"Does it look like I care?"

A travelling parasol-maker who enjoys butterflies more than people. Yena has an immense love for them and plans his journeys around visiting butterfly forests with a few cities/towns here and there sprinkled in between for the purpose of selling his crafts. Afterall, he prefers not eating dirt, thank you so very much.

Personality

"How about you fuck off?"

[Cynical, Provocative, Crass, Loyal, Cold]

Crass and vicious, Yena can be a rather nasty individual. Worsen by his confident demeanor, and unabashed attitude. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind and could care less if his comments are not received well. There’s not a lot of individuals that can overpower him nowadays, so he’s free to run his mouth with a razor sharp smile and mocking eyes. Don’t be mistaken, he is fully capable of putting on a sweet act. Flutter his eyelashes and parrot sweet, sweet words with the most innocent of eyes. It’s just he can’t be bothered anymore. So cold eyes and scathing words are his norm, especially for unwanted strangers.

Jaded by time and naturally prickly by nature, Yena is extremely distrustful. But once you earn his trust, his loyalty knows no bounds even if he really wants to bash you (and probably will).

There may have been a time when he had been a “nice” individual, but those days have been over for a long while now. When nearly everyone around him had been out for themselves, Yena could only adapt. Nothing really surprises him nowadays, having seen the worst in people, he expects nothing. Though this aspect of his personality has gotten better, Yena is still quite pessimistic. It’s only thanks to his family that he has slowly regained a semblance of faith in people.

Yena possesses an excellent dark sense of humour and combined with his often sarcastic tone, he can be either entertaining, unpleasant or straight offensive. But hey, he’s pretty and well, he doesn’t care. Blunt and straight to the point, feelings aren’t really a thing he considers. What’s the point of dancing around things if the point still stands and what’s the point if he doesn’t care about you.

Background

Yena is a travelling parasol-maker. While parasols and fans are his main crafts, he also makes paper kites and lanterns which are especially popular during festivals. The parasols he makes are pleasing to the eye but they’re usually more useless than useful. Odd shapes and weird bends, some of them barely block any sun. But well, they’re pretty and people do love pretty things.

Retired. Grieving. And me, lost. Wandering.
Family.
What did it matter.

He spent a long time away from home, until a then-grieving man with a pair of golden eyes was brought to his attention by Liu Wen.

Hurtful words were shouted. Split lips, black eyes and cuffed jaws were traded. And soon, only scars remained.

“We can’t fail this. We…we can’t lose more. Liu Wen…he…he’s—”
“Everything.”
“...Everything.”
“We’ll figure it out. You got me. I’ll be with you every step of the way.”

睿衍,當他們問你的名字時, 你要怎麼回答?
夜那……我叫夜那。
別讓我失望。
我不會的……媽媽。

A union between a forgotten god of a lost forest and a courtesan. And Yena was brought into the world.

Pretty and oh, so clever with his silvertongue, Yena was popular among his mother’s fellow courtesans and always a delight to keep company with for clients. He picked up things fast and amused clients with his little tricks and seemingly innocent comments. It seemed he was liked whenever he went, except by his own mother.

Sometimes mother would give me a look.
One that wasn’t disdain or disappointment.
One that wasn’t thinly veiled disgust
But it was cold.
Always cold.

As Yena grew older, an ability of his soon manifested. A natural green thumb turned into the ability to grow anything he could lay his hands on. This caught the eye of a man. One who had heard of the old legends.

So, Yena was sold.

There was something strange about the man’s home. As if it existed on its own plane of existence. Yena couldn’t put his finger on it but the earth called to him. He was then thrust into a glass house and Yena was put to sleep, his body used to nourish and incubate the rare plants. He was asleep, but he wasn’t at the same time. It was as if his consciousness had merged with the surrounding life itself.

For a while, Yena lost himself. Dragged along with the natural goal of life. Survival. He nudged the seedlings to sprout, breathed life into those struggling and used death to nourish the others. An endless cycle that caused Yena’s reach to sink deeper and deeper into the land. Until a small forgotten spark was felt. Crystal horns formed on his head and his body began to shed its flesh until only a smooth crystal figurine of a human remained.

It was…interesting to say the least. Yena had stayed, interested in learning about himself until one day, he decided it was time to go.

As bloodied footprints tracked through the grass, he wondered.

Had this been the reason for his mother’s coldness?

Strict and unforgiving, he was told his mother had a hard time expressing her love for him. That she acted that way so he’d grow up strong. That everything she did to him was for his own good. But why did it always have to hurt?

He knew the truth and they knew it too. But it was okay. The love the others provided to him was enough. At least he had thought so, even when he saw his mother for the first time in a long while, still refusing him. Lips snarled in disgust as the ground flooded red beneath her.

The flesh of his hand became a cool crystal as it made contact with his mother’s throat. An assessing gaze as his hand curled around ever so slightly. His hat flared above him, and a gentle descent of glowing ribbons curled around his mother. A devastatingly beautiful smile as he healed his mother. Knew they would take care of her, even if she was now useless. Forever bound to bed, every single limb paralyzed but senses still fully functional.

Classified a witch, yet not exactly one. Yena had abilities unheard of. The ability to grow anything he touched. The ability to heal any sort of injury. People wondered. He didn’t use spells, didn’t use staffs, or any conduits of magic. It was as if he simply weaved magic. Yena couldn’t really weave magic, but he could weave and store life. He could breathe life back into the fading and even bring forth life within himself (this sounds like mpreg but it’s just plants 8D LMAO). There were offers and force but Yena simply laughed in their face. Sharp and brittle as he wiped the blood off with paper bills. He laughed especially loud when Viserys offered the most backhanded deal of them all.

But why not.

Yena let himself be tied down for a while. Until a handsome grey-haired man approached him with a disgustingly cheerful smile.

“Aren’t you curious? I can try, if you want.”
“There’s no point. I know who he was and his name was never real.”

However, he was intriguing. And so Yena accepted. His lips unable to help themselves from quirking up at their antics—a warm feeling spread in his chest as the group of strangers that he’d been invited into became something more than strangers.

A family.

And when he gazed upon the funny grey-haired fella. A hope for something more.

A hope that was quickly put aside when a series of unfortunate events began to befall them.

Relationships

劉温 Liú Wēn [ Family ]

The one who met Yena first. Initially, Yena regarded Liu Wen as a strange animal. He kept his guard around Liu Wen, a prickly response always ready when Liu Wen wanted to pry. Yena knew Liu Wen was always curious as he had already known too much from the beginning and later incidents. It had taken a long time for Yena to trust him. Yena considers him the glue that held them when they were crumbling. He has strong feelings for Liu Wen and respects him a great deal. He, Yena and Shi Yue were a riot together.

宋鎮 Sòng Zhèn [ Future Partner/Family ]

"He and I never really got along. Ying Ying was a much more preferable company.
But I knew he had my back, no matter how much his expression seemed to say otherwise."

An annoyingly uptight individual, Yena did not look favourably upon Song Zhen at first. And the other did not either. However, Yena knew he always knew Song Zhen had his back, even if he did not look like it. From tolerance to genuine enjoyment. The back and forth between them. The snark. Yena enjoyed what they had and he knew Song Zhen did too even if he’d never admit it.

In battle, Yena and Song Zhen work flawlessly as a unit. There were usually no issues so long things went according to plan. Before, after and outside battle was where the issues would arise. They got along like fire and water and were both stubborn in their opinions as neither liked to give an inch. Thankfully, usually, they understood that they were working towards the same goal and so they rarely let it affect their judgement in battle, always adapting and having each other's back regardless of what was happening. And at the end of the day, they were family.

Over the years they have mellowed out. Oh, their opinions still tend to constantly clash but they have learned to compromise or simply put it aside when there are more pressing matters to tend to (though you can be sure it’s going to be brought up later). But what's more important is that they have learned to developed a better understanding of each other. An understanding that deepened as they journeyed together.

The endless bickering began to turn into easy banter. To outsiders, their banter can still seem a bit too sharp but to them, it's just how they play. Even if there's no heat, they still love to poke at each other. Though, sometimes their snark makes it hard to tell if they’re actually getting along.

華盈 Huá Yíng [ Deceased Family ]

The closest to Yena back when their family had been whole. She had been the first he trusted. Bright and cheerful with a wild streak. Hua Ying had been beautiful, always burning bright until their flame went out. It had crushed Yena when she passed and caused him to isolate himself more.

世玥 Shì Yuè (for my beloved 沙拉~) [ Missing Family ]

Quiet, yet mischievous. Shi Yue and Yena got along splendidly, often scheming mischief together and dragging Liu Wen into them. His greatest regret were the last words they exchanged in Yena's attempt to dissuade them from pursuing the culprit. Yena went the wrong way about it and his temper got the best of him and scathing words were thrown..

世鈁 Shì Fāng [ Deceased Family ]

Empathetic and rowdy. Shi Fang had initally made Yena feel wary with their over-familiar nature that was not unlike Liu Wen's. But, unlike Liu Wen, they never pried until Yena chose to share. Yena considered Shi Fang and Hua Ying the main ones that helped him become more comfortable in the group.

嚴禮安 Yán Lǐān [ Deceased Family ]

The most level-headed of their group. Lian had a weird sense of humour and would occasionally cook up the most delicious of pranks. But otherwise, they were a relatively calm individual, often choosing to remain on the sidelines until Shi Yue, Liu Wen and Yena got in too deep with their mischief.

劉雲飛 Liú Yúnfēi [ Family ]

His "nephew." Yena is the one that had called him out on his shit the most. While he wasn't always present in Yunfei's life. He visited enough for their bond to be the deepest after Liu Wen's.
