Shingetsu Clan

The kamon of the Shingetsu Clan

The Shingetsu Clan was once a protector clan and one of Watatsumi Island, but after the death of Orobaxi, the Shingetsu surrended to Shogunate forces as a peace treaty and is now considered as a minor clan within the Yashiro Commission.

History

"Spoilers abound. Tread carefully, Traveler."

Roots in Enkanomiya

The Enkanomiyan name of the Shingetsu was long lost to history, but the clan's roots as protectors of Sangonomiya had existed even before Orobaxi led the people of Enkanomiya out of the depths. This clan in general descended from a Vassal, Selene. The Shingetsu of the time were not exactly Jibashiri, but were a force led by Selene and had some influence over the people due to her being a creation of the god. They were protectors against the Bathysmal Vishaps and developed a very close relationship and alleigance with the Sangonomiya Clan. Because of this connection, the Shingetsu would also be entrusted with certain religious affairs in order to help the Sangonomiya balance out the distribution of their duties.

Selene

The first figurehead of the Shingetsu was a Vassal named Selene, and in Narukami language, Seiren. She was described to be a towering and fierce warrior that possessed great intellect and a penchant for tinkering. As she was a direct creation of Orobaxi, she was, as most firsthand Vassals, more reptilian than human. She fought against the Bathysmal Vishaps, and eventually settled with humans to create a bloodline of warriors to help protect the people for as long as possible.

Selene was also an inventor, learning from the research of Aberaku in the shadows behind the backs of the Sunchildren and the other Enkanomiyan nobles. With the notes and research, she created weapons that would effectively help drive back the Bathysmal Vishaps. There was a catch with this; however, Selene would not create more of these weapons outside of personal use due to the source of the research put into these weapons. However; because she was a Vassal, even if she was declared a traitor to the Sunchildren, she could not be touched by the people in fear of angering Orobaxi.

Selene's Light

Selene's Light is what her weapon of choice was called. It was a spear that took the shape of Narukami religious scepters in antiquity, combined with the technology of Enkanomiya to create light. It also had a chime that would frighten the Bathysmal Vishaps, and Selene's Light was produced for the use of Selene's family, personal forces and select Jibashiri who would drive away the Bathysmal Vishaps as the great exodus to the surface was underway.

Selene's Light got it's name from the people of Enkanomiya, and not Selene herself. It was given the name because of the light it produced from its eye when it "resonated" with the user. Despite the technology in Enkanomiya, it is unknown how the weapon could resonate with its user. It is assumed that this was Selene's own divine power, as she was a creation of the god herself.

There is but one remaining (and functional) to this day, and it is in the possession of Shingetsu Kesshō, the current supposed clan head. There exists another in the form of a sword hidden within the Sangonomiya Shrine. It is well preserved and not used as a weapon. Instead, it is used for ritual purposes used in moon related rituals usually overseen by the Shingetsu Clan. It is unknown if it will regain its power and functionality in the hands of the current generation.

Today in Enkanomiya, there are blueprints found amongst the ruins of Serpent's Heart that showed the technology and process of creating Selene's Light. However, it is unknown whether or not the facilities and technologies for creating Selene's Light still work in Enkanomiya.

Antiquity in Watatsumi

The name Shingetsu was derived from Selene's association with the moon. When Selene came to the surface with her people, it was said she basked in the soft moonlight and "felt its pull on the waves." To which she invited the Divine Priestess of the time to experience for herself. With their connection to the depths, this was an important event in the history of the Shingetsu Clan.

Lady Sangonomiya and Selene would do rituals during the New and Full Moons in worship of Orobaxi and to ask for the mercy of nature to bring bountiful food and calm waters. These lunar rituals solidified Selene's family and bloodline to play an important role in this aspect of religion and spirituality in Watatsumi. Selene's role in helping the lunar rituals would be passed down to her successors, as she advanced in age and eventually passed. The clan head after her passing would take on her name to signify that they are a part of her bloodline.

People of Narukami would bear witness to these rituals and the glow of Selene's Light during the nights of the New Moon, seemingly swaying the tides throughout the duration of these rituals. This would be the basis of their 'Shingetsu' name, as it means 'New Moon'. The clan head was so enamored by the name, that the name Seiren was replaced with Shingetsu.

The closeness of the Shingetsu to the Sangonomiya Clan would eventually lead up to the Shingetsu returning to their role as a protector clan to the Sangonomiya and the people of Watatsumi, just as Selene was. As time passed, the Shingetsu would eventually become the leading clan with the most military power in Watatsumi, with Selene's Light as the indicator of the clan head and the foremost members of the clan.
