Niles Piper, more commonly known as "Black Swan", is a private investigator who resides in the city of Squall Marina on the coast of Cynefin. They are well-known in some circles as someone who will always take a job if it helps uncover the truth, or if it serves the greater good. Although their investigative skills are reliable, however, they've recently found themself digging deeper into the evil that's taken root in Gaelen, which threatens their life and safety. That hardly dampens their theatric and optimistic demeanor, though, nor does it put them off from searching for the truth.

Niles grew up as a low-born in a run-down community, and for some time, lived with their single mother. For their entire childhood, they found solace in books, and that carried on as they aged, spurring on their inquisitive mind and love for adventure. What had started as a mission to look into the mysteries of their neighborhood eventually grew into wanting to solve mysteries far greater than themselves, and they eventually got so good at it that people started coming to them for help. They made enough money through their passion to move up in the world, and now own a modest house in Squall Marina, overlooking the ocean.
They met their eventual partner, Rey Piper, through one of their jobs, but they bickered often at first. Nevertheless, Niles quickly found themself enamored with Rey's insightful personality and way with words, and once the irritation between them was dropped, the two of them clicked together and haven't left each other's side since. Niles often talks over their problems with Rey, who is always there to work things out; however, although Rey is asking for Niles to retire or step back from the dangers their job offers, Niles's desire for truth and change keeps them from settling down.

- While they're dramatic and showy, they also treat each job with the appropriate level of gravity and are serious about protecting the lives of everyone involved.
- They chose the name "Black Swan" to represent their work persona because the bird was once thought to not exist, but it did; it represents being able to achieve the impossible and discovering things once thought to be undiscoverable.
- Their memory can get a bit jumbled at times, so they write down notes constantly; this only applies to their daily life, however. They can keep track of mysteries and jobs with frightening accuracy.
- Niles wears clothes across the entire gender spectrum; they prefer fancier clothes, though, and even their comfort clothes tend to be dressy.
