Coryn (Genshin Impact) (Headcanons)

Profile

All items below are based on headcanons.

The elements of "Miasmo" and "Ourano", as well as the concepts of "Corynacht", "The Forgotten God/Archon", "the Howling Chorus", etc.
are all concepts that I made for my own fun and personal use. As a result, details may contrast with canon or never show up in canon.

General

These headcanons are more general items relating to Coryn directly, but are self-made entirely and/or not discussed until this point.

autism

autistic

disability

Coryn's autism tends to manifest in various ways, but the most common are as follows.

  • Stimming:
    • Through twirling his hair; in Teyvat, some of his hair was braided, which Coryn had upkept and began to use for stimming.
    • Through summoning his catalyst; he'll idly spin it with one hand, not as a threat, but to control his stimulation of the environment.
    • Through pacing; while he does do this when he's deep in thought, he also tends to pace when he feels stressed out, and it's one way he can "control" the environment. You know. Pacing around in it.
  • Special Interests: Coryn's special interests tended to last from anywhere to 1/2 a year to 5+ years on and off, and ranged from things such as books and media to celebrities. He also has a lot of odd knowledge thanks to working in a library previously.
  • Issues with socializing: Finding himself extremely awkward on Earth, being thrown into Teyvat essentially wiped the board and gave him a reason to force himself to work harder at socializing with others. With Kaeya being far more charismatic than he is, Coryn does feel rather insecure about this part of his autism, but nonetheless tries to do his best.
  • Sensory Issues:
    • As a child, Coryn despised vegetables; while he's grown tolerant of them long before Teyvat, certain vegetables still don't "feel" right or "taste" right to him.
    • He very much enjoys spicy foods, even eating those that send him to spice-driven tears just to have that feeling. This is me writing a callout on myself.

adhd

disability

Coryn's parents hadn't sought to divulge his autistic diagnosis until he was much older, resulting in him attempting to find more answers to things autism didn't cover. He knows his parents wouldn't allow him to get diagnosed further out of ableist "fears", but he nonetheless refuses to say he has ADHD, only saying he suspects he does.

Symptoms he has noticed include excessive physical movement, excessive talking, acting without thinking, forgetfulness, interrupting conversations, and oftentimes having a shorter attention span than he would like. Of course, he does admit some of these may be comorbid with his autism, or entirely his autism itself.

Things that Coryn has been associated with.

  • Royal Water Lilies (post here): "Your character reminds me the Royal Water Lily and this is gonna be a weird take. I feel like your character has benefit the Genshin Impact cast like a waterlily helps the ecosystem! Also the waterlily is symbolic of rebirth which kinda happened to your character being transported to Mondstadt!"

toxic masculinity

socialization

assholery

relationships

Coryn grew up with a lot of toxic masculinity, especially as his older brother's hot temper was only barely punished in comparison to certain other actions that had harsher punishments. His father saw him as inferior to his other brothers due to his preference for reading over physical work.

While his brothers projected this toxic masculinity outwards, Coryn instead turned his inwards, trying to claw his way up his own personal standards, yet keeping himself determined by his male family members' own.

As a result, Teyvat becomes an odd breath of fresh air. Men were more than just providers, but allowed to be as they pleased, even vulnerable. Women could be warriors and nobody batted an eye. The Acting Grand Master of an authority of Mondstadt was even a woman!

Ironically, Coryn straddled an odd line where he absorbed a lot of the negatives of male and female socialization, where he tried to refuse burdening others with his problems, becoming his own biggest critic while also being more tolerant of others even when they do things similar to himself. I.e., it's fine if that guy's gay/in a relationship with another man, but if it happens to me, I'm fucked.

While Coryn tried his best not to be toxic, it was very clear that he was still very guarded on Earth, and this form of guarding himself involved keeping a lot of people at arm's length, and...this form of guarding himself actually contributed to a lot of his initial assholery.

Despite this, as most would soon realize, Coryn does have a clear moral code. He doesn't lie unless he's been asked to OR there's a very good reason to do so, he doesn't like the idea of hurting others unless they've proven themselves to be hostile and there's no way to reason with them (the Abyss Order, Treasure Hoarders, etc.) OR it's a requirement to get them to see reason (a la Dvalin).

How it ties to him emotionally is pretty obvious -- well, it is toxic masculinity upholding a good portion of it. He tries not to be vulnerable emotionally, and he gets embarrassed if he cries, knowing that these things would be seen as weakness on Earth.

Not to be cliche, but that vulnerability probably helps him in his journey. It warms him up to some people much faster than others, even if it's clear to some that there's certain things he shouldn't be told about until much later.

ending

corynacht arc

teyvat

earth

kaeya alberich

The doorway to returning to Earth would've shown him glimpses of the life he'd disappeared from, and as he watches it from his vantage point, the final nail of "surely this is a dream (or I'm in a coma)" is pulled off.

And as it dawns on Coryn that he could just turn around and never go back to Earth, he does just need a moment to reflect just how much he'd seen and how much he'd changed as a person in his core.

Teyvat...made him vulnerable emotionally, but it didn't strike him down for that vulnerability. Instead, people embraced it, even people he shared a mutual dislike for. His weaknesses were never used to just beat him down; they were instead made known to him, then guided into being another part of him that he could find malleable.

While aloud, Coryn says that it's Kaeya, it's mostly because Kaeya is the strongest representation and link to Teyvat. Kaeya was the first to even see a lot of Coryn's true self, and would know more about Coryn than anyone else in Teyvat, period.

Combat / Abilities

This is a set of headcanons for abilities Coryn has in combat, as well as a couple of abilities outside of it.

resonating

statues

constellation

ourano

light

physical

fighting

catalyst

Coryn, like the Traveler, can resonate at any Statue of the Seven in order to gain the ability to use their Element as if he had their Vision from the start. Due to his different weapon, though, each ability is different than the traveler's, having different applications.

Don't be deceived by the catalyst, he can and will get physical with his attacks if backed into a corner.

Namely, Coryn has realized that nobody in Teyvat really kicks, and uses that to his advantage. He also enjoys using his catalyst for unconventional means, such as riding down rails or using it as a physical weapon.

Coryn has definitely broken a catalyst or two by using it as a physical weapon. Namely hitting a mitachurl over the head with it once after he jumped on it (“get on the Hydra’s back!” style).

He can also resonate at any statue of Corynacht in order to use Miasmo, but this would be a very, very unique occurrence due to Corynacht's status as "The Forgotten God".

Coryn also can't use Ourano, the element of light, as there is no confirmed Archon of Light, let alone any statues of them.

When using any Elemental Burst, a shine will strike the lens of his glasses in the color of the element he's using (mint green for Anemo, gold for Geo, etc.).

anemo

wind

swirl

Talents:

  • Normal Attack: Butterfly Fists
  • Performs up to 5 rapid attacks using concentrated wind, focusing them to feel similar to fists.
  • Charged Attack: Consumes a certain amount of stamina in order to unleash two larger wind fists.
  • Plunging Attack: Plunges downwards with several fists made of concentrated wind accompanying him, dealing Anemo AOE damage when he lands.
  • Elemental Skill: Wind's Shout
  • This attack draws in the nearby wind, before expelling it in a harsh barrier, driving enemies away and dealing Anemo damage.
  • Hold: Damage and AOE increases gradually.
  • Elemental Burst: The Gales of Rebellion
  • "You think you can take me down that easily?"
  • A whirling gale surrounds Coryn and a portion of the area around him, drawing opponents both near himself and near the outside of the tornado into it. This deals Anemo damage each 0.7 seconds, 7 times.
  • Despite a similar effect to the Traveler's Elemental Burst, Coryn's control of this "barrier" is centered around himself for the duration of the attack, allowing him to run around and pick up more enemies until the time runs out.
  • On the other hand, this can cause problems if the enemies in the barrier aren't defeated by the end of the duration. Once they're up, it causes Coryn some risks without proper planning.

shield

Talents:

  • Normal Attack: Iron Fists
  • Similar to Butterfly Fists, except using rocks to form fist-like projectiles instead of concentrated wind. Coryn's other attacks are also affected in this manner.
  • Elemental Skill: Stalagmite Strike
  • Causes a stalagmite column to strike the enemy in front of him, dealing Geo AOE damage in a limited area on top of the Geo damage from the stalagmite itself. This stalagmite is considered a Geo construct, and can be climbed.
  • Hold: The stalagmite can be positioned, including on walls, resulting in stair-like constructs.
  • Elemental Burst: The Chains of Contract
  • "I'll bind you to a contract made in hell!"
  • Several stone chains burst from the ground, clinging to the target(s) and applying the Contractual Chains status.
  • Contractual Chains traps opponents in place using chains made of Geo, and applies the Geo status to them. When an opponent affected by Contractual Chains takes damage, the status is removed and Geo damage is dealt; however, it also applies a Debtor status to the opponent.
  • Debtor causes the opponent to take gradual Geo damage every 0.7 seconds, for 7 seconds.

  • His affections start out soft, slow, and hesitant; over time, though, he begins to lower his walls and reciprocate with less hesitation, and even giving unconscious signals of trust such as leaning against Kaeya.
  • Coryn's kisses are like his affections just after his confession at Windblume: soft and hesitant. No matter how brief they are, he will be blushing afterwards.
  • When drawn in for longer kisses, Coryn ends up as bright as a beet afterwards.
  • While his sensory issues lead to issues with hugging most people, Kaeya is definitely the first one Coryn actively hugs.

nightmares

fears

Original post.

Back in modern Earth, he'd mostly been afraid of being alone -- or worse, getting close to someone else only to get hurt. He'd probably had nightmares about exes he'd had online retaliating against his boundaries. Between that and the conservative household he was raised in, he'd built himself a persona that was designed to protect himself.

In Teyvat, it probably takes him a long while for him to develop fears, but I'd think he'd eventually grow to fear what more could appear during his travels. While logically, he knows he and Kaeya (and anyone else who joins them in any point in time) could probably kick any threat's ass, it doesn't stop him from feeling that way regardless.

relax

calm

peace

Original post.

In modern Earth, being curled up with a book or his phone and surfing is one way to relax him. If something distressing happens that he can't use those, though, he'd usually make up a project to get busy with.

In Teyvat, definitely exploring the world around him. After a while, he'd find that the company of those close to him would relax him, but for a while he's in a period where he's trying to find out who he really is, both in the literal sense and the emotional sense.

food

favorites

Original post.

In modern Earth, he was definitely a chocolate person! It was always a treat but also a benefit to eat something chocolatey. Pizza's a second.

In Teyvat, he develops a soft spot for Kaeya's Fruity Skewers, but Crystal Shrimp is definitely his favorite. It helps that he liked seafood back in his world, I guess.
