Profile

Hehlel

A servant of God, with empathy powers, banished from Heaven due to helping a half-demon

3165999_nsgKkdwtuHR09pK.jpg?1496019130
  • Nicknames From Raleigh: Feathery bitch, whitekin, featherball, winged one, turtledove, feather-spilling paperclip, shuttlecock etc. etc. etc. | From Notre Dame Society: Lightbringer, Lightkeeper... Lucifer
  • Age Unknown to her, but "young" by angel standards
  • Species Angel
  • Gender Female
  • Occupation Empath of The Lord
  • Sexuality Hehlel can feel love, but it's doubtful she's capable of lust. Thus, if pressed, I would probably call her a demiromantic asexual.
  • Playlist: Verdict playlist
  • Setting

A multiverse of realms and pocket dimensions

On one side is Heaven, referred to as Home by the angels. A boundaryless, unreal place with no form, space nor time, the inhabitants of which have no body nor awareness of oneself until leaving the place.

On the other side there’s the (presumably physical) Hell, a blazing inferno inhabited by demons, in an eternal war against the divine powers.

In the middle resides 21st century Earth, with minor alterations (such as demons in Australia, psions (part-angels with supernatural powers) or vestas (possibly the source of reptilian conspiracy myths)) and the existence of organizations like the H.C. to keep such things undercover from the general population).

Between these three are numerous smaller and larger realms, most governed by divine or infernal forces, with many nearer to Home possessing a dreamlike sense of unrealness, making them tolerable for angels.

  • Personality

Hehlel tries to be "good", whatever that means. As a young angel she's still in the process of developing a personality beyond "that which my superiors say is a wholesome thing to be". Bits and pieces are emerging, however. The girl is devout and tends to think of people in absolutes. Everything is either good or bad, black or white. She's also stubborn and has a flair for dramatics.

Hehlel is extremely ignorant, but not stupid. Her eccentricities arise from the girl’s deep-rooted unawareness and willful ignorance regarding the earthly world.

  • Appearance

Hehlels’ appearance is youthful and – for most people - communicates a sort of innocent beauty, devoid of sexuality. Her skin looks the sort of smooth porcelain white most commonly found on the ladies of renaissance paintings. Thick lashes surround a pair of large azure eyes and underneath a small, straight nose rest lips that are like rose petals. A mane of unstyled strawberry blonde hair reaches to her mid-back.

The angels’ wrists are delicate, neck slender, hands and feet small. Nonetheless that doll-like body has some flesh on it, rather to smooth out any angles than to add curves, thus once again bringing to mind a lady from an old painting rather than a conventional model.

Out of her back grows a pair of large, silvery-tinted white wings, each as long as her whole body, which look like they weigh a ton even though Hehlel never seems to show any discomfort over dragging them around. The wings can be made to disappear at will, however require concious effort to stay that way.

Her skin and wings almost have a glow to them, one that’s been tarnished through experiences on Earth but still shines through occasionally.

However Hehlel’s downfall and her subsequent illness has left marks on the angels’ body. The backside of the girls’ wings is becoming more disheveled with every time she ends up on her back and the tips are missing feathers as far along as she can reach. Dark circles have formed under her eyes from irregular sleep cycles, illness or starvation and her body shows signs of weight loss, bruising and stress.

  • Likes Birds, sweets, churches (though possibly not the people running them), order and classical art. As for people...Gregory Graves and Amber, because they are probably the most „Good“ people she’s met so far. Also Itzal. Because he’s warm and stuff.
  • Dislikes Raleigh, H.C. Human Curiosity, the general experience of eating or swallowing, the general experience of having to sleep and see dreams, large crowds and cities, demons, demonic imagery (good luck when she discovers the metal subculture), the general idea of time passing, the general idea of people aging or things wearing away, darkness, the general idea of once judeo-christian nations forgetting God, laying or sleeping on her back, the feeling of being weighed down and trapped which comes with physical existence, uncertainty, anything she doesn’t understand. As far as she's concerned Earth may be God's masterpiece, but it is no place for an angel and exists solely to make her more Wrong, impure, imperfect and physical.
  • Strengths Appearing to a casual observer like a beautiful human, ability of flight, ability to hide her wings, ethereal binds, obedience, stubborness, an empathic ability honed to such an extent that she can tell a person is lying through the bout of guilt or anticipation which accompanies it.
  • Weaknesses Lack of physical strenght, deep-rooted willful ignorance, naivety and lack of knowledge regarding the physical world. The aforementioned empathic ability, which can’t be turned off. It makes staying in cities highly disorienting and areas of concentrated negative emotion, like funerals, battlefields or torture chambers a terrible agony.
  • Special skill: Capitalizing words in spoken language (i.e. He, Right, Wrong) :P
  • Backstory

Most of Hehlels life has been a jumble of disconnected memories, with barely any sense of time passing.

The only hint that might point towards the angel’s „birth era“ in this case is that she was originally taught biblical hebrew as a preparation for future contact with humans. However her education suddenly veered towards classical latin before she’d managed to master the language.

At the beginning of the 14th century she was taken under the wing of a warrior-angel named Dardariel, after he found her and a group of other young angels perusing a freshly printed copy of Dante's "The Divine Comedy" which had found it's way into the borderrealms. Dardariel taught her protective magic and spoke of The War, Earth and demons so that when she were to face an enemy for the first time she would not be caught unaware.

At an unknown year in the 16th century she was chosen, along with Dardariel and a healer named Dahliel, to take part in a mission to Earth lead by Dominion Mendrion and had a brief glimpse of the City of Firenze/Florence. The experience is etched into her mind as a predominantly disturbing one. Due to not living up to her expectations she did not receive many tasks after her trip to Earth and soon lost contact with Dardariel. Once she became aware of the fact it was already a couple hundred years too late to make any inquiries.

Thus she continued her diligent servitude whenever she was called upon, giving her best and not paying mind to the world around her. Until one day in the 21st century she was tasked with guarding a group of demons that had been taken prisoners...

  • Story as-of-roleplay:

Skype roleplay with me as Hehlel and the GM as everyone else

THE RULE OF PERCEPTIONAL RIDICULOUSNESS applies i.e. „The longer a roleplay series has been going on the more nonsensical it seems to anyone not taking part in it.“

After a particularily fierce battle many demons were imprisoned to be interrogated and killed. Amongst these captives Hehlel discovered one who – unlike his pureblooded brethren – was capable of feeling fear. As the demon spoke a little latin she learned that he was infact a halfbreed, with some human ancestry. Hehlel agreed to help him, figuring that other angels – being servants of God – would see, that torturing a creature like that for information was an overkill and that he could be changed into something more Right with the correct moral guidance. However, the angels’ continued acts to help an imprisoned demon only served to enrage her superiors and Hehlel was convicted of treason.

With the help of two fellow angels - Nathaniel and Cory - she and Itzal managed to escape to Earth, ending up deep in the irish countryside. Itzal was quickly snatched by a cover-up organization, however, leading Hehlel to take on a cross-country trek so as to gain to help for finding the demon in London. She managed to come to an agreement with said organization - the Human Curiosity, but not long after that Itzal was snatched up by yet another interested party. In her quest to find the demon she instead stumbled on the Notre Dame Society in Paris - a cult made up of fallen angels and their descendants. They'd been lead to believe that they needed to help God kickstart the Apocalypse and in return they could return to Heaven. Hehlel bought the story and agreed to help, figuring that if the necessary rituals and sacrifices are done on Gods command then they can't be "the bad guys".

Plot twist, the cult were the bad guys. She'd been tricked to sacrifice a de-winged Cory and released a vengeful Old Testament era entity who was seeking to become a new god. Hehlel unloaded her anger on said entity and, in turn, the entity disposed of her by sending the angel to the realm commonly known as Hell.

She spent the remainder of the roleplay with demons, in the tunnels and subterraneal city beneath the eternal fire blazing aboveground. Trying to find her way out. Learning about the local people and their customs. And slowly realizing that, unbeknownst to them, angels were the real monsters.

  • Itzal Friend

Part-demon who keeps getting kidnapped. She sees him as a friend and considers the demon to be her personal responsibility since she was the one who brought him to Earth.

  • Dardariel Mentor

A side-character who started living their own life. Taught Hehlel about Earth and lightmagic back in the days. They've not met since the 17th century, however.

  • Raleigh Babysitter

The HC worker put in charge to watch after Hehlel and Itzal. Crude, grumpy bloke who nonetheless apparently would've ended up joining the main cast in their worldsaving quest.

  • Dana Host, friend

A council secretary in the demon capital of Izariet, and Hehlels host during her stay in Hell. Impeccably polite. Botany nerd who can talk for hours about breeding luminescent mosses.

  • Favorite color?

None, but considers white and pastel colors to be more "proper".

  • Does your character collect anything?

English or french words, at the moment.

  • Allergies?

Not sure as she's eaten so little, but from a completely "evolutionary" point of view I wonder if she might be lactose-intolerant.

  • Favorite artist?

Possibly Abbot Thayer, if she knew more about art

  • Kind of clothing?

She has no fashion or style preferences and will wear anything as long as it covers her modesty and has some room around the back for the wings.

  • First memory?

    "Cogito ergo sum..."

  • Favorite animal?

Sparrows. She fed them at a park by river Seine during her stay with the Notre Dame Society.

  • What element would they be?

    Air, most definitely

  • Theme song?

    The Crüxshadows - Sophia

  • Alignment?

    Lawful good

  • Deadly sin that best represents them?

    Pride

  • Which animal would they be?

    White heron

  • Hobbies?

Birdwatching, linguistics, history of religion, teaching a half-demon to "know right from wrong" (even though he seems to have a much better and up-to-date understanding of the term)

  • Regrets?

Bouts of regret regarding getting involved with Itzal go hand-in-hand with bouts of homesickness. Hehlel also blames herself deeply for the dewingment, banishment and eventual deaths of Nat and Cory - the angels who had helped her escape

  • Favorite place?

The realm referred to as Home or Heaven

  • Role model?

    Dardariel

  • Favorite foods?

Chocolate, hot cocoa, bananas and sweetened mandarin oranges. The more sugary, the better.

  • Favorite book?

The Bible and an illustrated Russian birdbook that she can't read but likes the pictures of.

  • Mode of transportation?

Hitchhiking mostly, as she has no money

  • Pets?

    Does Itzal count?

  • Weapon

Flashes of light, ethereal binds, wings

  • Most appropriate TV trope(s)?

Broken angel, Good is not nice, Winged humanoid, Angelic beauty, Inhumanly beautiful race, Humans are bastards, Guardian angel, Chaste hero, Blank Slate, The Empath, The Ingenue

  • Smells like?

Scent of feathers and soap. Washes often to combat the feelings of uncomfortableness a physical body gives her and to take her mind off things.

  • How do they feel about love?

Even though Hehlel's never experienced it first-hand she considers it to be a pure and beautiful feeling of divine origin - and thus one that anyone with demon-blood would be uncapable of.

  • Where they live now?

Formerly H.C.'s Safehouse in the suburbs of London, then shared a room with Amber in The Notre Dame Society underneath Paris. Now resides in the residence of Dana, the secretary of Izariet's demon-council.

  • Jung Personality Type?

    ISTJ (Introvert 67%, Sensing 31%, Thinking 1%, Judging 44%)

  • Fears or phobias?

Demons, damnation, The Inquisitors (wouldn't dare disobey them nonetheless), loss or injury of wings, filth, nature, children, nightmares and, to a lesser extent, continued physical existence and humans (as even though she considers them "a masterpiece of God" she thinks mortals to be terribly unpredictable and in that regards about as terrifying as demons)

  • Music they listen to?

If she were to listen to music I imagine that she'd find jazz to be to her liking, as well as perking up to any song that pads itself with latin.

  • Does their universe have a god?

I reckon that there's most likely a creator, but whether it's the judeochristian God is arguable. The Seraphs say that God exists and claim to be direct messengers between Him and the lower castes of angels. Itzal claims that demons say The Devil created the world and God imprisoned him in fire in order to steal the world for himself.

  • Personal problems?

A person in constant fight with her ethics and what she's been told is "Right", knowing that she might never be able to return Home, trapped on Earth lacking knowledge of both English and any technology past the 16th century.

  • Religious and to what extent? Any spiritual beliefs?

Her existence so far has entirely circled around religion.

  • Kind of student if they attend/were to attend school? (e.g. class clown, straight A)

The killjoy-tattertale that, even though not the brightest, obsesses over good marks and deadlines.

  • Random fact!

Angels have very flexible wing-shoulder joints (makes drawing them more interesting).

  • Do ghosts or supernatural entities exist in their’ world?

Do psy's, vestas, angels and demons count?

  • What ONE item would they take to an uninhabited island?

Itzal, he's like a schwiss army knife of wilderness survival.

  • Outlook on life?

A life has no worth without a purpose, an angel's purpose is to serve their superiors and god, ergo an angel with no god or superiors is worthless. She gets by on her hope for redemption - without that it's unlikely she'd last very long.

  • What or who inspired you to create them?

She was inspired by my deranged, hedonistic shadow-demon OC, Danton, and originally devised with the objective of being his complete opposite.

  • Most important person in their life

God, if He counts as a person (Itzal and Dana still have some way to go, but they're getting there)

  • Favorite object?

She's not aware of it yet, but considering how Hehlel's been holding on to them even after discarding the rest of her clothes it's clear that she's developing an emotional attachment to her bracelets.

  • When did you create this character?

First session is from 18th of January 2012, first mention of concept is from my blog, 2nd of April 2009.

  • If your character has a significant other, what would their song be?

For Itzal:Imagine Dragons - Demons | For Dardariel: VNV Nation - Nova

  • What (if they can) does your character eat?

After a week of starvation she's finally forced herself so far as to accept small amounts of food which she considers to look and smell "edible", such as bread and fresh fruit. She's still an incredibly picky eater.

  • What is something other people assume about your character?

Apparently the one's not aware of her divine origin commonly mistake her for a mediterranean tourist or immigrant (because -obviously- the language this distressed girl is speaking can't be latin, it's probably some italian dialect or something)

  • Do they like the name they were given?

Yes - she believes to have been born with the name and considers it a part of her, something that defines her and vice versa.

  • Nervous habits?

    Picking on her feathers

  • Languages spoken

Angelic (enochian), latin, old-hebrew, some common phrases of french (in particular regarding food and bird species), about five words of demonic and english each

  • Wears jewelry?

Two bracelets of unknown metal - possibly orichalcum or some gold alloy.

  • Have they ever wanted to commit suicide?

She's considered going back and submitting to The Inquisitors, which would likely lead to her death. However neither returning nor killing herself is an option as long as there's anyone on Earth still in need of her and as long as she doesn't feel redeemed.

  • Glass half full or half empty?

    Half empty

  • Belief in an afterlife?

She believes that only humans, the pinnacles of God's creation, are created with souls and have a chance at redemption and afterlife. Angels and demons, however, will cease to exist at the moment of death, because why should someone who'se only purpose is to serve their master be created with a soul? | As of roleplay the existence of souls has been all but proven for fallen angels, she's still unsure of what to make of angelic afterlife however.

  • Views on gambling, lying, killing, etc...?

She would kill a pure-blooded demon with no remorse or hesitation, but couldn't bring herself to do so with anything sentient that feels fear or compassion. She doesn't lie, instead opting to tell half-truths or stay silent if the need arises and hasn't formed an opinion on gambling yet, but would most likely consider it Wrong.

  • Do they stand up for what they believe in?

She tries to, however considering her ignorance regarding most areas of life she ends up sounding self-righteous and condescending

  • How much do they value money?

She has very little concept of money, only time will tell

  • Passive, agressive, or defensive?

    Passive-defensive.

  • Cat or dog person?

    Cat person

  • Sworn enemy?

As of the roleplay: Hanokh, possibly

  • Is their name a pun of anything?

Not exactly, but Hehlel means "The Shining One" in old-hebrew, also signifying The Morning Star and thus Lucifer.

  • Anyone they really hate?

Raleigh, for his worldviews and demeaning behaviour. However she's not afraid of the man, knowing that even through their mutual dislike he's been forbidden from using violence against her and even visited him during their stay in The Notre Dame Society, as he was the only person who had the time (though not the will) to listen to her, on account of being bedbound at the time.

  • How has their look/design changed over time?

She originally had the long, pointy wings of a tern - their lower side white and upper seal-gray with black tips. It was only during the painting of "Verdict" that I realized it wasn't working out and opted to change them for something more traditional.

  • How have ghosts affected this character's view of their own afterlife?

Thus far she has yet to meet a ghost, but she has seen signs of the possibility of existence-beyond-death, being able to sense remnants of the souls of the people sacrificed in The White Room...including those of wingless angels. That forced her to re-evaluate her beliefs of angels not having souls nor an afterlife.

  • Most traumatic experience?

Definitely the agony endured in the presence of The Inquisitors and the illness which followed. It was basically her first time to feel pain beyond a stubbed toe.

  • What brings them the most joy?

"Listening" to the emotions of people attending a sermon and feeding birds by the River Seine. Once in Hell - speaking to Dana about plants or Earth, for his enthusiasm was often infectious.

  • Are they ticklish?

Yes, especially the wings and the soles of her feet

  • Do they play any instruments?

    Definitely not harp

  • Favorite holiday?

Christmas, because of it's deep-rooted background as the birthday of Je- Oh, who are we kidding, she likes getting presents!

  • Important people in their life

Dardariel, who taught her self-defence. Nat and Cory, who helped her escape. Mr. Greg and Katie, who found her in the woods after Itzal had been taken. Itzal himself. Amber. Dana, his host in Izariet.

  • If they could have one thing in the world?

    Redemption.

  • Would they dare kill someone?

She considers a human's life to be more sacred than hers, but might be forced into killing someone if that person was a murderer. | UPDATE: Evidently she is capable of killing on orders from the higher-ups and if the subject is willing

  • Involved with magic or witchcraft?

Possesses some angelic skills, including flight, empathy, hiding wings, forcefields, flashes of light and a skill that effectively binds it's victim until they can't move.

  • Which historical figure (either real or in-universe) do they most evoke?

    Lucifer The Lightbringer
