Kai Slater

Kai was born 6 years after his older brother Leon, he was born blind though and it seemed as if he didn’t inherit the same magic level as Leon had. This didn’t seem to have an effect on his life though, his family was sort of normal as can be, just with their father being distant. Kai just grew up with the love and support of his brother and mother instead and enjoyed it.

As Kai got a bit older, he was able to have some control over his magical abilities, but he still had a long road ahead of how to use it since it didn’t seem powerful currently and its potential was still unknown. This did bother Kai quite a bit since Leon was making much more progress, though their mother reassured him that everyone learns at different rates. It did give Kai a little hope, but he still wished he knew what he could do.

When he was 9, Kai and Leon were taken to their uncles home by their mother who promised to be back soon, but she didn’t keep her promise though as her and their father were missing and all that was left behind was the ruins of their home. This was quite the shock and both the brothers were at a loss of what to do now, their uncle and aunt did take them in though and took on the role of raising them with care. Because of this, Kai did seem to start finding his path in magic though because of his aunt, she was a magic user like their mother, and the two were even partners in hunts. Kai’s aunt had taken on the added role of teaching him and Leon magic because of it, and as she taught the brothers, she had taken notice of Kai and saw something his mother didn’t. She simply made a comment that Kai and her are the same and moved on.

This comment never stopped ringing in Kai’s head and he would repeatedly ask his aunt what she meant, but she never answered saying that he’ll have to wait till he gets older and until he’s more in control of his abilities. Kai was frustrated by those answers, but he desperately wanted to know what she was keeping to herself, so along with his brother, Kai studied hard to polish his abilities.

When he turned 18, his aunt finally decided it was time to unlock Kai’s full potential, and Kai was delighted to hear this news. Following his aunt to the usual training area, the woman finally explained what she meant in saying they were the same and that when she was young, she too had quite a slow growth in her magic abilities until she would learn that her potential magic was summoning a monster similar to those that they hunt. This made no sense to Kai since he’s never heard of people summoning monsters. Correcting Kai, that it's monster and not monsters, she summoned a quite large bear shaped ice monster who was quite docile and made no attempts in attacking the duo.

While Kai stood there stunned as he could feel the cold aura of the monster and had a feeling of its size, his aunt explained that this ability is a rarity and not easy to spot as it could be mistaken as a low leveled magic user who wouldn’t be able to reach the same level as masters. The reason why it appears that they have a low amount of magic usage is because the hidden abilities could be unlocked by making a pact with a monster that is lower in the hierarchy who is willing to help people like them as they share the magic to strengthen them both. This is why she waited until Kai was older and furthered his abilities as much as he could as this pact takes a lot of energy and control to keep a stable relationship with the monster.

Cutting to the chase at last, Kai’s aunt thinks about time for him to make a pact with a monster and that she was there to assist him in the process. Walking him through the steps of the process of creating a special type of magic circle used for summoning, it was already a step towards success, and the next step now was to focus hard and reach out to a monster that will respond to his calls. He would feel a strange chill that wasn’t the same he felt from his aunt’s monster, it was a strange feeling and it started to feel as if he was being surrounded by darkness which was odd since how could someone feel something as untouchable as that? He wouldn’t linger on this thought for long as a distorted voice would suddenly speak to him, already asking if Kai would make a pact with it. Kai couldn’t help but question the being and commenting how fast that was, the monster said that it sees the potential in Kai that his aunt did and that it thinks the two of them would get along just fine, so he should hurry up and complete the pact with it. Kai couldn’t help but make a remark about how impatient the monster is, but he agrees that they should get this over with. He would learn that the monster he made a pact with was simply called Shadow and as its name implies, Shadow’s abilities that are now shared with Kai is to have control shadows and could even mimic other people’s and monster’s abilities even if it’s at a weaker level.

Kai felt things go back to normal and his aunt praised him for the successful pact and that now he’s unlocked a whole new road in magic and that he can handle things for himself now in learning what he can do. Kai smiled at this and couldn’t wait to learn about his companion and abilities.

But first, he had to give his brother the scare of a lifetime~

• His old name was Kagami because I didn't know how to name OCs when I made him lol.
• Shadow can eat food surprisingly and does like food, though it has no affect on it.
• Shadow is unique in its own way as it doesn't need a summoning circle to appear, it instead became one with Kai's shadow and lingers in it, coming out when needed or when it feels like it.
• Despite not having eyes, Shadow can see, and acts as eyes for Kai, although due to being a shadow, it can't see at all in bright environments.
