Personality

“It felt like we had all the time in the world.
I miss you two."

[Serious / Irritable / Reliable / Starer]

A serious, hardworking and utmost reliable individual, Song Zhen treats every task with equal value and does not appreciate any sort of slacking in his presence. If one wants to slack off, it’s best to get out of his sight, or be subject to a rather intense glare and cutting words.

Song Zhen may be cold, rough and harsh at times, still, he cares deeply about those close to him. Even when he complains and grip shoulders rather painfully, he still always tries to help. Unless they’re being stupid, then they’re on their own.

No doubt intimidating in nature, his resting bitch face doesn’t help either (which he doesn’t even bother toning down). Golden eyes that seem to stare into your soul and appraise your every movement, Song Zhen is very convenient to have around when someone is making a scene. A simple annoyed look and the common low-life will usually scurry off. However, his rbf does incite...difficult customers. His difficulty in hiding his irritation and has definitely set off more than a few customers. But then his extremely annoyed stare (or is it a glare) comes out and they usually quiet back down.

Despite his seriously lacking sense of humour, Song Zhen does enjoy...some dad jokes, just some. Even then, there hadn’t really been any that made him laugh, simply made him smile/chuckle.

If one couldn’t tell, Song Zhen is pretty uptight, though not as bad when compared to his younger self. A stickler for cleanliness and order, he can’t stand when people don’t clean up after themselves, and most importantly, don’t clean up after themselves right. He often takes it upon himself to make things right, grumbling and judging the entire way.

One could say he’s also stoic, able to endure hardship without a complaint, if not for how easily he is annoyed. There are things he can look past, even if he doesn’t think it’s right. He’s willing to listen, if it’s not stupid. If it’s not stupid. If he has to tell you twice, annoyed. If you’re loud, annoyed. If you’re—annoyed.

Of course, when it concerns children, he is completely different. Patient and understanding, Song Zhen doesn’t mind answering the same question twice, five or even ten times, though, his smile may get just a tad (very) strained. A common sight at the local orphanage. Song Zhen often spends his weekends volunteering with anything they might need help with. He may not be the most fun of uncles, but Song Zhen tries his best.

Background

Song Zhen had been a mercenary for many years until deaths in his family changed the course of his life. He eventually opened up a tea-shop which is what he currently busies himself with. Trying new teas, developing small menus and making sure his remaining family is doing well. Life is slowly becoming life again. And that, he can work with.

“Where there is up, there is down. Where there is left, there is right.
Song Zhen, my child. Everything will be alright.
It may take a while.
But, you’ll get there.
I know you will.”

Song Zhen had been raised in a small pocket dimension. Part of the En universe, yet still slightly disconnected, a tiny dimension that had been secretly linked during En’s slumber after cultivating its core. As En’s energy had not created them, their family’s ability—though limited—were able to bypass Creator laws regarding reach across different universes.

He knew their world bypassed the natural order of the universes, but he hadn’t known it would cause their world to be wiped out. And he hadn’t known his family had known. How naive of him, to be so happy when his great-grandmother had begun teaching him little tricks here and there. That soon dove into survival, combat, the magic of the En universe, but none to do with their innate abilities. Song Zhen remembered asking her then, and he vividly remembered her smile, soft, yet full of sorrow. A sorrow that spoke of an aged acceptance that Song Zhen could not comprehend as she brushed his cheek.

“Sometimes, there will be change. And we—you. Must change with it. Survival is the most important because when you survive, that’s when you can start living.”

Song Zhen hadn’t understood that answer, because it hadn’t been an answer to him at the time. Even when he had been forced to leave, he still didn’t understand—couldn’t understand their last exchange.

“Here, we once lived. Now, we are simply surviving.”

Looking back, he finally understood.

Their existence had been an anomaly. One that had existed for so long, but would inevitably be corrected, because they were not supposed to be.

“But you, Song Zhen. You are different. I can see it. The path the universe—you lead yourself on. You no longer belong here. Because to live, you cannot belong here.”

Without knowledge of his own power, everything would end with him. It didn’t matter if his abilities sporadically activated or not, he had no knowledge and therefore, no power. He could not diverge.

“I’m sorry we won’t be by your side anymore, but we’ll always be here, within your heart.”

The origin of his existence would hide his soul, until he simply became another quirk in the universe among countless others and ultimately, forgotten.

“You won’t be alone, Song Zhen.. I can’t tell you any more, but you’ll be okay. Trust me, my love. It’ll be okay.”

With a kiss to his forehead, the knowledge had been sealed. Unable to be uttered. Unable to be seen. Unable to be found. And he was gone.

Song Zhen wandered aimlessly. He didn’t know what to do, armed with all this…useless knowledge. They told him to live, but there was nothing to live for.

Years crawled by and Song Zhen passed his existence by honing his skills. Made money as mercenary when needed. Lost in this life he had been unwillingly thrust upon, he came upon a strange girl. Hua Ying. Full of fire and cheer. Unwelcomed. That had been his only thought, and he made sure she knew it too. And got annoyed when all it elicited from her was a patronizing pat on the arm. But as time passed, even he had to admit company was nice.

Then, Liu Wen dropped into his life. Followed by Shi Fang, Shi Yue, Lian and finally, Yena.

Somewhere along the way, Hua Ying became Ying Ying and he…he fell in love.

Was this the so-called “living” they wanted for him?

When Song Zhen gazed upon the small bundle that was Song Li Ling in Ying Ying’s arms, he thought, perhaps it was.

For a long time, life was beautiful. But it seemed things could never last for him.

Ying Ying. Shi Fang, Shi Yue. Lian.

And then, what finally pushed him over the edge.

Li Ling.

All…gone.

He had tried his best, tried to stay hopeful. But Li Ling, his Xiao Ling. His precious daughter, once so full of life, withered away. Nothing had been able to save her. He couldn’t accept this. He couldn’t. Couldn’t. Could—until there was nothing left to accept anymore. She was gone.

And so was he.

Song Zhen’s world shattered and stayed shattered for a long long time.

Until a man with razor sharp teal eyes had shown up at his door and Song Zhen threw every inch of his rage, pain, guilt and anguish at him. Every blow returned with equal force, mirroring him until there was nothing left for Song Zhen to throw.

A tentative continuation. A slow mend.

Time is said to heal all wounds, and that was true. But Song Zhen would never forget. The scars were a part of him, following him into this new…living.

Starting up a tea shop with the remainder of his family’s help, Song Zhen busied himself with this beginning. A gradual return of his smile as he watched Yunfei with Yena and Liu Wen. Life would never be the same, but he still had his family. Incomplete, but still here.

"I can't...I can't. I don't want to forget her. Them. They're all..."
“You don't need to. She'll always be with you, with us. With all of us. Just like the rest of them"
“...”
“We keep them alive in us. That all we can do. I know, it hurts...I miss them. I want them back too.”
“...I'm sorry.”
“Liu---I...we missed you.”
"...Me too."

Relationships

華盈 Huá Yíng (Yíng Yíng) [ Deceased Wife ]

"The guardian of my heart," She would tease.

She was the love of his life. They met at a job and she invited herself into his company after seeing he was alone. They were a duo for a while before meeting Liu Wen. She died in the fire, choosing to save her daugher first.

宋麗玲 Sòng Lì Líng [ Deceased Daughter ]

His beloved daughter. Became sick around 4-5 years old and then died when she was 10.

劉温 Liú Wēn [ Family ]

Rescuing Liu Wen from their family, Song Zhen and Hua Ying had taken him under his wing until he recovered. It was only much later when Liu Wen would invite Song Zhen and Hua Ying to join him and 3 others. He is older than Liu Wen, but often looked to them for guidance. He values Liu Wen's opinion a lot, even if it takes a lot of clownery before Song Zhen can reach his conclusion.

夜那 Yènà [ Future Partner/Family ]

“We’ll figure it out. You got me. I’ll be with you every step of the way.” He had said with a tremble in his hand that he covered with a clench, but his eyes were strong. Unwavering as they always were.

An individual with the sharpest, most unwavering and intense pair of eyes he has ever come across. They often push Song Zhen's buttons. Clashing opinions in too many things to count, it's always a surprise when they agree on something. Song Zhen holds them dear to his heart and is forever thankful for when they pulled him out from his seemingly never ending spiral of grief.

In battle, Yena and Song Zhen work flawlessly as a unit. There were usually no issues so long things went according to plan. Before, after and outside battle was where the issues would arise. They got along like fire and water and were both stubborn in their opinions as neither liked to give an inch. One could say something about each other simply both of them the wrong way. Thankfully they understood that they were working towards the same goal and so they rarely let it affect their judgement in battle, always adapting and having each other's back regardless of what was happening. And at the end of the day, they were family.

Over the years they have mellowed out. Oh, their opinions still tend to constantly clash but they have learned to compromise or simply put it aside when there are more pressing matters to tend to (though you can be sure it’s going to be brought up later). But what's more important is that they have learned to developed a better understanding of each other. An understanding that deepened as they journeyed together.

The endless bickering began to turn into easy banter. To outsiders, their banter can still seem a bit too sharp but to them, it's just how they play. Even if there's no heat, they still love to poke at each other. Though, sometimes their snark makes it hard to tell if they’re actually getting along.

世玥 Shì Yuè (the best salad~) [ Missing Family ]

Quiet, yet mischievous. He, Shi Yue and Lian often winded down together after jobs, preferring less noisy settings compared to the rest of their group. Their book recommendations were always top notch and rarely recommended annoying love novels like Lian.

世鈁 Shì Fāng [ Deceased Family ]

Empathetic and rowdy. He met Shi Fang through Liu Wen and at first, found them a bit too excitable for him. but soon appreciated how they could bring the energy and morale up. Their pep talks were a lot better than Liu Wen's. Liu Wen's was just weird sometimes.

嚴禮安 Yán Lǐān [ Deceased Family ]

The most level-headed of their group. Song Zhen took a great liking to Lian from the moment they met, finding comfort in their steadiness when the rest of the group seemed to keep adding to chaos. They often were the only ones awake after a night of chaos due to having to take care of the others and thus, they ended up having many midnight talks.

劉雲飛 Liú Yúnfēi [ Family ]

His nephew. Song Zhen was seriously concerned when he leard Liu Wen had adopted some random kid and like the responsible adult he was, gradually integrated himself into Yunfei's life after he returned. He's proud of Yunfei's achievements but the not so great things Yunfei picked up from Yena and Liu Wen sometimes makes Song Zhen worry.

- All of his family had his innate ability type but each had a different variation. Some could dream walk between the universes, some could temporarily merge with their alternate souls to experience the world while others could judge how things would go through a soul’s past lives/existences. They had a saying, that though the different lives between the same souls were always similar, change was possible. Even if the change only occurred in their millionth existence, it was possible. Nothing was set in stone. Sometimes there needed only to be one tiny ripple, sometimes a few ripples, many ripples, or one giant fucking boulder—as his father used to say—for a complete change in course to occur. The art of discovering their own ways to utilize their abilities is lost to Song Zhen as there is no one left anymore. And that is for the best.
