About

Miles is an OC made for The Magnus Archives, and as such his profile both consistently refers to it and includes spoilers. Triggers include: references to claustrophobia, disassociation/derealization, toxic relationships, child abuse, implied suicide.

While sometimes front and center in AUs, in my main personal fanon for TMA, he is deceased and a flashback/posthumous character. As such, all of his information here will be in reference to the past, and few mentions of what-ifs where he is alive will be present.

As a final beforehand disclaimer, please note both he and my sona JoJo are not meant to be good people. Their relationship is not meant to be seen as healthy nor inspiring. They may love each other very much and I place them together visually and thematically often, but like... it's not because they're wholesome.

Basics

  • MBTI No.
  • Alignment True Neutral
  • Brain Dominance No.
  • Emotion Melancholy
  • Outlook Fatalistic; the only end is the one they meet at the hands of the One Below.
  • Belief Even if it hurts, the song of the Sunken Sky must be answered.
"You're so strange, you know... caring about someone like me."

Personality

To know Miles at his core, it is important to understand his very self is built on a contradiction: that being he both craves solitude and at the same time, rejects it with his entire being. He has spent his entire life in his own enclosed world, and no one except JoJo ever managed to get past those walls. With them, Miles desperately wishes to spend time with them, to listen to them, to be as close as possible-all while never truly opening up, nor sharing his life. His need for privacy goes beyond mere boundaries and into a rather self-centered desire to always take, but never give. Despite Miles being completely and utterly emotional dependent on JoJo as his one human contact, he will take his vulnerabilities and inner thoughts to the grave.

A part of him is drawn to the contradiction of himself and his partner. Though they were not yet an avatar at the time, Miles knew in his bones that they were of the sky, the Vast, and stood antithetical to everything he is, yet still he couldn't tear himself away. This lead him to believe that the Vast and the Buried, rather than being repelling opposites, may in fact be two halves of a whole attempting to join together. He identified with this notion, and often mixed the entities and the humans together in his mind, especially near the end of his life. Despite wanting to bring about the world of the Sunken Sky, he still dreaded it for the sole reason that JoJo would not be able to exist in such a world.

Despite his mutual unhealthy fixation with JoJo, Miles is quite cold towards all other people. He has no use for them, nor any need to let them into his life. Humanity in general is an annoyance and an obstacle to Miles, an unwanted yet inescapable intrusion into his tiny world. Outside of what will happen to JoJo, there is no remorse or second thoughts in his head towards his attempts to fulfill the Buried's wishes. For him, living within Its world will be the ultimate fulfillment and happiness; therefore, how it may affect anyone else is meaningless.

Quite honestly, Miles simply has little regard for or interest in the world at large. His entire demeanor comes off as either apathetic or melancholic. It is certainly a form of depression, this lack of energy and unwillingness to engage with society. He's been withdrawn as long as he can remember. Whether it was caused by his chosen entity, or simply what drew It in, Miles has no idea. It doesn't really matter to him, anyway. He sees-rather, saw-only one path ahead of him. The world will become that of the Buried, and after that, this life will cease to matter. Thinking that, why should Miles care for himself as a person, or for anyone? The exception always being his partner-eternally able to get under his skin in a way he can't shake off.

Appearance

Miles is a tall, somewhat heavier man with long, curly dark brown hair and brown eyes. He is often seen in bulky clothing, large jumpers and the like making his frame seem larger than it really is; he cares little for the state of his clothing, whether that's aesthetic or simple cleanliness. Sometimes, you may catch him with dirt and mud in his hair or under his fingernails, perhaps even blood on his fingertips where the skin has reddened and cracked. Though less common, occasionally this earth is found on his clothes, neck, and face as well.

His expression is almost always that of complete disinterest, with tired eyes to match. His poor posture only adds to the depressing energy Miles gives off, along with concealing his true height. He is, summarized, a man who seems to have given up not only on life but himself as well.

Backstory

Miles Landon was, as every bully in school so liked to remind him, born in the United Kingdom. It was here that he first encountered the Buried, or at least, as much of It as his childlike mind could comprehend. It whispered to him, and sung songs from the underneath that the young boy attempted to physically dig up. His mother was never happy seeing him covered in mud and clutching earthworms in his small hands, but Miles could not stop. With no friends, and an aloof family that paid him little mind, there was nothing else for him to cling to except the strange yet welcoming presence in his head.

His family later emigrated to America, but this did not stop the songs. If anything, they only grew louder. It was in this country that Miles met the only other person he'd ever grown to care for. They were not yet Jonathan at the time-or rather, JoJo-but whenever he looked back on the memories, that was the only name Miles cared about. Most kids bullied him for his 'weird' demeanor or unfamiliar accent, but not JoJo. They made it through his walls, and he found he could not possibly live without them. In their teenage years, the two even began to date, that's how close they ended up. And maybe Miles shouldn't have been afraid, but he was, for he could sense JoJo was of the sky. He knew the songs. He knew this meant they were destined to one day be separated.

It didn't stop Miles from helping them move back home to the UK with him after they graduated. He needed his partner at all costs. Having an ocean separate them couldn't happen. That was how JoJo ended up going to school in England, and why they and Miles also ended up in a flat together.

Though they were together, things were not rosy. Keeping the flat paid for while juggling uni at the same time was hell for both of them. Miles felt himself cracking under the pressure, and JoJo was handling it no better. Thank god they'd had the foresight to get legally married before JoJo ended up dropping out of uni a couple of years later; if Miles lost them because they had to go back to America, he wouldn't be able to take it. It ate at him, the thought of losing them... the inevitability of it, looming. If only such an important moment for a couple hadn't been ruined by rushed necessity and life's horrible stress. The more it dragged on, the more Miles felt himself slipping further and further each day; even the good times spent with his partner was not enough. He felt it in his bones. The calling; the song; the Buried.

It was calling him home.

The end was faster than Miles expected it to be, and less chaotic. What happened was so simple. He heard a knock on the door, and there they were: two oddly normal strangers sporting faked Cockney accents, and the most important thing of all carried between them. A coffin... no. The Coffin. Miles had never laid eyes upon it before, but still he knew. The strangers took it into his cramped living room, where mementos of his life with JoJo were strown about: pictures of them together, various knickknacks, the sketch of the night sky he'd been working on for them. JoJo's quilt piled on the corner of the sofa. The takeaway they'd just been eating minutes before, still warm.

He still began to walk into the Coffin. Miles could hear it singing, those melodies that had soothed him since childhood! He belonged here. Right down there, at the heart of creation...

And he heard JoJo shout.

He stopped.

"When will I see you again?"

The answer felt so obvious.

"When all the world is mud and soil. When the sky itself has sunken into the earth. Then, I will return to you."

And Miles Landon went home, with the whispers of the Buried beckoning him.

Present Day

Miles has, of course, never returned from the Coffin. The Sunken Sky ritual attempted in America ultimately failed, and another will likely not happen for centuries. Judging by his final words, Miles will not come back unless the world of the Buried is brought to fruition. It is almost guaranteed that he and JoJo will never meet again.
