly when he wants time to himself.
    • His parents apparently used to sit there with him when he was very young to read or do other recreational activities. Arlyth doesn't remember his mother very well, but he does vaguely remember her presence and these moments around the tree. That's probably why he finds it comforting to be there.
  • Sometimes would refer to Darcanas as "pet" in an endearing manner. Has a habit of calling Marlex that now, mostly because he considers Marlex to be Caltharsis's "pet" of sorts, and he enjoys teasing the easily flustered forest elf.
  • Mercilessly flirts with Caltharsis, both because he does find him somewhat attractive but primarily because he likes how it distresses Marlex. Unfortunately Caltharsis seems completely oblivious to both of their affections, although Arlyth is mildly amused by how over-his-head it seems to be.
  • Arlyth never actually spoke to Darcanoth directly during his courting attempt and would only inform his father to convey his thoughts on his behalf. The only time Arlyth ever addressed him directly was when he attempted to take him by force.
    • Arlyth even refused to address Darcanoth directly if he ever caught him harassing Darcanas, and he would simply dismiss Darcanoth like he wasn't even there and take Darcanas away from the situation with him.
  • Is polyamorous and doesn't consider sex or intimacy to be something limited to only one person.
    • This being said though, he is very loyal to the point of being possessive of those he grows attached to.
    • Despite being possessive of lovers, he is not jealous in the slightest if they also seek other lovers. He thinks it's only fair since he doesn't limit himself either. He's possessive in the sense that he treats them as precious "belongings" that others are not allowed to impose themselves upon, although he never actually views them as belongings or objects. It's more of a figurative comparison.
    • If asked, Darcanas is certainly his favorite. Arlyth and his father were discussing potentially having Darcanas become Arlyth’s consort. The king was open minded about their relationship mostly because he’s never seen his son take a relationship so seriously before. Darcanas never knew they were having such discussions before the human invasion.
  • He previously had several suitors that attempted to court him, but Arlyth was never particularly interested in that many of them. Some of them he had fleeting relationships with, but ultimately he lost interest when they couldn't keep up with him or tried to correct his odd behavior in general.
    • He has also killed some of them when they got too bothersome or offended him, and of course Arlyth isn’t known to be forgiving.
    • It’s generally known in the palace that the crown prince has had a lot of lovers, but obviously no one directly talks about it. It’s also known that he’s killed some of them, and some workers in the palace will occasionally gossip about how long his next lover will last.
    • Needless to say, Darcanas has managed to be the singular exception to this trend.
  • Arlyth eventually started bringing Darcanas to the various parties held at the palace, citing that he needed his retainer to tend to him now that he has attained enough rank in the employee hierarchy. In actuality, Arlyth has never invited his retainers or past lovers to parties because they never became important enough for him to bring them into the semi-public eye. Arlyth just wants to show off his pretty pet to the noble circle, and also show his father how well Darcanas could fit in to this social circle.
    • Arlyth thoroughly enjoyed fancy-ing up Darcanas for such parties. Darcanas was mostly indifferent about the parties, but he appreciated the effort and attention given to him by Arlyth.
