Artemis

"The Old Gods are dead"

There is a ghost in the woods. Everyone knows that, adults and children alike whisper about the spectral creature in the woods. Few claim to have witnessed it by the light of the full moon.

Artemis is dead. It is a fact she has become accustomed to. After all, it has its benefits. Gone is the anger that plagued her in youth and life, replaced with an eerie sense of calm and acceptance of her circumstances. But that didn't mean she accepted the circumstances others put themselves in. Much of her personality still remains and as such Artemis cannot sit idly while others suffer. Being incorporeal has its limitations, which frustrate Artemis to no end, but she does what she can with what she has. She might be invisible and inaudible to most but with enough concentration, she can affect objects, using this ability to draw others to safety or to drop important information into their laps. Its not much, but it is all the proactive Kamishiba is able to do. Her cunning and calculating mind helps her not only find the best route to getting the living to do what she wants, but also how to obtain the most information in minimal time. Artemis has always been loyal, to her Clan and to her friends, a loyalty that extends beyond death. Despite her willingness to stalk, spy, harm, and kill - Artemis has always lived by a strong moral code, her own personal moral code that rarely lined up with anyone else's. She sees herself as a protector or guardian, the only one who is willing to do what is necessary to keep others safe.

Yet despite her outwardly rude and standoffish first impression, Artemis is a Kamishiba who has always cared deeply about her family, friends, and those suffering under others. She finds it impossible to stand back and let others be taken advantage of for the personal gain of an individual. And even when violence is the quickest and easiest solution, Artemis tries to take no pleasure from the act. Yes she may on occasion feel joy when seeing a cruel individual get what they deserve, she does not take enjoyment from every act of violence she is involved in. In life and death, her sense of humour has always caught others off guard. Many expect her to be cold and humourless, but Artemis has a rather sarcastic and sometimes cruel sense of humour. Many of her friends were on the receiving end of seemingly cruel jokes that had no bite behind them.

Present

After her 'death', Artemis has lingered on, quietly watching over Tevlen as he serves the Lopdiemis; Bastet. While Artemis' anger and hatred towards Lopdiemis had waned in her life as she healed from the massacre of her Clan, Artemis despises Bastet. With no one but Skyla able to see her, she stalks the mansion hoping to find something to get Tevlen out of his terrible deal.

When she is not stalking the mansion or trying to relay information, Artemis rather enjoys messing with Skyla. She likes the young Kamishiba quite a bit, despite what she may think, but that does not stop Skyla's reactions and attempts to cover her presence amusing to the Lux Kamishiba.

History

Artemis was a foundling, left in the forest of Dysania and forgotten about. Until the travelling Clan Thymal found her. Seeing no one around, the Clan took in the small child and raised her as their own. And she was not alone. Not long after she was taken in, the Clan found another lost child, almost the same age as Artemis. He was a Shourinokobi, something that was not uncommon in the Clan, a small, pink little pup, much smaller than Artemis. The two fledglings bonded quickly and soon were doing everything together. They were a rough and tumble pair, more on the side of Artemis who had trouble accepting orders from those she saw as 'incompetent'. Often the two found themselves biting off more than they could chew but they would work their way out of it, before limping back to the Clan who would shake their heads but still patch them up all the same. The pair were some of the most effective and efficient hunters in the Clan. It was on one of these hunts that everything changed. The hunt itself went smoothly as always, when they returned to the Clan's camp they found nothing but smouldering ashes and charred, bloody bodies. Artemis buried the bodies of those she had grown up with, of those who had raised her, of those the clan was currently raising, on her own while Tevlen stood as a protective guard. With each body she buried, her resentment grew.

On their travels, both with the Clan and on their own, Artemis heard whispers of 'The Answer'. An organisation bent on the eradication of Lopdiemis and their ilk. And in her grief, Artemis desired to join. Tevlen, loyal to a fault, went with her. It was a selfish desire to join - for revenge. Later she would feel guilty for dragging Tevlen along with her. The training was brutal and exhausting, but Artemis was stubborn, therefore so was Tevlen. Together they made it through the harrowing training of The Answer, relying on each other to watch their backs and as a shoulder to lean on. Then they were torn apart; Tevlen was sent to work under the Knight, while Artemis was to answer to the Shadow. Being allowed to room together was their only small mercy. They saw each other infrequently, moments stolen between missions and training to reminisce on their lives. But they weren't alone any more. They had befriended a young Shouri - Charlie, the child of The Answer's formidable leader. Life in The Answer was not easy - not with the pain she had to inflict on other Kamishiba - but Artemis was able to convince herself it was all for the greater good… for a while. Slowly the veneer of The Answer began to peel away. She had done nothing against Lopdiemis - all of her targets had been simply other Kamishibas.

It all came to a head for Artemis during a mission gone wrong. It started with a niggling pain in her chest, easily ignored and of minimal concern. Then it grew. Pulsing through her limbs and jaw. Each throb of pain took her by surprise and she ended up overshooting her target, accidentally killing the Kamishiba she was supposed to be interrogating. She was sent to the medic immediately - but they found nothing immediately wrong with her. Further tests were carried out once she was taken back to the castle, but still nothing was found. 'Admit you were lying' she was told 'if these symptoms persist you will be sent to the lab'. With little other choice, Artemis told her superior that she had lied and she was duly punished.

Artemis knew her illness was not imaginary. Something deep down told her that this was serious. Terminal. It weighed heavily on her mind, affecting her to the point that both Tevlen and Charlie noticed. Her two friends gently hounded her until she could stand it no longer. She expressed her desire to leave The Answer, to run away and live a normal life. Unable to tell them the whole truth, she lied, telling them the reason behind this desire was the cruel torture she was forced to carry out. They believed her. Together they formulated a plan to escape down to the minute details. Artemis was not a fool, she was aware of the budding romantic interest both Charlie and Tevlen held in her, but it was interest she could never return - Charlie was too young, and Tevlen… Tevlen was her clanmate, her brother. She pretended to be oblivious, doing her best to discourage such feelings towards her. Yet resentment still grew. Tevlen, one dark night, confessed that he felt they could not trust Charlie. She was the child of the leader, he argued, how do we know she is not delivering our plans to Quin? Artemis struggled to argue his points (after all they did not know what went on behind closed doors) and, selfishly, she agreed to leave early with him - her desire to escape outweighing her loyalty towards Charlie.

They could not have anticipated that they would be caught in the act by Charlie herself. She was distraught, betrayed, and ran away. They had little time to talk. They were barely out of the building before the guards descended upon them. Artemis supposed Tevlen felt very vindicated - in the end, Charlie did betray them, even if they betrayed her first. They ran, hounded every step of the way, from Stardust's Doom, through Shibai and to the Gloomy Forest where they hoped to find a port to take them to Aaro. Their pursuers were relentless, never letting them rest for even a second. It wasn't until they reached the twisting paths of the Gloomy Forest that they were finally able to shake them off for long enough to rest.

Tevlen would blame Charlie, but Artemis knew the truth; it was her fault, because she was selfish. The chase was exhausting her much faster than it should have - no doubt a consequence of her illness which she could feel creeping closer and closer to her heart. The end was near, she knew that much. She grew weaker and weaker, until one night while Tevlen was hunting for the two of them, she finally slipped away. Artemis knew it was coming and felt no fear. She could only hope that Tevlen would make it to Eithia safely. And that was the end.

Or at least, it should have been.

Artemis woke up, weeks later, disoriented and confused. She was under a willow tree, not the creekside camp she had… died in. She had no memory of how she got there nor how she was awake when she had felt her heart stop. By all accounts, Artemis should be dead but here she was walking around. She went looking for Tevlen - the only thing she could think to do at that moment. She found him easily, always able to track down her Clanmate. He didn't seem to hear her as she called him - it was odd but Artemis tried not to think on it too hard. She moved in front of him, calling him once more, yet he continued to just look forwards without acknowledging her, almost as if he could see right through her. Finally having enough, Artemis attempted to shove Tevlen to force his attention. But her paw slipped straight through him - like she was some kind of ghost.

It took Artemis months to accept her … situation. She quickly learnt that no one could see nor hear her - not Tevlen, not his Lopdiemis master, not even the other poor souls who wandered into the mansion. But Artemis was not the type to sit and mope. Her new form had its advantages, namely when it came to spying. It was far easier to listen and watch when your target could see straight through you. Years passed, and Bastet dragged a new Kamishiba into the mansion; a young female by the name of Skyla. Artemis settled into her routine of spying on the prickly female, when she was given a curve ball. Skyla could see her.

Skills & Abilities

Stealth

It's pretty hard to struggle with stealth when you are quite literally invisible to most. But even without this new found ability, Artemis has always been skilled at the art of remaining unseen and unheard.

Mimicry

A rather unexpected yet useful skill Artemis possesses. She mostly used it to mimic the calls of birds and other animals during hunting, she can also use it to almost perfectly mimic the voices of other Kamishibas - as long as she has been able to study their voice.

Information Gathering

Her own personal 'passion project' if you will. Artemis has always been a rather nosey Kamishiba who held onto information like bargaining chips.

Combat

Trained as a hunter as a child, then a spy by The Answer, Artemis has had more than her fair share of combat training. She developed her own style during her many scuffles in her youth - a style that mostly consists of dirty fighting and back stabbing.

Inventory

Silver and Blue Beads [Accessory]

The traditional accessory of her Clan. Artemis has kept them but not worn them since the death of her Clan.

Notebooks [Information]

Various notebooks stolen from others by Artemis or her companion Orion. One small notebook is updated by Skyla who writes down the information for Artemis.

Trivia

IMG URL
  • Artemis lost her hatred of Lopdiemis during her time at The Answer. While she does not trust them, she does not feel the same anger towards them anymore
  • Her companion, a Yutsune called Orion, is normally by her side and a good indication that the spirit is around
  • Orion joins her on her 'hunting trips' where she hunts not animals but information
  • In life Artemis was an extremely successful hunter but she never claimed to be the best hunter, hunting was not a contest to her and there was no prize nor title to claim
  • Only Kamishibas can see her, Lopdiemis Kamishibas and Shourinokobis cannot see her
  • Her visibility seems to change with the phases of the moon

Tevlen

Artemis and Tevlen grew up together, raised by the Clan. As the two foundlings of similar age, they were as close as blood siblings. They went through everything together and Artemis would do anything to keep him safe. In the end, it was Tevlen's similar desire that resulted in his indentured servitude. Artemis has few regrets, but the fact her selfishness ended like this for Tevlen, is one of her greatest regrets.

Charlie

Charlie was an uncertain, young Shouri with a lot of expectations on her shoulders when Artemis first met her. So eager to please and prove herself, Artemis couldn't help but be endeared by her, like the younger sister she never had. Artemis never shared Tevlen's doubts about Charlie's loyalty, knowing exactly where her heart lay. She never should have left the Shouri behind.

Skyla

The newest addition to the mansion and the source of a new spark of life in Tevlen, Skyla is an odd one to say the least. The first one to ever see and interact with Artemis since her death, Skyla threw her for a loop. Gruff, rough, and a woman of action, Skyla reminds her of her younger self.
