Profile

Personality:

Calm and calculated, Caliber likes to consider her options before jumping into a situation, to the point that she sometimes is over-prepared. While she doesn't enjoy prolonged social interactions with most adults, she has a fondness for kids and their desire to learn -- something that, when she learns about teaching as an occupation, begins researching the topic in earnest. All and all, she wants to learn as much as possible, and from there, teach others what she's learned.

Background:

Like most slimes, Caliber came into being not long after Lety, and, much like Lety, wished to learn more about the world around her. Unlike Lety, however, Caliber took a much more subtle approach, examining humans from afar and eventually taking on their form.

After the events of Chasms, and the start of Labyrinths, Caliber still does her best to keep the truth of her form hidden from others. However, as more suspicious events start to rise, she decides that it's only right for her to investigate it, as she's got the power to fight off anything that she feels threatened by. In fact, she even goes out of her way to finally come in contact with another human...and, well, to say that her adventure from there on doesn't get more wild from there is an understatement. As she plays a certain online game with her friend, Jane, Caliber soon comes to find herself in an irl recreation of the game itself - though, unlike the ONLINE version of DRcade, this game's deaths actually stick. With only a choice few others that she knows, Caliber can only hope that the connections she has made prior to the game keep her safe...

Well, until she meets Cordelia, of course. Though the two at first seem to be on good terms, Cordelia notices Caliber's potential - and a girl like her can't afford to waste it, right? So on the evening of the second day, on what was supposed to be a meeting to strategize? Cordelia removes Caliber from the equation. She murders her brutally, makes a show of it, and makes it all too clear that anyone else with potential like hers will meet the same fate.

And that fate, you ask?

Faking a murder, of course. In truth, Caliber is very much alive - and very much not human. She uses this to her advantage in order to escape the game undetected, using the current to bring her elsewhere in the Labyrinths. In turn, she gave Cordelia the watch she had been carrying to keep herself safe - after all, if they were to fake this murder successfully, she was sure that Cordelia would get several targets on her back.

Thanks to this feat, Caliber manages to find explorers in the Labyrinths, and successfully returns to the surface. There, she is able to recruit others to her cause, and assists in rallying the party back into the labyrinths to save everyone once and for all.

Ability:

As Caliber is a slime, she is able to assume human or slime form when desired. However, the feat is taxing and thus, Caliber instead only changes parts of her body from human-like to slime to maximize speed and efficiency. Because of this, Caliber has several 'ports' where she lets her otherwise human form be lax about. These include the palms of her hands, the soles of her feet, her mouth, and two openings on the sides of her body -- the latter in which she often puts her hands into not unlike pockets, and can be easily done discreetly thanks to her jacket. These 'ports', due to their flexibility, allow Caliber to easily insert and remove items at will, often without using her hands to pull it out, but her body itself. As such, she can shoot projectiles -- often knives, her signature weapon -- at high speed.

As her body is finite, she can only put so much into these ports before it weighs her body down. As such, she usually keeps to having a few objects, such as, but not limited to:

  • a book to read
  • anywhere between 2 and 10 knifes (2-4 tucked into her arms, 2 in her legs, 1-3 by the sides of her body)
  • a calculator
  • a notepad w/pencil
As the slime is of her own control, she's able to control what sticks to her body and what doesn't. As such, any non-food usually isn't covered in slime when she pulls (or shoots) it out of her body.

Additionally, Caliber is a slime with a core - a round, stone-like 'organ' that is responsible in recovering lost body parts. Her core is what has allowed her to evolve to have human-comparable thought process and emotions, but at the cost that any piece of her that is separated from her core is unable to move independently. Instead, the pieces that are removed from her body are better used to mimic objects and confuse others in the process - this is why Caliber was able to 'remove' what appeared to be her head and have it be believable to the untrained eye, and fool Yonah into believing fish were in the lake through a combination of splitting and shooting a number of small, vaguely fish-shaped pieces of herself.

The cells that are changed to appear like the object of her choosing can even adapt their dna to match, though in order to do that the first time, she needs samples of that object for her core to reference and memorize.

Other Info:

  • She reads often, and loves to solve math problems in her free time.
  • To assist Jane, Caliber has worked hard to make tech that can help Jane chart the Chasms. This has the unintended effect of having her backpack be showcased in an investor session, and through that gaining funding to continue her research on making a backpack that can keep its contents safe at all costs.
  • Because Jane wants to chart the Labyrinths, Caliber focuses a lot about understanding what can and can't grow down there. This eventually leads her to venturing outside of Mazehart, and meeting with Fido, who has a like-minded interest in Botany. The two sometimes compare species of plants in order to understand why they may or may not be able to grow in certain places.
  • Her goal is to become a teacher of some sort, hopefully with kids.
  • Cal is not street smart, and gets stressed in unfamiliar, crowded places.
