Darcy was once the scourge of Calliope's seas, carving a fierce reputation as a pirate due to her ruthless pillaging of trade vessels and evasion of naval forces. However, when sea monsters began to threaten Calliope, the Duchess paid her handsomely to aid in the defense of the city. Her assistance ultimately secured her a pardon for her past crimes, and her newfound wealth allowed her to retire from her life of swashbuckling. She converted her pirate ship into a cargo ship and spent a few years making an honest living as a freighter.

Feeling listless, Darcy turned to extravagant spending as a way to pass the time. At every port, she purchased jewels, gold, and armaments and paraded through town, then regaled locals with embellished stories about her past adventures as a pirate. Spending brought her admiration, and attention was one of the few pleasures she had left in her mundane life.

While perusing an oysterman's selection of exorbitantly upcharged pearls, Darcy bumped into a young cartographer, causing her maps to tumble into the ocean. The cartographer, Florence, gave Darcy a fierce verbal lashing about the importance of financial management until realizing she had drawn a crowd of curious onlookers. Darcy was intrigued by Florence's honesty and practicality and offered her a position as navigator on the freighter. From that day on, the two formed an unlikely yet inseparable partnership.

One of Darcy's voyages brought them back through Calliope, during which a pair of travelers requested passage going anywhere. One was Cordelia, whom Darcy recognized as a local minor celebrity. The other was Bruno, a reserved half-orc and Cordelia's implied bodyguard. Sensing an opportunity for greater adventure with these new companions, Darcy agreed to take them aboard, hopeful that the journey might reignite the excitement she desperately missed.
