02 — Personality

Natsume is socially awkward and tends to avoid social interactions. They barely speak, but whenever they do it's only a sentence or two which tends to make others quite uncomfortable whenever they're having a one-on-one conversation. Their uncommunicative nature makes them not much of a person of interest, though their sudden appearance and lack of known history have sparked some questions from others. Though it seems that Natsume has particular expertise in avoiding questions.

Natsume takes their disguise very seriously and refuses to do anything that would put their cover at risk. (and is thus constantly exasperated by a certain detective). Natsume may look cold and harsh at first glance, but they are actually a sentimental person. Natsume gets easily attached to the mortals in their life, which has resulted in many heartbreaks in Natsume's immortal life. Another example is how Natsume developed a strong will to return Seirai's weather to normal because of the people on Seirai Island, specifically the Asase clan.

They can also be sharp-tongued and bluntly honest, even at times forgetting to take other people's feelings into consideration. They can get easily irritated by people who underestimate them because of their small stature. Natsume often contemplates the most humbling means to put mortals in their place. Notably, Natsume possesses a mischievous streak, especially in their younger days.

03 — History

About

SPOILER_image0-1.png

A "newly" appointed kannushi at the Grand Narukami Shrine. They claim to have no relation to the Youkai companion of the long-lost Asase clan, instead a descendant of the Asase Clan. Though nobody seemed to know where they even came from to prove otherwise. Well, except for the Guuji, of course.

Natsume's true identity is Tokapchup Korpokkur, a Hiyoribo hailing from Seirai Island, taking on a human vessel. After the release of the Thunder manifestation, they exhausted their strength in an effort to supress the storm until their body can no longer hold its shape and regressed into a smaller physical form.

Background

— Pre-Cataclysm
Tokapchup Korpokkur (Ainu: トカㇷ゚チュㇷ゚コㇿポックㇽ) manifested on Seirai Island before Kanna Kapatcir's fall around 1500 years ago. Due to Seirai Island's perpetual thunderstorms, Tokapchup Korpokkur went to hiding in Mt. Kanna for hundreds of years until they were found by the people of the Asase clan, who were seeking assistance to suppress the lingering power of Kanna Kapatcir. Tokapchup Korpokkur agreed to help and took a human form under the name of Asase Natsume, given by the Asase clan themselves. Despite this, Natsume would still be widely known as Tokapchup Korpokkur.

Natsume continues to accompany the Asase clan for many generations. They were eventually given the title Natsu-no-Kagami (夏の鏡, lit. Mirror of Summer) by the clan due to their fondness for Mirror of the Sun flower. Natsume were particularly fond of Hibiki, whom they taught weather talisman art. Natsume is always seen by Hibiki's side, as such, Natsume accompanied her to the Grand Narukami Shrine to continue her training under Kitsune Saiguu. Unlike Hibiki, Natsume finds her "out of line" humor absolutely hilarious and the two became friends quickly. Natsume was even invited to the "Hyakumonogatari Daikai" by Kitsune Saiguu, who was the organizer of the event. They also became acquainted with Yae Miko and Takamine the Mistsplitter during their time on Narukami Island.

At one point, Takamine made a simple wager with Natsume, if they succeed in making him submit to them, he'll give them ownership over Mistweaver Warbow. In response, Natsume gave Takamine a weather doll to hang on a rainy day, saying that if the following day is clear, he should wash the doll's head with sacred sake and let it be washed away in a river. Sure enough, Takamine hung the weather doll and it was sunny the following day. Natsume claims victory on the bet as they had successfully tricked Takamine into praying to the spirit of Hiyoribo, and is now the current owner of the Mistweaver Warbow.

— The Cataclysm
When the cataclysm struck, Natsume was one of the few who fought the otherwordly threat that did not perish or disappeared. Takamine accompanied the Electro Archon's campaign to the Abyss and disappeared, which devastated Hibiki. Both the Kitsune Saiguu and Natsume were there to comfort her, with Natsume forging the Promises of Thousand Suns for her to wield instead of the Thundering Pulse which Takamine left to Hibiki as a wager for his successful return. Soon after, the Kitsune Saiguu disappeared and was "consumed" by the Abyss, leaving Hibiki and Natsume to carry on the rite of purifying the corruption but to no avail.

Many years later, Takamine managed to survive and returned to Inazuma, only to be pierced and presumably killed by Hibiki's arrows upon reuniting with her. Natsume was notably disturbed upon witnessing the act, but Hibiki soon explains that she believes that this is the way of saving him.

— Post-Cataclysm
After the cataclysm, Natsume returns to Seirai Island along with Hibiki. They met Ako Domeki, which Natsume was initially distrustful of, but as he helped manage the new and smaller Asase Shrine, Natsume came to hold respect for him. However, Natsume was completely kept in the dark about Hibiki's involvement in Ako Domeki's rebellion against the Inazuma Shogunate. When Hibiki decided to unseal the great barrier containing the resentment of the "violet glede" that resulted in the catastrophe that caused the massive Electro storm over Seirai Island, Natsume exhausted their strength in an effort to suppress the storm while also search for Hibiki. In the end, Natsume failed in suppressing the Electro storm over Seirai Island, nor did they find any traces of Hibiki. After using up all of their power, their body could no longer hold its shape and regressed into a physically smaller form. Out of despair and exhaustion, they went into a deep slumber.

— Present
After 500 years, Natsume was found and awakened by Yae Miko. Miko tries to persuade them to return to the Grand Narukami Shrine, which Natsume rejected. Much to their surprise, Miko immediately gave up after one attempt and left. That incident left Natsume to reflect on themself, pondering whether or not there is a second chance. A few days after Miko's visit to Seirai Island, the newly appointed Kannushi started their service at the Grand Narukami Shrine.

The Seirai Trail

The continuation of The Narukami Trail World Quest. If the Traveler completed Seirai Stormchasers, Neko Is a Cat, and The Narukami Trail World Quest, Natsume will return to the Asase Shrine. The Traveler will accompany them on their way to Seirai Island.

Natsume is surprised upon seeing the shrine in a good shape and thanks the traveler for repairing the shrine. They feel indebted to the Traveler for clearing the storm at Seirai Island and offer to share their knowledge regarding the cataclysm and Hibiki as a thank you. After telling the Traveler all they know, Natsume asks the Traveler to not tell Neko anything, believing that it's for the best.

06 — Relationships

01.
Asase Hibiki
former best friend

Natsume's best friend, closest confidant. Natsume is very fond of her, and would often tease her about Takamine. Hibiki always thought of Natsume as her guardian figure as Natsume has been with the Asase clan for generations, but that doesn't create any barrier between them. After Hibiki unsealed the electro storm, Natsume is conflicted about what they feel about her. That moment became a very painful memory that is burned into Natsume's mind. Natsume thinks that they hate her, but it did not take long for Natsume to realize how empty their life is now that Hibiki is gone. She was the most important person in Natsume's life.

02.
Shikanoin Heizou
friend (?) ; love interest

The first time he hears about Natsume from his cousin, Kano Nana, Heizou immediately took an interest and is determined to uncover Natsume's true identity. It's quite clear to Natsume that every time Heizou drops by the shrine to 'talk' is just an interrogation session in disguise. Natsume somehow always has a way to avoid Heizou's questions. Heizou's ultimate goal is to see Natsume themself confirm that they are Tokapchup Korpokkur. Heizou even drops by the shrine just to persuade Natsume to confess, promising that he won't tell a single soul if Natsume admits it. His small 'interrogation' visits slowly turn into off-topic small talks and Natsume, who initially thought of Heizou as a menace, is slowly starting to enjoy his company.

03.
Yae Miko
close friend

Yae Miko is Natsume's old friend. She often shoos away the nosy people who would try to pry into Natsume's past. They met at the Hyakumonogatari Daikai organized by Kitsune Saiguu. They start off as a duo, the two of them would relentlessly peck at any loopholes in Urakusai's story. From then on, Kitsune Saiguu would often put them by each other and refers to them as "the sharp-tongued duo". In Miko's younger days, Natsume would often trick her with Fried Tofu, similar to how Kitsune Saiguu would mess with her. This would lead to a never-ending war of tricks and pranks, with Miko playing a prank on Natsume as revenge and Natsume tricking her with Fried Tofu, again. In the end, Natsume is always the one to apologize first.

While they are on equal ground now, Natsume can't help but see Miko as the little kitsune that used to perch on Kitsune Saiguu's shoulder 500 years ago. Because of this, Natsume is practically immune to Miko's tricks and teasings.

04.

Natsume and Neko bond over their devotion to Hibiki. The both of them enjoy Hibiki's delicious meals and sometimes Natsume would be the one to cook meals for Neko and the other cats to share.

If the Traveler completes Neko Is a Cat and The Narukami Trail World Quest, Natsume will return to the Asase Shrine. Neko is ecstatic to see them return and believes that there are hopes of Hibiki returning, too. Natsume refuses to tell Neko the truth as they believe it's for the best.

05.
Kitsune Saiguu
close friend

Alongside Hibiki, Kitsune Saiguu was one of Natsume's closest confidants. The moment they met, they immediately clicked with Natsume finding her "out-of-line" humor absolutely hilarious, much to Hibiki's annoyance. They did a lot of things together, such as mentoring Hibiki and messing around with Miko by tricking her with Fried Tofu. It's safe to say Natsume's mischievous streak most likely came from her influence. At one point, Natsume was invited to the Hyakumonogatari Daikai by Kitsune Saiguu. There, Natsume spends most of their time nitpicking at Urakusai's story along with little young Miko, a scene that brought a smile to Kitsune Saiguu's face.

Kitsune Saiguu's death deeply affected Natsume. When Natsume returns to the Asase Shrine, it's clear that Natsume is not the same person as they were before her death.
