Jean/ne’s family has always been King of Roses. At least, that’s what their mother, the previous King, told them. Being the King is in their blood, she would whisper as she tucked a young Jean/ne into bed. Don’t worry, you’ll be a natural.

As they were officially deemed successor, they were taught all the skills they would need once they assumed the role. True to their house, their mother passed on to them the art of deception and her way with words. When Jean/ne was a little older, her mother began teaching them the art of seduction as well. Self-defense, politics, history—anything possibly useful to a future House ruler, they studied. Most major decisions were made for them, allowing them to focus on accumulating as much knowledge as possible. They practiced their skills on the other members of the House, charming chefs into giving them late night snacks and guards to let them sneak out in the wee hours of the night to meet up with friends.

Jean/ne’s mother was betrayed by what she had assumed to be a close friend, leading to her untimely death and Jean/ne’s early succession to the role just after turning 17. Because of this, they distanced themselves from their childhood friends, pulling into themselves, afraid that one of them might betray them as well. After watching their mother do it for so long, taking up the role seemed only natural, and it felt like the best way to honor their mother’s memories.

But do they really want the King role? They took it on to fulfill their mother’s wishes, but they aren’t sure they actually want all this power. They just want a normal life, where enemies aren’t trying to assassinate them left and right, where they have to be afraid of their own house for fear someone in it will betray them next. They flirt and pretend to love everyone they meet, to cover up their own weaknesses and insecurities. They want to feel as carefree and light as they make themselves out to be. Maybe, if they become a regular citizen in the house, they’ll be able to live a normal life. Or, maybe, if they just stick with the role and play it out, things will sort themselves out.

When the long-lost House of Zinnia rose to attack, King Jean/ne joined the alliance between the Houses to protect their people. Newly motivated to protect their loved ones, they charged into battle, heading straight for the general to attempt to stop the war before it could take too many innocent lives. Although the allied Houses ultimately were able to capture the enemy general, Jean/ne's life was lost, a sword embedded into their side.
